Correct me if I'm getting my history wrong, but wasn't the Achaemenid Empire (you know, the one the legendary 300 Spartans fought against) mostly black people? And they had a huge empire that was apparently ahead of its time, and also posed a significant threat to Greece.

You're getting your history completely wrong.

It was was mostly Asian - in the continental sense - though there were probably a few sub-saraharan Africans around in there. It originated in the Zagros mountains of Iran. The battle of Thermopylae was Xerxes I. Who was Iranian. His soldiers were drawn from a few places, but the only 'black' Africans present may have been some Ethiopians. Though I should also say for clarity that when Homer chronicled it and used the term 'Ethiopian' he was likely not referring to the actual place Ethiopia. The Greeks used the term to essentially mean 'dark people not from Egypt'. So they could have also just been some arabs or browns that no Greek could be bothered to know where they came from.

EDIT: The Greeks claimed that the persians had close to six million troops. Which...is just a lie, but they certainly had a hell of a lot of soldiers. I'm sure some of them would have been black Africans.
