The Ocean's 11 remake was a legitimately very good film, and Ocean's 13 was also pretty decent. However, Ocean's 12 was a complete crap sandwich where even the actors admitted they weren't really trying. That at least puts this in the category of reboots where, even if it sucks, there's a film in the original series (ignoring the 1960s original, which I haven't seen) which'll likely still be worse.

One way to revive a stale concept for a movie is to simply swap genders and pretend that makes the concept any less stale.

But I guess that's what empowerment really is about, giving women some table scraps and pretend that#s somehow positive.

That being said, if the movie turns out entertaining I fail to see a problem. I don't care about these movies, seeing how I never watched one, anyway.
 
Unlike Ghostbusters, it at least looks like it will have actually decent actresses. If they had half-decent writing and didn't try to insult their audience, I can see it doing okay.
 
It's also a lot harder to fuck up an action movie than a comedy.

I mean fuck even Vantage Point made nearly 4 times it's budget. And that movie was a fucking mess.
 
It is starting to feel like every third movie now is an inferior reboot/remake. Is it a matter of maintaining the film rights to these properties (as Fox and Sony do with Marvel franchises), or is Hollywood skittish toward investing in an original screenplay in what can be considered throw-away genres?

If I were a touch more insane, I'd consider that Hollywood is deliberately lowering the value of these franchises by associating them with the utter shit that comes to bear their names. I suppose they've been doing this forever, but have been doing it more often than usual in the past few years. It didn't seem like a big deal a decade ago, as the remake of the Bad News Bears didn't cause a shitstorm. Perhaps the remakes didn't carry such a blatant agenda at the time, catering to idiot demographics while counting on the overseas markets to actually turn a profit.
 
Basically, it's costs of shit load of money to make even a "low budget" Hollywood film. Because of this, studios prefer "safe" projects that are guaranteed to make a profit. The reason remakes seem to be in right now is the idea that an established brand is a safe bet since it has name recognition. If your spending $100 million on a sci-fi action film for example, better to call it Robo Cop instead of Cyborg for example. Studios still take risks with new properties or ideas, but these are usually entrusted to proven directors (for bigger budget films) or have a low enough budget that the investment is worth the risk.
 
If there is one thing women truly cannot get enough of, it is crime/heist movies. Find me one woman alive under the age of sixty who has seen The Sting. No time limit.

Oh, are men the target audience? That's a pretty fair grip of the old and the less than appealing they've got for a cast. I mean, I'm a guy and it is a crime movie, so I'll probably watch it at some point. Not for the eye candy of a bunch of women in their 50s and dumpy ass Mindy Kaling.

All that said, if they keep the budget under $50M, it'll probably make money.

Marketing heist movies to women is a pretty good idea, actually. I don't know what the draw needs to be, but I imagine it involves hunky dudes and romance stuff. That's pretty much why I watch the Thor movies.
