I’m just not going to watch this film if this is the direction Hollywood goes in, regardless of the otherwise quality of the film, and this is coming from someone who generally likes Nolan’s films.
It’s easy to ignore concerns and criticism when you get someone who has boatloads of influence in Hollywood doing something like this, generating lots of box office results and saying “look, diversity works” despite many counterexamples present. It’s clear Hollywood doesn’t give a shit.
Nolan has the “do whatever the fuck you want” card in Hollywood and instead of using it to create new IPs and changing the landscape of entertainment, he just ends up falling into the same pitfalls as the general Hollywood industry when it comes to diversity and originality sooner or later. He could have made an epic space opera or epic full of black people and/or troons and at this point, it would rack in a ton of money because his name is attached to it. He could have done any other epic. But he doesn’t. Even someone like him decides to take a story already known, adds diversity and butchers culture in it, and can make his production budget back and people will say “here’s your diversity” when really nothing of substance came up from it. And it seems to just be tokenization by the way it’s being talked about here. That’s partly why I’m trying to write my own stories; it’s taking a while due to other commitments I have, but it’s holding steady.
But I can’t support stuff like this, regardless of whether it breaks even or not or whatever. We wouldn’t be talking about this if these were original characters. It’s already bad that we keep remaking the same stories. I’m just tired, boss.
And this film ranking higher than something like The Dark Knight or Memento on Rotten Tomatoes is bullshit.
