Nolan's The Odyssey - Potentially could be epic or an epic flop.

I've seen the movie and I am confident in saying that this is the worst onscreen adaption of the Odyssey. Ever. I am not kidding.

1) Odysseus is a moron in this movie, period. None of his clever planning or quick thinking is on display here in fact the movie repeatedly shows him doing astoundingly moronic things. One example I've listed previously is with the Cyclops where the guy needlessly gets several of his men killed (also Odysseus doesn't trick the Cyclops, in fact it's essentially a mute monster for the most part). Another is with Circe (who is now a haggard old woman who exists as a feminist screed on how men are horrible instead of a beautiful seductress who tricks Odysseus' men) where instead of Odysseus outwitting her and causing Circe to fall in love with his Chadliness, he gives her a dagger and very nicely asks her to pretty please remove the curse from his men as she is holding it to his throat.

2) The gods have been completely removed which means that about half of the crucial story beats are missing. The closest we get is Odysseus hallucinating some random Trojan girl played by Zendaya that got killed in front of him as the goddess Athena which I think was supposed to be showing his PTSD from the war. Speaking of which there's an entire sequence of Troy getting sacked during one of Odysseus' flashbacks which I think was supposed to be horrifying but is instead utterly sterile. The destruction of Troy in the 2004 movie (especially the director's cut) was far more disturbing and emotional.

3) The Phaeacians have been cut out and instead Odysseus is telling his story in flashbacks to Calypso.

4) A whole bunch of melodramatic filler material surrounding Telemachus, Penelope and the suitors has been added that could've been spent on, y'know, the main fucking protagonist. Also plenty of "men bad" hand-wringing especially with Circe and Helen of the Congo.

5) Diversity out the ass. Indians, Asians and blacks as your true-blue, authentic ancient Greeks, yes saar.

6) In addition to the main characters acting retarded, there's also a lot of random stupidity scattered throughout such as during one of the Trojan War flashbacks where a random Trojan soldier is stabbing the wooden horse to presumably check for people inside, managing to stab and draw blood from one of the Greek soldiers inside the horse, pull out the bloodied sword, EXAMINE IT and then proceed to act as though everything is normal instead of wondering why there's blood on his sword from stabbing an inanimate wooden horse. There is also the entire gate opening sequence where the Trojans are alerted to the Greek saboteurs trying to open the gates and instead of bringing down the whole might of the army down to stop them, they send a small skirmish group. Also the Greek soldiers were apparently standing right outside the walls the entire time and the sentries couldn't see them...somehow.

7) The sound mixing is still horrible and mind you I was watching this in an IMAX theater. Don't believe the excuses, Nolan's audio isn't shit because he's adjusting it for IMAX, it's just shit period.

8) Sinon is in the movie taking the role of Achilles, played very poorly by Ellen Page pretending to be a man despite still very obviously sounding like a woman trying to do a masculine voice. He also takes on the role served by several other characters during this section in the poem such as Odysseus' mother in terms of giving exposition.

9) Christopher Nolan has one single character archetype that he uses for everyone which is that of the mopey navel-gazer with a troublesome history and Odysseus is no exception. I actually think that Matt Damon could've played a decent Odysseus if given the chance but the material he has to work with doesn't permit it. Same goes for all the other characters who are written with the same depressed, dour mood to the extent where they all start blurring together, male or female.

10) WHERE IS THE FUCKING COLOR? THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE MEDITERRANEAN FFS.

11) The setpieces are utterly unimpressive. Charybdis is literally just a tiny-ass whirlpool in the middle of a calm ocean probably because Nolan assumed that Charybdis was an actual whirlpool and not a giant sea monster whose actions were causing massive whirlpools to be formed. Similarly Scylla is a tentacle monster that grabs a handful of Odysseus' men...and then just leaves the rest alone even though his ship is still in range. Again I don't think that Nolan seems to understand that Scylla only managed to nab 6 of Odysseus' guys before the rest escaped out of its reach not that it nabbed 6 guys and then let the rest go.

12) The dialogue. Oh God the dialogue. Pretentious and yet simultaneously unsophisticated and not worthy of a classic of Greek literature. Also Lupita is so fucking ugly, holy shit. Like goddamn, couldn't they get a cute black chick with big bazongas like Jessica Lucas if they absolutely had to cast a negress? Why get one with the body of a man?

TL;DR: I'd wait for the XXX parody. It'll actually have hot women in it AND probably be more faithful to the source material.

Not really trying to wade into this debate, but that's really not the same thing. This is like that weird fact that Cleopatra is closer to the iPhone than the pyramids. The time difference between Homer and a medieval knight is over 2000 years. I'd have to watch this guy's video but those European knights' codes would have a strong Christian ethic to them that would have been completely foreign to Homer's heroes.

I have finished watching 4chan leaked version. 3/10 . Pretty bad and not even bad in funny way.
Why not 2 or 1?
Well there were few moments when it was almost ok for bit, but then you see Indian saaar, Odysseus calling pooner bravest man he ever knew. Or Agamemnón being stabbed to death by feral Negress. And you can take anything happening on screen seriously.
Also lol lmao even.
It is fucking hilarious Odysseus in movie started appocalypse with Trojan horse. :story:

Jesus christ all the clips of this movie look like shit. Reading the reviews and seeing them don't at all match. Its like the fucking twilight zone, real Mandela Effect shit in real time
It tends to happen when you have a bunch of lefty shills who are paid out the ass and glaringly biased by their own flawed politics to say a pile of shit is actually perfect.

Comic book fans have been watching Marvel and DC rape their favorite characters for the better part of 30 years now.

If there's a group that can recognize subversion and demoralization when they see it, it's them.
Nolan is to blame in part for this. His Batman was highly praised, but it was too dark even for the dark knight. Gritty realistic too. I suppose it's a reaction to the hyper colorful Batman and Robin, which was too similar to the 60s version. This caused the pendulum to move to the hyperactive archetype.

Also Odysseus is weirdly stupid and overly emotional in this film.
People blame Whedon for this, but it's actually Gunn who's popularized this archetype later. "Weirdly stupid and overly emotional" is pretty much all of his characters, even those that are not supposed to be. The opposite of Nolan's characters.

Did this retard read the odyssey at all
He read the version translated by a retard who very likely think "war is bad".

Hercules is a cartoon that didn't pretend to be a serious movie in the way that The Odyssey is. Nobody's watching it expecting it to be an accurate retelling of the Greek tale or to not have any eccentricities in it (which is especially common in animated movies and TV shows). It's not a massive problem if you throw in a gospel girl group or have Hades talk like a lawyer. For the same reasons, most people aren't going to care about the fact that Mushu feeds Mulan porridge with bacon and eggs in the Disney movie, but it would look significantly more retarded if someone did that in a serious historical live-action drama about ancient China.

This is like saying that you can't criticize that Anne Boleyn TV show where a black woman played the main character because Monty Python and the Holy Grail exists, and that movie is even more historically inaccurate than Anne Boleyn. They belong to two completely different genres and shouldn't be judged by the same yardstick.

Hercules is also actually good, unlike The Odyssey.
I feel like eggs over porridge and a slice of pork belly would not be out of place as a Chinese meal. They had chickens and pigs, and it’s a pretty simple concept. Although a measly soldier would probably not have access to this kind food on a regular basis.

Ellen Page doesn’t even pass as the young twink soldier that the movie is trying to pass Sinon off as. Her voice is still distinctly that of a woman trying to imitate a manlier one.

Also Odysseus is weirdly stupid and overly emotional in this film. I can’t even blame Matt Damon for this because he IS capable of playing a quick-witted rogue archetype but the movie is intent on ramming Odysseus into the same generic melancholy sadboi mould that all of Nolan’s male protagonists fall into.

Also fucking hell is Lupita even uglier in the actual film. Out of all the black women to cast they had to pick the most mannish looking one. And in case you think I’m exaggerating there’s a scene where she is briefly half-naked exposing her torso and she literally has the body of a man.

I’m starting to think that one schizo YouTuber whose name escapes me now who claimed that all Hollywood actresses were secretly MtF trannies may have been onto something.

Do they do the Odysseus being a dumb white guy with wise black Athena berating him routine? That would be funny.

The Feminists have started noticing that he's made the female characters worse:

Anyway, will women see their experiences represented with anything like the depth, accuracy or interest of their male counterparts? Because even the most enthusiastic write-ups – and definitely those assessments by classicists – seem to agree that women (not, historically, Nolan’s strong point) get a bit of a rough deal in the movie.

A few examples. Zendaya’s Athena – one of the really top gods – has almost nothing to do here but vaguely shadow Odysseus, Scottish Widows-style in a headscarf, softly nodding, sometimes doing a sad head-shake, like the teacher who tells you they’re not angry, just disappointed.

Charlize Theron’s Calypso likewise only really functions as a sounding board, ambling after him in the sand with drinks and lotus flowers. The flowers, it’s suggested, are secretly to stop Odysseus remembering who he is. The movie makes no mention of her keeping him as a sex slave for eight years. Homer’s Calypso is a great part. Nolan’s is some woman who runs a beach bar and is thinking of pivoting to psychotherapy.

These changes consistently make the women either more boring or more bonkers. The scenes with Samantha Morton’s Circe start promisingly, as she cooks a feast for Odysseus’s men in her Landmark Trust-ish cottage (good spoons, no telly) before vengefully turning them all into pigs. Odysseus comes by, twigs what she’s done and persuades her to reverse the spell not by – as in the poem – a year of sex and complex rhetoric, but just a quick word, conceding that men can be awful, but these ones aren’t too bad, as it goes.

Such alterations aren’t about the women, of course. They’re about Matt Damon’s hero, changed from tricksy shagger to gentle feminist – as well as super-cool warrior dude (an added scene involving him walloping some goons disguised as priests is really outrageous).

She is not even Athena, she is literally just a projection of his inner guilt in the movie that for some reason he believes to be Athena. Despite her looking exactly like the Trojan girl that he saw murdered in front of him earlier.

Which is annoying because just like with Page not technically playing Achilles (even though Sinon serves a similar role in this movie as Achilles did in the source material), Zendaya not technically playing Athena will be used by the woke brigade to dismiss criticism of the DEI stuff in this film. Except for Helen, they can't excuse that shit because Lupita really is playing her and not some character that is only technically her.
Does it have Argos dying or does Nolan not do it? It’s a detail in a proper adaption that is needed.
Yeah but instead of being a heartwarming moment where the dog happily greets its master and finally dies in peace, Argos is basically already dead and motionless by the time Odysseus arrives so instead you get a scene of Odysseus weeping over what is functionally a corpse so Nolan fucks even that up. You might argue that it's still the same and the little details don't matter but they do. Argos' non-reaction robs the scene of its potency.

In a similar manner they have a scene where Telemachus is getting ambushed by assassins sent by the suitors inside a temple on his way back home from which he gets saved by Odysseus as opposed to them trying to set up an ambush at sea like in the source material. It's not an overly bad change except that it serves to extend the whole Odysseus' return and pretending to be a beggar part of the story to about 40 freaking minutes with a whole bunch of stupid shit where Telemachus knows that Odysseus is back and so does Penelope, kinda, but he still hides his identity until its time to kill the suitors.

This is another one of the film's major sins, it keeps focusing on the shortest and most insignificant parts of the story and extending them while cutting out the cool stuff.

I know this type. They just want to complain and they realized that this movie ain't portraying Odysseus as hyper masculine brute so they're looking for something else else to complain, like that scene when Lisa wants to join the football team.

Argos is basically already dead and motionless by the time Odysseus arrives
They couldn't even cast a Greek living dog...

Never thought I'd see feminists complaining about a male hero being changed from a dude who convinces a witch to lift a spell by banging her brains out into a good little male feminist who politely asks her to lift it.

The sheer irony of Nolan adapting a story where hubris is such a central theme only to let his own ego get to his head this badly. The creation of this movie is a greek tragedy in and of itself.
