I don't remember well this specific part, but Achilles' heel being his only vulnerability is or could be a hint of his divinity, even when they don't actually mention it. At most, it's ambiguous because when Paris shoots him right there, he really feels it, unlike when he gets shot in the chest, when he just pulls the arrows off.

I wonder if the lack of Achilles in this version is because they just don't want a divine person part of the story, just mundane soldiers and people. The whole mention of Achilles includes talking about the chance of the existence of gods and their power.

Thing is, Troy went for the "realistic approach" because you can do what with a story as Troy: the city did exist and likely the war. The gods were just part of the myth we add as we do with old legends.

You can't do that with the Odyssey when the story includes not just the Gods but witches, monsters, and other stuff. So, we see Odysseus going to the Hades, but not the Gods? Weird.

It does, but it is a very poorly done scene. They don't even use a real dog, and whatever it is looks terrible and has these huge eyes like it's in a fucking anime.

No. It is a terrible sequence. They don't even talk to the cyclops, they just hide in the cave the entire time. The cyclops is portrayed as such a dimwit, he doesn't even question where all these little duders that keep showing up for him to eat even came from, and he doesn't even talk until after they stab his eye out. Then he goes from being totally unable to hear all the yelling and loud whispering by a bunch of multi-cultural Greekoids in the shadows, to being able to discern Odysseus was behind this because somebody whispered his name, and beseeching Poseidon to avenge him. Then they don't even lash themselves to the sheep's bellies to escape, they just tie a lump of straw to their own backs, and after they are free Odysseus shoots the big guy, causing him to flip his shit even worse and kill even more of his guys during an escape to the beach.

I just came back from the cinema having seen the movie as promised. It did have a couple glaring flaws IMO but otherwise it was solid, enjoyable etc. It's not anywhere on par with say, The Prestige, but it's better than Oppenheimer, Interstellar and other recent films by him.

To start with what I liked, I think the cinematography, score and mood were excellent. The Cyclops, Circe and Siren scenes were impressive and have a lot of charm from a filmmaking perspective. The monsters are a highlight of the movie. The same is true for the last part with Odysseus coming home as a beggar, his dog recognizing him and all that.

At its core it's a film about war PTSD even though it's handled indirectly, but Odysseus being literally chased by the dead and getting "addicted" to a flower that wipes his memories is a decent portrayal. It also preserves a Greek "spirit" by focusing on Odysseus' virtues and all of the shit about war and vices destroying their culture.

That said I felt like it was horribly miscast. Not in the way you think, the politisperging around the movie is completely irrelevant to the content. Ellen Page and the negress had maybe 5 minutes of screentime combined, though seeing the former waddle around at the start was kinda funny. Some people here claim that Sinon is the equivalent of Achilles. That's bullshit. It's a pretty big plot point that when Odysseus gets back in disguise he uses Sinon's name for himself, because Sinon is just a rando who died to most people. I think Tom Holland playing Telemachus was the bigger casting oopsie. He's a capeshit actor who's not suited for a movie like this and most of the scenes focusing on him feel bland.

Some of the social scenes were quite poorly done. The dialogue spelled out too much at times and the acting was too "generic Hollywood movie". It's noticeable with Calypso and some of the early Ithaca scenes, not as much with Odysseus and his crew. The Scylla scene felt very rushed like they were trying to cram it in but you barely got a good look at it. Otherwise the movie is pretty well done.
