Nolan's The Odyssey - Potentially could be epic or an epic flop.

Is that Theron?
Jesus Christ, she looks horrendous.
This ozempic shit is making her look like the creature from the ending of the movie REC.
Theron looks like that fake? image of Emma Watson that was making the rounds a year ago. She looked emaciated and dehydrated with stringy hair. Maybe they have the same personal trainer and personal chef.
These costumes look shockingly low-budget, like something from a direct-to-video fantasy film shot on iPhones.
The hoodie/kevlar vest is my favorite look. The Greeks were into urban tacticool streetwear.

I think you can justify almost any casting if the resulting performance is good enough. For instance, Paterson Joseph (a black actor) plays the Duke of York in a BBC adaptation of Shakespeare's Henry plays. That Joseph is an excellent actor and suited to the character is enough to justify it. I don't see what makes it so different from Alec Guinness in "Lawrence of Arabia" or Laurence Olivier playing Othello -- one shouldn't wish these performances out of existence. The problem with "The Odyssey" is that the casting of a random hodgepodge of people gathered from the four corners of the earth seems calculated to draw attention to itself, not to serve the task of creating a more dramatic or moving film. I'd be delighted to be proven wrong, but I really doubt that Lupita Nyong'o was cast as Helen just because she's the most fitting actress around for the role. And, of course, Ellen Page shouldn't be cast as any male character, aside maybe from a prematurely aged 10-year-old boy.

I also think it's easier to accept random demographic variation in the cast if the production style is more theatrical. If this film takes an intentionally flat, dark, and "realistic" style like the trailers suggest, I think that will also work against its casting choices. If you're watching something more artificial in style, something more in the fashion of a stage play, you'll be better able to accept that Anne Hathaway and Lupita Nyong'o are first cousins. That's impossible with a more grounded presentation.

love the Armand Asante series.
The cyclops in the Hallmark series is excellent.

This is the mindset for Broadway and other theater productions despite the many fluff pieces released about "Y is first Z-race to play X-character". Literally nobody cares about the ethnicity of the actor as long as the character stays the same. It's only when the established character is changed to justify matching the actor's skin color that it's a legitimate problem. Helen of Troy probably could be portrayed by a non-white actress as long as she's beautiful and doesn't change her demeanor at all, however, as that obviously wasn't the case here and based on what has been seen of her, it absolutely comes off as black-washing.

Their attempt at gaslighting the audience into swallowing this bitter pill doesn't hold water at this point because of the numerous times race-swapping as occurred throughout Hollywood within the last decade or so. It's a consistent pattern that there's no other way to see it as anything but.

It's important to remember that the Family Guy parody managed to be more historically accurate and respectful to the source material than this Nolanslop.

I wonder what the odds of all of the marble and brick being bleached white? There's a good chance it'll happen to both appeal to the normies would think ancient statues were all stark white and to appease Nolan's monochrome fetish.
