Not a single reference to Charles de Gaulle. What a fucking joke.
There are lots of things that didnt get showcased, no Tintin, no Asterix, no Charlemagne, No Marie Curie.

There were some that had very passing ones but even in Rio, I was pretty much satisfied with what they showed, japan one was kinda sad because they went full futuristic and there wasn't much older history, something that they have in spades.

You know what is worse? I've seen Carnaval schools getting a country as a theme and doing a better job. And Carnaval in Rio is something that is done YEARLY, and wasn't this opening basically a worse version of carnaval where you stay on the stands and see the cars and dancers go in front of you?

I disliked the faggotry but what I hated the most was the retarded river format: imagine some parisien fuckaroo who was watching there talking with you about it in this fictional conversation
You: oh that part of the gojira show was pretty cool
Him: I wasnt near there so I didnt see it.
You: how about the lady gaga bit?
Him: I wasn't there and it was pre recorded
You: how about the celine dion show in eiffel?
Him: I wasn't there... And even if I was, it was too far away.
You: so what did you see?
Him: some people passing by in boats
You: ah what did you think about the boats, were they decorated?
Him: no, just normal boats.
You: how about their clothes, did you see that detail in their pants?
Him: no, it was too far and it was raining and some were using raincoats so it was hard to see.

What a way to fuck the people actually going to see there.

And it gets worse: did the athletes, COI, president even saw the torch lighting the cauldron?

No, because they went into the middle of nowhere to lit a fucking balloon.

What a fucking joke.

Imagine paying top euros to experience this joke

Was this planned out before or after Covid? Maybe the original presumption was that the new normal was going to be virtualized shows forever, and then reality hit and they didn’t have time to revise.

If that’s the case, we can probably expect LA’s to be shit too.

Tintin is from belgian artist Hergé. Sacrebleu !

Why have a talented artist when you can have Aya Nakamura performing a bad lip sync and a bunch of fags dancing on the Seine to 90's eurodance track from La Bouche : Be my lover ?
Mona Lisa was from Italy and they still showed it.

They didn't care much for nacionality when using singers or songs from abroad

I watched the athens 2004 today and it had so much soul, the statue bit was amazing and it went from all greece history from the minoans paintings to greek statues to christian art and beyond.
Athens 2004 was what made me obsessively watched every Openings ever. The whole ceremony was like a dream. It was also when I fell in love with Bjork and went out to get her CDs; previously I thought she was annoying and overrated.

Tin Tin was Belgian. But Minions instead of Asterix?

I already know the answer to this because it's Current Year, but do we really need to shove drag queens into everything?
When I think of France, I think of romance, fine art, gourmet food, beautiful landscapes, designer clothes. Not hairy men in dresses making a mockery of the Christian faith (in an opening ceremony for a country known for its beautiful cathedrals) or clowns having a threesome.

France lifted most of their restrictions regarding Covid early 2022 and the artistic director for the ceremony, Thomas Jolly, was chosen the same year. (september)
They chose wrong and much too late. Less than two years to get all the logistics down wasn't nearly enough and it shows.
The decisions that lead to yesterday's opening ceremony are not going get some much needed introspection.

What saved it was the backdrop being the City of Paris.

The Art Director of Paris 2024 is gay so no wonder the 'LGBTwhatever+' got into most facets of the ceremony.
In interviews, he gives the usual speech of inclusivity and blablabla.

How could we function as a society otherwise ?
We need to see even more men in drag, we need a catwalk with the worst fashion on display.
We need bozos breakdancing to Darude - Sandstorm, we need a naked has-been painted in blue.

My favourite was L'Ultima Cena, the Last Supper of Leonardo da Vinci as a pastiche with DJ Fatty, trannies and drag queens.
Shitting on historical work of art is just what you need to win hearts and minds. Works everytime. 👍

Plus one of them was, apparently, a little kid.

This opening ceremony sucks. I just want to watch all the countries go by on their boats. Is that so much to ask?
The main reason I even watch the opening ceremony is for the parade of nations. I especially enjoy seeing those who have a small contingency of athletes will likely won't win any medals, but still have the chance to represent their country with honor and enjoy the experience of a lifetime.

I disliked how this year's parade of nations, at least on the NBC Friday night broadcast, was interrupted constantly by the awful "performances" and that masked torchbearer acting like a ninja all throughout the city.

Opening ceremony is absurdly gay, here's hoping for a terror attack
I consider myself lucky I was busy doing something else at the time the "diverse" portions of the ceremony took place and didn't see it on screen. Otherwise, I likely would have turned it off. It sucks that having athletes coming together from all portions of the world to compete together is no longer diverse enough.

I don't know if it's true, but someone told me the ceremony was done this way to appeal to young adults. That would surprise me since they probably consider Olympic athletes to be some sort of problematic combination of fat shaming or thin privilege.

This is because the Olympics itself is pushing "inclusivity".
The push has permeated all aspects. For the basketball competition, the combination of FIBA and the IOC has made a push to have more female officials working the games even if it means other veteran officials get bumped out to make room for them. I'm all for new blood, but why not keep some of those veterans to help mentor the new(er) officials and help them have a successful and enjoyable experience as well? It really sucks that inclusiveness and diversity trump everything today, Olympics included. *sigh*

Even mukbang is in the Olympics now?
With plans to add breakdancing as an Olympic sport, why not add food eating contests as well?

NGL, stuff like this makes the Olympics feel more like a joke than the ultimate in sporting competition.

So aside from the ceremony shenanigans, the coverage of the actual games today by NBC was actually kind of good. Nearly all the events during the day were shown live, with ‘highlights’ at Primetime, which is understandable because Paris is asleep during our Primetime. And the Primetime show had very little soppiness and manufactured drama compared to previous years. I would have liked to see more variety in the games beyond the usual swimming, gymnastics, beach volleyball (we don’t need to see pool matches; show something else), but I did at least get to watch Rugby which I don’t recall being broadcast on the main channel before. Apparently all events can be viewed live on Peacock, but ain’t nobody got time for that shit. I might use that during work though since I don’t have a TV in my office and I get Peacock for free. Too much emphasis on female events though (sorry women, but you suck at sports; compare the 400m relay between the sexes today).

Round 1 of women’s surfing was really interesting. Carissa Moore gets to skip the elimination round and is looking to take the gold again.

Tahiti is fucking beautiful. If I had to choose between going to Paris and watching all the other events or going to Tahiti to watch the surfing, I might have to pick Tahiti.

Eh, that was meant to be a Bacchanalia that was kinda riffing on the Last Supper. The French are very good at making everyone mad.

Here's a depiction of Dionysus, which is where the weird headgear came from.

BUT WAIT it gets weirder because this sort of halo shows up in Byzantine Christian iconography as well, and is used by atheists to prove that Jesus was ackshually a Dionysian mystery cult run wild or whatever. So maybe they were drawing a parallel intentionally.

And then it gets even weirder because they used a bunch of drag queens. Cults of Bacchus kept getting broken up and banned by the Roman Empire because they were mostly full of women who were using it as sort of an escape valve to go out and party under the moonlight. But actually we can't have that because who knows what they're talking about there? Maybe sedition. So replacing women with drag queens is kind of a slap in the face with that in mind.

Anyway there's all my spergs about this.

Does anyone have a video of the opening? This is all I can find at the moment and it's pretty shitty quality.
1000006546.mp4

The scary thing is how they managed to scrubbed the full length video of the opening ceremony from the internet.

Video is only available through torrent sites. I am not sure if we are allowed to post those links here.
