music isnt dead. its more alive than ever. what is dead is corporations making money off it.

money and art dont really mix, the further art is FROM money, the better.

we can argue what the best balance between art and money is, but the advent of the internet has given the artist more weight in the fight and the artist can decide that balance for them, for themselves

its made music bland playlist optimized slop instead of good quality music like in the physical media days just compare king crimson to any of the top 10 spotify songs and see the difference hell even pop in the 2000s atleast had lyrics
 
I agree to an extent, but depending on what sort of music floats your boat, there's always bands and artists from different times you haven't heard before. If you like certain bands from say, the 1990s, browse through things like their related artists on something like last.fm and you can usually pick up an album or two you haven't heard before. I stopped using streaming years ago purely because albums I'd like to listen to would disappear from the service, so I returned to the seven seas, and on a personal level it makes discovering and appreciating an album so much more worth it. If you really like it, get it second hand on CD if you like to flick through the liner notes and have a physical copy.

also, since YOU are making the playlist, how can it be bland? my playlist is fucking chernobyl level fire, for me, because I made it

I agree but also disagree.

Sure the mainstream side of music is arguably the worst it has ever been. There isn't anything that really sounds original. If you are talking about pop and mainstream hip hop then yeah, music is dead.

On the other hand, theres plenty of good music out there if you know where to look. I personally like rock/punk/metal more than anything else. Honestly the last few years for that type of music have been better than most of the 2010s. The generic mid 2010s metalcore / deathcore stuff got boring pretty quick, with some exceptions.

Some bands gaining traction that i'd recommend are Koyo, Bleed, Vein.FM, Fleshwater, Loathe, Sunami, Snuffed on Sight, and Peeling Flesh

Theres also some smaller slam bands I have really enjoyed lately such as .357 Homicide, Infectuous Jelqing, and BOLTCUTTER.

I also check out my regional scene and have found some gems. I always go to shows blindly when new bands are there because i like the surprise. I'd love to share but I don't wanna self dox.

And through meeting people online i got to listen to good stuff from their regional scenes that i'd never know otherwise.

Though i have problems with streaming services I can't deny that I found some real gems thanks to them. Like this one band called Liquid Sand that has maybe 50 monthly listeners and hasn't dropped an album since 2005.

I also don't like that the pay from streaming is ass but i actively support my favorite smaller artists buy buying shirts, CDs, and even stickers as well as frequently attend shows when they play.

Basically mainstream music is dead, but if you look enough you can find some genuinely good stuff.
 
I feel there's pros and cons to the decentralization of music/streaming, and like most media that gets decentralized, a pro and con is that anyone can create on a shoestring budget.

Pros: I have found some older bands, as well as bands that play in certain subgenres that I like, just by going to certain YouTube channels, or accidentally leaving autoplay on.

Cons: Streaming music has really helped commodify music. And a lot of the "intamicy" has been taken away, in a sense. Also there's the fact that, just as you can find an artist on a streaming service, it can be taken away at the very hint of being "problematic".

Reminds me of the Melvins song "Instant Larry" since it showed up on the Demon Knight soundtrack and was difficult to find on YouTube and Spotify. There are alternatives such as record stores, but you're basically paying Limited Run Games prices for overpriced plastic with fancy decorations. This is the last album I purchased before the coof shut everything down:
