Encino Man (1992)

I refuse to believe that IMDb wants me to think that this is a 5.8/10. If anything, I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that Pauly Shore’s presence made Brendan Fraser shine in the most fun way possible. Even with Sean Astin in this, these three were pretty much one of the things that I missed with comedies like these — actually having real friends in wacky scenarios trying to figure out what to do in their high school life. Plus, the premise of a caveman being thawed in ice and being brought back as a high school student was just one of the things that I sort of miss in today’s Hollywood.

You just don’t have real fun ideas and while it may look and sound corny, to me, it was just something that I can smile and calm down. Plus, if I didn’t know any better this could have been a PG-13 release if they did decide to turn things up with the humor. Overall, this is a great (and I dare say, underrated) movie to watch as a fun time.

Though, if there’s one thing that I really wish I knew, I wanted to know how Pauly Shore was able to do that weasel impression with his mouth:

Ke Huy Quan starred in a minor role as Kim, the president of the Computer Club accepting Fraser’s Link character in it. It wasn’t until last years Oscars where both Fraser and Quan were seen facing each other 30+ years later winning their respective Academy Awards for their films, Everything Everywhere All At Once and The Whale

This would be the famous meme that would end up being created as a result:

Alos any idea where I can find the complete United States Steel Hour series?

Dick van Dyke is great, Lucy and Bewitched are decent. I'd recommend Andy Griffith and Gilligan's Island. Andy Griffith is surprisingly sharp if you give it a chance. Just don't eat any of Aunt Bea's pickles.
 
there's surprisingly a window where old-but-not-old-enough shows are too hard to find. Too new and archival sites don't have them because they're not public domain, too old and torrents don't exist (and if they do there's no seeders)
I guess when I get a job I should get a usenet subscription. Finally found a torrent from Yandex for The Lucy Show that has one seeder sending the episodes by dialup.
 
If you can find them, the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour is the baseline lesson in what being subversive and brave  actually is. Yeah they were anti war faggots, but they were actually talented, and had talented acts on. Also, extremely clever, and enjoyable even if you disagreed with their stance; they actually were fought and shit on by their bosses (unlike every "subversive" show these days) and just about lost their TV careers over it.

Also also, the show had a lot of history in it, Pete Seegers return to TV after being mega-banned, Pete Townsend literally nearly getting his head exploded, and the origins of Steve Martin, Albert Brooks, (unfortunately) Rob Reiner, and a ton of others.

I decided to rewatch Gomorra - La Serie, starting from s03, that's the third time i am rewatching it now, it is that good. It's simply the best crime show i ever have watched, trumps The Wire for me, easily so. Nothing is glorified, everyone wants to fuck everyone else over, everyone is pretty much a cunt to varying degrees, with Marco D'amore (Ciro in the show) being the quintessential anti-hero. Acting and actors range from a bit hammy to top-tier, never falls to the dogshit lows of other italian shows like, for example, Suburra (terrible show, don't watch). The tone is serious and eclipses The Wire in its realism, so no Brother Mozoune or anything like that in this one.
If you want to give this a watch, for the love of God do so in its original language, not even sure if it has an english dub, it has an outrageously shitty one in my language. The show lives via its on-location shooting in Naples and the actors speaking napulitano. The soundtrack by Mokadelic is also A+++. The first four seasons are on Netflix but Sky holds the rights to the last season still.

The movie they shot to give one of the show's main characters more backstory, L'Immortale, is also very good but the show can be watched without it. It's set between the finale of s03 and the start of s04.

Yes mate, that period is a pain in the arse to find stuff. Much has no legal option either, you MIGHT get lucky and some DVD boxset from years ago floating around on ebay.

I find shit like daily motion and the video streaming piracy sites can be useful, you just have to scope around till you find some links. I download everything, so once i find it I have it. But skulking around the less popular outlets can yield results, and you sort of learn how to stay connected in with different websites to search all over the place. The hardest thing for me is just finding shows, you need to learn it exists before you search for it.
 
The only nearly-complete collection ofCharlie Chaplin I could find was in Russina, which you think wouldn't matter for a silent fim but yeah it does.
I found English versions for all the files except the first season, where the collection is a poorly labled dvd rip in vob format (the labelling is a list on the torrent page of what titles match up to which files, with names repeating for each disk). I'm in the process of converting from vob to mp4 and my computer is NOT HAPPY IN THE SLIGHTEST

and my dumbass didn't realize that the disk files didn't line up with individual movies and corrupted the whole set, and found a better download anyways.

I came here to write about Old School comedy and was immensely comforted to see your post about Chaplin. Really feels like entertainment is in its most dire era yet so now us Millennials/Zoomers are running towards nearly 100 year old comedy to delight us.

But anyway I rotted developed my childhood brain with The Three Stooges, The Marx Brothers, Abbot & Costello, and even some Chaplin and Buster Keaton silent films. But one act I missed out on totally because I don’t believe they were ever played on 90s/2000s US Television; Laurel & Hardy. And man that duo is now way up on my list of all time greats those two were fantastic. And I think coolest of all they started off in Silent Films and flawlessly transitioned to Talkies. I just watched “Block-Heads” and what a damn fine hour long comedy this is.
If you’re like me and never got the chance to watch Laurel and Hardy just play this now and have some laughs. I really love these two characters still feel unique in comedy. I would have assumed Oliver Hardy would played a big fat dumb guy but he’s actually the smarter & quick to anger straight man. Where Stan Laurel plays a more childlike buffoon. This is just really good stuff and I think I’m going to rapidly marathon all the old Laurel & Hardy material.

Waited almost 2 years to watch this project, for some reason my country got it late and for some other even online there was no way of buying it - I'm a fan of the animation style, reminds me of the movies I got to watch with my grandfather so I was hoping to give it a shot.

Most worthless piece of garbage I ever paid for, it is literally "Ukranian propaganda" the animated movie - They grabbed an interesting and potential filled plot with fun whimsical looking caracthers, beautiful scenery, good morals on preservation, and just took a 90° turn south.

The highlights have got to be:
  • A random 4 minute song to fluff the countries ego that gets repeated 3 times, one even without any main caracthers involved in it, just random extras singing it.
  • The classic tale of the town of retards going against their own people for mid art hoe pussy because she has a car and a deed to a mansion, not even the land in it's current state to threaten them, just the fucking house.
  • The wonderbread Blonde woman being the villain- I shit you not, the blonde bimbo with a deforestation fetish and a steampunk tree cutter is the antagonist of this story, all she was missing was the fucking bread.
  • The forced as shit romance and redemption "It's not what you think" plots seen since the 70s
I was expecting something tangible at least, this was a passion project that has been in the works for almost 5+ years with 2 versions made of the caracthers and comstant updates by people who you'd feel gave a shit, all to become a visual mid tier dog shit propaganda piece with shit morals, plot and caracthers.

It's like "the little vampire" all over again, and I'm reminded that God damn I hate the french so much.
 
On the topic of older media, is the old Mod Squad show any good?

I recommend the Dick Cavett show. It's an old talk show with celebrity guests where you get the feeling the discussions have actual substance. He comes across both as shy but at the same time very laid back, sometimes almost childlike in the way he asks questions, which is great for having his guests open up more. Kind of like you crossed Louis Theroux with the first ever Conan episode from the early '90es (where Conan's feeling of being overwhelmed is palpable).

The Little Vampire, or "Le petit Vampire" as it's more commonly known, is a French children's T.V. show that aired in the late 90s, it followed the adventures of an ordinary schoolboy and a small vampire child in a whimsical very interesting way, there where magical paintings that held different worlds, there was the magic of the mansion the vampire lived in itself, that along with the assisting cast create very fun episodes, and most impactful, it had incredible morals and lessons that could unironically help anyone at an early child's age regardless of the dark theme.

A good example would be things like bullying, the schoolboy got bullied by a colleague, there was an episode where he confronted the kid and got beat up, he goes into a magical painting with the vampire and learns "kung-fu", next day he goes back and confronts the bully and again gets his head caved in - But the important thing going forward in episodes from this is that, regardless of the bully being stronger, the boy starts to fight back, he never wins, but he never loses again, and slowly the bullying stops as he now knows his worth and is willing to fight back.

This show had a lot of heart, it was quirky for the time and you could feel the creator's love, fast-forward to a few years back and a surprise movie came out, the show with new art, directed by the same man - And my god, it was such a disgusting travesty.
The characters got butchered and the story feels like the man is trying to regurgitate 3 hours worth of content into your eyes in 1 hour, the worst highlights :

  • The captain, the undead skeleton poet writing lord of the ship and manor, a figure who in youth you'd look upon as a pillar of imposing strength and respect, he was the force that no matter how bad things got you know could save you - is transformed into a bumbling weak retard that feels like a chore for the mother to be around - When before there was almost Adam's family unconditional love, now there is almost an obligation to love one another.
  • The mother went from someone who looked like she could only see the good in people but could impose herself when need be as to save you from hurting yourself or if angered, to someone who just complains and complains about how bad life is and how everyone is so irresponsible and dumb compared to her, and she got oversexed to shit.
  • The sexual tension with the boat - there is a whole arc on the boat being sentient and there being an implication that the relationship ship-captain is sexual in a weird way - there is even a moment when the figure head legit eyes-closed moaned the captain's name when the small vampire child kissed her awake (it needed to be a kiss for whatever magical french reason).

The man took something that was loved by many and conformed it to modern French sensibilities, oversexed female characters, and wimpy men just because he wanted to make individuals who shouldn't be comical comical, just look at these comparison screenshots and you'll have some vague idea of what I mean:

I'll try to add some I don't think have been mentioned.

Mesrine Parts I & II - best gangster movies you've likely never seen. Vincent Cassel is playing quite a different character from that ballet movie (never saw so maybe he did play a French gangster). Its criminal (ok obvious pun) that this didn't become at least a larger hit than what it was.

Night and the City - Two bit hustler stumbles upon a phenomenal deal to make money as the walls are closing in. Its quite a bit darker than what you would normally see coming out of 50s Hollywood. Haven't watched the Deniro version but it doesn't look as good.

The Dirty Dozen - Hands down my favorite WWII film. Plot looks familiar? Hmm I wonder if Tarantino just ripped this movie off almost completely in between his feet sniffing sessions. Unfortunately for him the only two characters I can remember are the brilliantly cast German guy and pretty boy Brad Pitt with his "lets go kill them Nawwwt ZZZ's." You'll remember Maggot, Posey, Major Reisman, Franko, etc. far more than faggotwood's new era remake.

I am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang - Obvious that I like classic movies? Paul Muni is sort of a forgotten star as he was on the cusp of Hollywood offering films with sound (imagine that). A really good story from start to finish that is a bit surprising in how it ends.

Definitely. He all but admitted it and has raved about the movie repeatedly. He also borrowed a lot from a lot of other movies including a movie of the same title (but not deliberately misspelled). He's a huge movie nerd and is constantly dropping references to other movies.

(The Dirty Dozen itself was apparently a remake of a now-mostly forgotten well at least by me movie called The Filthy Fifteen.)
