So obviously Geoff making videos like this is pretty unethical, but are there possible legal issues? He regularly gets paid to make videos promoting Crunchyroll and now he's attacking one of their competitors. This is a paid shill attacking a competitor company while posing as an independent third party. Sure, he's not technically a Crunchyroll employee, but he's still bought and paid for by them, and there are numerous videos on his channel proving it.

He also bicthes about how the documentary isn't about anime, it's more about the type of anime Netflix wants on its platform, and how Netflix wants anime to be perceived.

Then he complains about the bad editing and writing in the video.

I don't think Geoff would every be mad that Netflix is trying to make anime more mainstream as I'm more than positive that Geoff wants nothing more than for anime to be mainstream. Being the progressive male feminist that he is, anime becoming mainstream probably only has positive outcomes in his head.

If anime becomes mainstream it will become more progressive and stop opposing women and troons. His audience will grow and animators might get better working conditions, maybe that means that japan might become more socialist. I can kinda see Geoffs position, being that yes this shit is a commercial, but at the same time I remember he is the kinda of guy that makes you feel stupid if you agree with him. Localization is always tied with what licensing companies want anime to mean; 4Kids sanitized it to a ridicolous degree, Harmony Gold destroyed and reporpoused what they got and Funimation can twist what they want with their new set of politics. Geoff bitching at Netflix about their interpretation of anime (which stands to try to save the company) comes as very rich being that he defended the other licensers over their changes.
I can understand getting angry at the working situation specially after KyoAni tragedy but as much as this is a reality it doesnt belong on a documentary that is basically pitching the industry to a new set of investors and a brand new audience.
Being dead honest I dont like Netflix neither I do like Geoff but I guess I had to lower myself to "defending" them for the sake of making my point.

Despite my disagreements about Geoff's motivations, I think he has a point with Netflix's documentary because it went on tangents about anime being edgy and the fact that the documentary portrayed the overworking of underpaid Japanese animators as a work of passion is a very disgusting practice.

However, if this documentary was made by Crunchyroll then I doubt Geoff would ever make that type of video in the first place and would defend it or stay silent like he did for High Guardian Spice

Playing devil's advocate here (because even a broken Geoff is right twice a day), but Netflix glossing over these issues by framing the work of these people as positive "I worked my ass off, but it was worth it" motivational speeches is definitely an unhealthy decision on their part. Especially in light of not only the poor payout to not only animation studios, but the people who direct and produce these shows being common knowlege within anime circles. And on top of all that, people have died from over-exhaustion, several studios had to declare bankrupcy or shut down as a result of a death within their walls (2018 saw the loss of two major contract houses as a result of these factors- Studio Wanpack and drop) and shows completely falling apart because the production staff are unable to get any help to save their floundering anime because other anime have such equally awful production schedules that they need those animators too.

Now of course, Geoff is an idiot in that Netflix is only advertising their own shows and nothing else (it's a Netflix doccumentary, they aren't going to suck CR's dick because you like them over the most popular streaming service next to YouTube). But just glossing over that, along with the editing that looks like a YouTube Poop gone wrong (in other words, a YouTube Poop) are certainly valid points, if nothing else.

The "article" (more like a paragraph) doesn't even bash the show. In fact, my big criticism is it says pretty much nothing about the show and doesn't even elaborate on the cast and creator. Why does it put "creator" in scare quotes? Is it actually the English language translator or director? I dunno, the article gives no details. It's far more exasperated about the praise of it on twitter which also says pretty nothing about the show and just mentions the race of the creator and cast again and again.

Which is of course NOT racist. Nothing racist about fetishizing and putting black people on a pedestal!

Edit: After watching the trailer, I'd say it looks decent. I actually like the character designs and animation, and some of the humor at the beginning. But my interest took a dive when the pimp mobile (and that's not even a black joke, what else would you call that thing?) transformed and it showed a bunch of pretty paint-by-numbers mecha fights. The action, while it isn't terrible animated, looks blandly directed and there's some conspicuous CGI.

Looks like some of Geoff's fantards invaded the comment section of that article and are calling people incels, "mayosapiens" and various other insults.

...but that's what Sankaku does for all of their "articles". They're all titled with low hanging sensationalist bullshit to get clicks. It's clickbait without the "and you wont believe what happened next".

Occam's razor: the author couldn't think of anything else that was standout, so he went with the race of the creator.

For those who also don't know, Cannon Busters is/was a kickstarted anime headed up by Lesean Thomas (black guy) that was delayed a few times until Netflix bought it up. I haven't seen much of it it, but it's got Thomas Romain (french guy) working as art director so visually it's pretty good. Guys like Geoff love to talk about projects like this because it's got gaijin working on it and that makes it easier for them to form self-insert fantasies about being close to the industry. The free W O K E points from a black director are just icing on the cake.
