while MK will always be a ground breaking for pushing limits of video game violence, establishing the ESRB, ect. i think street fighter would influence most fighting games on the snes from that point forward.

if were talking nostalgia i personally have more of a connection to SF cause i grew up playing it.
but if were talking numbers alone, street fighter has amassed over 14 billion dollars in revenue while mortal kombat is just above 12 million. this could be because of its prominent Japanese audience and the fact that mortal kombat is largely unavailable in japan.

If i were given the ultimatum between playing SF or MK for the rest of my life, I'm probably picking Street Fighter 2.

Mortal Kombat 2 -looks- as if it learned its lessons from the previous movie, so it will probably be a better film than both the prior one as well as Street Fighter.

However!

Street Fighter seems to be self-aware its entire premise as a movie is fucking retarded and is leaning very intentionally into "so bad it's good" which is a bold move by a big-ish budget film.

I suppose it will boil down to fight choreography which one will actually be worth watching more than once.

The guy that played JC (and the ninjas) in the first 2 games, Daniel Pesina, sued Midway, for royalties for using his likeness in the home versions. Some of the original cast joined in on the suit, but Pesina was the instigator so he became persona non grata. They replaced him with another actor in the Trilogy game.
