I actually blame the Great Awakening for a lot of the ways American christianity is screwed up: It became all about getting people into the tent and making a profession of faith. Now you're "saved" and anything after that is just your business because "once saved always saved". It never stopped being about getting butts into the tent, or getting "gentiles" into the tabernacle. This is the origin of our modern mega-churches which emphasize showmanship over substance, and it did little to endear the future intellectuals or elites of our country toward viewing religion as a genuine expression of faith. The implicit cynicism of those tent revivals and their MLM-tier programming, only exacerbated by the shady characters who ran them, just burned people out on genuine religion and made it much easier for them to fall into hollow shibboleth. Now that the drain has bottomed out, one can only hope the new generation is allowed to express their faith genuinely, and that jealous old men do not intentionally sabotage it out of spite.
