Law Michigan becomes 1st state to ban flavored e-cigarettes

Michigan on Wednesday became the first state in the country to ban flavored e-cigarettes, as concerns continue to grow over the potential dangers of vaping.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer made the decision after her chief medical executive found that vaping among young people "constitutes a public health emergency," according to a press release from the governor’s office.

Whitmer lambasted companies selling vaping products by “using candy flavors to hook children on nicotine and misleading claims to promote the belief that these products are safe.”

“That ends today,” she said in a statement.

Flavored nicotine vaping products -- which include tastes akin to apple juice, bubble gum and Nerds candy -- will be banned in retail stores and online in the state. Any marketing of the products that include the words “clean,” “safe,” and “healthy" have also been banned.

Whitmer also ordered the state’s Department of Transportation to enforce an existing statute to prohibit the advertising of vapor products on billboards.

“Governor Whitmer has taken bold and appropriate action in response to the epidemic of youth e-cigarette use,” Nancy Brown, CEO of the American Heart Association, said in a statement.

The ban comes after nearly 100 possible cases of severe lung illnesses associated with vaping were reported in 14 states from late June to mid August, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In Michigan, the Department of Health and Human Services was reviewing six cases involving respiratory illnesses associated with e-cigarettes and vaping.

“The severity of illness people are experiencing is alarming and we want Michiganders to be aware using e-cigarettes and vaping can be dangerous,” Sarah Lyon-Callo, the state epidemiologist, said in August.

The CDC noted that more information is needed to determine exactly what is causing the illnesses. In all of the cases across the nation, it does not appear that there is an infectious disease involved.

Vaping among high school students increased by 78% from 2017 to 2018, and rose by 48% among middle school students during that same time period, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The FDA believes the sharp increase stems from the use of USB-flash-drive-like e-cigarettes, including the JUUL product, which have become majorly popular among young people.

More than 3.6 million kids reported using e-cigarettes in 2018, according to the FDA.
tbf, e-cigs are both figurative and literal cancer anyway

What a lot of these recent articles are the omitting is that a majority of these vape-related cases don't involve commercial brands like Juul, except one or two exceptional individuals (i.e. teen white girls) who chain-vaped every day for years.

The problem really is related to cannabis oil vaping (which is a lot heavier & has a higher smoke point than pg/vg), along with the disgustin fact that the vast majority of people who vape don't clean the parts that they're sucking on.

Then there's people who actually vape while they shit; as in vooping.

It's no wonder people are ending up with all different kinds of wack pneumonias due to fuck knows what kind of oils and pathogens being atomized straight into the lungs.
>tfw vooper

Speeds up my morning routine by like 5 minutes though, and I don't even have to go outside.

I can appreciate this, but learning how to shit faster (or just smoking on the commode) works too.

As for the going outside part, well..... besides time-management, growing up as a smoker in miserable climates taught me some pretty handy social & survival skills.

And at least with fellow smokers, when the butt is finished, so is the conversation. I don't understand why vapers feel the need to continue sperging about their mods.

I'm honestly surprised it's taken this long for vapers to start developing turbo popcorn lung. Wouldn't surprise me if China was adding unfiltered water from the Yangtze or runoff from the foxconn plant into vape juice they ship over in retaliation for tariffs.

State that has city where 68% of murders and rapes go unsolved (Detroit) focuses time and money on stupid shit instead.

We don't care about Detroit.

Detroit is like that barn on the back of your lot that's old and rickety, but you don't really need that space for anything, so you just leave it alone.

We're just waiting for it to collapses completely on it's own, then we'll bulldoze it and plant some nice trees or something.

Seattle and San Francisco saw Detroit and said "hold my vape stick".

Honestly I don’t mind this. Vaping was and is a serious problem in middle and high schools in Detroit, and it’s a hell of a lot easier to get a juul or something than it is to head down to the gas station and get a pack of menthols.

"Vaping was and is a serious issue in schools in Detroit"

lmao I'd say the fact that 3/4 of the students won't graduate, the fact that students regularly shoot and rape each other in school, and sell hard drugs at school is a more serious issue than some kids blowing SICK CLOUDS YO.

Vape juice is propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin, and whatever flavoring. Much healthier than tobacco, and with how many people have gone crazy with it you'd think there would be news of someone with super vape cancer.

Thanks tobacco lobby!

Mmmm delicious propylene glycol! All natural and vegan-friendly.

Even smoking 2 packs a day probably won't give you cancer in the span of 5 years. We'll have a better understanding of the long-term effects when the people who grew up vaping will have turned 45 and still continue to vape.

Good.
This shit has got to stop. Literally 2/3 of the country I live in are vaping, kids and adults.
It's unregulated in workplaces where I live so anyone can just vape at work as long as the boss doesn't care and most don't.
There's zero long term studies on the effects of this thing but even GP's are prescribing it for stress.

Yes, there's the whole "but it's healthy" thing but did you know that cigarettes were "healthy" until the 60's? That you were allowed to smoke in hospitals and nurseries? That Lucky Strikes were also prescribed for stress?
It's poison. We just don't know what kind until millions of people are going to suffer from the same mysterious illness 20 years from now.

Conspiracy time:
Wouldn't it be special if it turned out that it was created as a form of population control and it makes you sterile?
Thanos, eat your heart out.

Fact checked that for you, and that’s not counting suburbs and private schools. Kids being stupid and violent isn’t limited to any one school just because “hurr durr nigurs hurrr.”

Here is the Detroit Free Press' article on the coming ban.

Except that the vast majority of the flavoring were never meant to be inhaled. And on the healthier than tobacco point, just don't smoke or vape. It's that easy.

Sure. It's not limited. However Detroit is a fucking shithole with a much higher than average rate of those things happening. Kids vaping is priority 60306823 on the list.

Legal weed will more than cover the small business lost from all the vape shops closing down imo.

If you want a nicotine high and don't want to smoke, just dip like a straight person. At least they can just cut part of you off if you develop mouth cancer. Added benefit of not being able to do it all the fucking time unless you want to be that guy.

I will admit those disposable blu vape pens are great for long car drives though.

You want to be a pretentious faggot showing off cloud of smoke? Just smoke cigars. That's how I do faggotry and it's a great tradition.

Get it because things you smoke are called faggots in the classic definition of the word

I have always been skeptical of vapes as a smoking replacement. Sure, they (maybe) solved the cancer problem, but they didn't solve smoker's second bad habit: being extremely addicted to nicotine. I don't know how heavy smokers focus when part of their brain is counting down the minutes until their next smoke break. Some dude I used to date got into vapes to quit smoking but instead his nicotine tolerance went through the roof and he got even more bitchy without his fix. I guess cigarettes and vaping smoking are lesser vices than alcohol but man, not by much.

Speaking as a non-smoker, as much as vaping annoys me, I vastly prefer that nicotine addicts do that than smoke regular cigarettes. Even the worst vaping flavors/scents don't smell as foul as cigarette smoke.

If the states hate missing out on cigarette tax revenue so much, why don't they tax vaping at a similar rate?

Frankly this seems mostly an affluent (or relatively) school problem. Collecting vape accessories is like a status symbol now. In the hood I'd have to think it's still more shoes and chains.
