Law Michigan becomes 1st state to ban flavored e-cigarettes

Michigan on Wednesday became the first state in the country to ban flavored e-cigarettes, as concerns continue to grow over the potential dangers of vaping.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer made the decision after her chief medical executive found that vaping among young people "constitutes a public health emergency," according to a press release from the governor’s office.

Whitmer lambasted companies selling vaping products by “using candy flavors to hook children on nicotine and misleading claims to promote the belief that these products are safe.”

“That ends today,” she said in a statement.

Flavored nicotine vaping products -- which include tastes akin to apple juice, bubble gum and Nerds candy -- will be banned in retail stores and online in the state. Any marketing of the products that include the words “clean,” “safe,” and “healthy" have also been banned.

Whitmer also ordered the state’s Department of Transportation to enforce an existing statute to prohibit the advertising of vapor products on billboards.

“Governor Whitmer has taken bold and appropriate action in response to the epidemic of youth e-cigarette use,” Nancy Brown, CEO of the American Heart Association, said in a statement.

The ban comes after nearly 100 possible cases of severe lung illnesses associated with vaping were reported in 14 states from late June to mid August, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In Michigan, the Department of Health and Human Services was reviewing six cases involving respiratory illnesses associated with e-cigarettes and vaping.

“The severity of illness people are experiencing is alarming and we want Michiganders to be aware using e-cigarettes and vaping can be dangerous,” Sarah Lyon-Callo, the state epidemiologist, said in August.

The CDC noted that more information is needed to determine exactly what is causing the illnesses. In all of the cases across the nation, it does not appear that there is an infectious disease involved.

Vaping among high school students increased by 78% from 2017 to 2018, and rose by 48% among middle school students during that same time period, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The FDA believes the sharp increase stems from the use of USB-flash-drive-like e-cigarettes, including the JUUL product, which have become majorly popular among young people.

More than 3.6 million kids reported using e-cigarettes in 2018, according to the FDA.
tbf, e-cigs are both figurative and literal cancer anyway

What a lot of these recent articles are the omitting is that a majority of these vape-related cases don't involve commercial brands like Juul, except one or two exceptional individuals (i.e. teen white girls) who chain-vaped every day for years.

The problem really is related to cannabis oil vaping (which is a lot heavier & has a higher smoke point than pg/vg), along with the disgustin fact that the vast majority of people who vape don't clean the parts that they're sucking on.

Then there's people who actually vape while they shit; as in vooping.

It's no wonder people are ending up with all different kinds of wack pneumonias due to fuck knows what kind of oils and pathogens being atomized straight into the lungs.

Vaping has got to be the only thing that makes smoking regular old cigarettes look less douchy

I got a juul to ween myself off of cigarettes a while back, it's nice to get a nicotine buzz indoors without stinking the place up. But I didn't feel like it was very addictive I just stopped vaping when it died one day.

It was stupid when they did it to cigarettes, and it's stupid now.

Vaping does look ridiculous, but this is even more exceptional. Fast food without moderation causes obesity, we gonna ban that as well? How about alcohol? It causes liver issues. Regular cigarettes cause lung cancer. Won't somebody PLEASE think of the children!

Fucking nanny state... People know the risks when they choose to do unhealthy things. Let them make their own choices instead of Big Daddy Government deciding what is and isn't acceptable.

I didn't know about vooping but now I need to know more. e-cigs aren't hot? Or rather, hot enough to kill pathogens you're inhaling with the mangoberry clouds?

It's appalling just how much people will sign away to the government to keep from being held accountable for being terrible absentee parents, isn't it?

State that has city where 68% of murders and rapes go unsolved (Detroit) focuses time and money on stupid shit instead.

Detroit doesn't even have cops that patrol the neighborhoods. It's kind of understood that there's no fixing that area.

That being said, (((Gretchen Whitmer))) is Michigan's personal Margaret Thatcher, and this "MUH SAVE THE CHILDREN" knobgobbelry is more proof that women are unfit for positions of power. With a name like Gretchen, you know her asshole is clenched tight enough to make diamonds.
Flavored e-cig juice isn't to attract kids, it's to make it taste less like shit. Not that I'd know anything about that. I don't vape, only faggots vape.

I vape sometimes (like when drinking figure it’s better than buying a pack of smokes and then having leftovers), but even with that bias fuck off government. Let people do what they fucking want to ffs. Hey we got murders and people are(were?) just burning houses down, but gdi we banned flavors!
