Honestly, especially in this Hollywood climate, can you think of something like Metal Gear Solid being made faithfully? After Ghost in the Shell, after the Battle Angel Alita trailers.... After Dragonball Z....

At best the movie is forgettable, at worst it ends up so cringy you want to drive your thumbs through your eyesockets.

There's one difference here though, those movies were pretty much made by american directors that weren't huge fanboys or in some cases even fans of the source material.

Jordan Roberts is a big fanboy of metal gear, his 31 day fanart fest where he just sperged about things he wishes he could expose to a larger audience about metal gear has me hopeful. Especially when he said something like "People always assume I'm going to adapt MGS1 or 3 but I feel the MSX games have a place in there too because they're not as well recognized." He truly understands why fans like MGS and wants to expose those elements to a larger audience instead of just doing a dragonball evolution and taking names and the basic concept. He's been talking about stuff like the relationship between technology and humanity that's a big part of metal gear that he definitely wants to be a part of his movie, about the repetition of war between Big Boss and Solid Snake, about the military surrealism and supernatural elements at play, even about how characters like Otacon and Ocelot are such important characters that reflect on Snake and the player.

Like you compare the understanding Jordan Roberts has about the source material and the respect for it that he has to shit like that or the Silent Hill movie where the director didn't understand the basic story of the first game and thought it was about witches and just added things because he wanted to see a hot woman run around for an entire movie but then the studio wanted a male character so he just shoved one in and ruined any tension the movie had.

Unless the studio or producers completely fuck this movie into the ground this movie looks like it's in good hands with a competent director who cares a lot about the franchise.

He even got David Hayter to come and make a short recorded speech to end his MGS 31st anniversary celebration

On one hand, metal gear and Hideo Kojima are deeply intertwined, you can't have MGS without Hideo.

On the other, having someone else write the story might have the plot make sense.
