Why the hell did they make Betty Brant look like Gwen Stacy anyway? That was just a weird decision.

Actually, it was one of the consequences of the two studios (Sony and Marvel/Disney) having "joint custody" of Spider-Man.

Sony agreed to share Spidey with Disney ... But under a LOT of conditions. One of the main conditions was that a lot of the original comic book characters (like Mary Jane, Aunt May, Uncle Ben, etc.) are allowed to either be completely omitted from the MCU, or that the characters could be included with drastic changes (including appearance).

This explains why Tony Stark is basically Spidey's "Uncle Ben" in the MCU, why Aunt May is young and hot, why Zendaya was cast as MJ ... I could go on.

This condition was made during the deal so that Sony could keep the option of making their own Spider-Man movies if they wanted.

Or the deleted scene of her beating up a guy for flirting with her
I was going to use that as an example, but I don't think it quite counts since it's not in the final cut?

The fact that they filmed that scene at all makes the movie's agenda pretty clear, though.

And the scene that was left in the movie was bad enough. A guy telling you to smile justifies stealing from him/commiting an actual crime. Mmmmmkay.

Shill time; I'm not familiar with super OG Carol Danvers but everything I'd seen about her prior to the "We're gonna try and make her lady Superman and see if that works" suggested the character sactually is canonically an uberbitch, and that smacking around the biker was completely in character.

At any rate, I kind of wish they'd lean more into that as opposed to backing away from it. A douchey Carol Danvers that is forced to act like a "hero" when she's actually a raging bitch who just wants to be essentially a mercenary and isn't able to actually lead anyone else worth a shit sounds infinitely more appealing than... lady Superman.

The flaw wasn't that she took a guys bike, it's that she didn't keep doing that kind of shit the rest of the time. She's a super soldier who thinks she's still in the middle of a very intense, incredibly important mission where she's being hunted, and then just sort of "yeah whatever"s after a few hours. Why? I want to see her freak the fuck out and keep being a psycho bitch for a little bit.

I think you touched up on something interesting, here. I think the movie lacked consistency in proper storytelling and proper character arcs. No matter what Carol did, or how she acted, the movie kept telling us how "Carol is an ultra badass to look up to." She does bad stuff throughout the movie, but the movie never ever places responsibility on the titular character. It's like the anti-Iron Man ... And it doesn't work in the slightest.

From a storytelling standpoint, Carol should have been absolutely crushed when she discovered the truth about the Skrulls and the Kree; it should have been a character-building, learning moment for her. However, she continues to act in the way that she does after the huge revelation. Her reaction to the truth was basically a non-reaction, really. She was like "Well okay, let me beat up the bad guys now." The only lesson that she really learns is that she is even "more awesome" than she already knew. She goes from unknowingly committing genocide against innocents to crashing through multiple ships full of Kree members who were brainwashed just like her (as the movie establishes that the Kree builds their armies on brainwashing others). She even yells "WOOOO!" while she's killing those thousands of people, clearly enjoying herself like a psychopath. This is hardly a HERo. She behaves like a villain throughout the entire movie.

The movie keeps telling us there's substance, but it completely fails at showcasing that said-substance, based on how woefully one-note the titular character is. And I really do think that she is so one-note because Marvel and Disney wanted Captain Marvel to be a "symbol for wamen and girls to look up to," so they made her look so "tough, strong, and cool" throughout the entire film with no flaws, despite the fact that the story didn't call for that kind of character at all.

All politics and agendas aside, I don't think that Captain Marvel works as a film. And the biggest thing holding the film back is Captain Marvel herself. There is a huge disconnect with the story Marvel tried to tell and the character they chose to lead that story.

It should have been the midway point of the movie, and confused her as to what was real or not.

The Skrulls transform, so their main weapon is deception. She already knows they can read minds and immediately assumes they may implanted something in her brain that fucked her up.At no point after the revelation does she keep these things in mind, presumably because main Skrull whose name I can't recall pinky swore he was being forealsies. Why? Why would she just roll with it. Rambeau and Fury didn't know it was true any more than she did, so it's not like they could have handwaved it as them assuring her it was the truth.

My version? The same thing happens, but way earlierr. Her breakdown is a legitimate breakdown, she freaks the fuck out and as she's melting down, she Super Sayains and it fucks up her weird cripple-chip they put in her, allowing her to fly again. This fucks her up more, and she just yeets the fuck off the planet for a while. Plot plot plot, Jude Law character finds her and realizes the chip is fucked up and she can cuck him at any given time, but mentally she's still a mess and is still halfway erring on the side of trusting him and manipulates that. More plot happens and it seems like she assumes the Skrulls were full of shit and is going to kill them, THEN the "refugee ship" twist and she starts second guessing herself again. THEN Jude Law and Co assume the brainwashing has faded and she's turned on them and try to kill her. Because the cripple-chip has fucked up by this point, nothing they do does kill her, but the attempt makes it apparent that they were indeed the villains all along, so then she turns on them and then the rest plays out as normal.

All of that is only like 3 or 4 key scenes, and then essentially the same movie. I have the opposite conclusion, they have a lot they could do with the character, and could very easily have done it, and chose not too. Like I said in my initial rundown when I saw it, they were determined to make it a quirky, Whedon-influenced comedy, and (barring the Brie/SLJ shit which I legit liked), all of it was cringeinducingly bad.

That, however, was shit they added, and with my (again, very limited) knowledge of the character, I think what I just shat out would have not only flowed better for that narrative, but made that a much more interesting character going forward.

Comics Carol was, in fact, a massive tool. Civil War 2 had her actively justifying killing the Hulk while he was in Bruce Banner mode, despite him not being a threat. She's also advocated for Skrull Genocide in a few of the comics, IIRC. She's basically Captain America but with a more utilitarian set of morals- "If it's for the greater good, then it can't possibly be wrong."

The fact that they just turned her into bitchy superhero feminist is not just an insult to the fans, it's a slap in the face to a beloved comic book character.

Task Master doesnt have a skull mask so I'm not gonna watch it!
I kind of like it, actually...

I would personally have given him more of an "Army of Two" style ballistic facemask, but all in all this is one MCU design that I'm probably going to buy the Hasbro action figure of, should I happen across one on the shelves (and anyway, the really important thing about adapting Taskmaster to the screen is that he should consistently wreck all the Avengers' shit and make it look easy).

My version? The same thing happens... and then essentially the same movie.
I still can't believe they retconned the fucking Skrulls as innocent refugees.

No one ever had to ask her to smile, that's for sure.

Comics Carol Danvers is a ends-justifies-the-means bitch. But at least some of the time the comics actually acknowledge this unlike the movie which treats her as beyond reproach. The earlier version of her used to fly around with her arse out and was totally fine with it.

They updated the costume and hairstyle to be more "empowered" but she remained a difficult to deal with hard-ass. I don't mind the comics version usually because the comics don't make everyone else fall over themselves to tell how better than everyone else she is all the time. At least writers outside of her comic do.

I'm kind of jonesing for a morally ambiguous Marvel superhero that actually enjoys the powers of ultra violence they have. That version of Carol would have been really fun to watch.

I would actually pay money to see smug ass Larson playing Carol in Civil War 2 or a MCU-derived spinoff of the same, especially considering Comics Carol treated a lot of the MCU's faves (Hulk, Iron Man, Hawkeye,) like shit.

Hey, I liked the original Dazzler from the 70's back when she was a disco dancer.

Everything after that was terrible. Especially when she was a punk rocker.
Her power is to literally give you a drug trip, only without the actually being high part. I'm sure she's great at raves, but that doesn't mean I'm going to play as her in the xmen arcade game.

I think her ultra-80s "spandex + bomber jacket + headband" costume was great, actually, but that may just be the result of all those Saturday afternoons I spent dropping quarters in the local arcade's old Konami X-Men machine. 🤔

But sHe HaD tO bE a RoLe MoDeL fOr WaMeN. Thus, any sort of interesting thing they could have done with Carol was thrown out the window.

I haven't seen this series yet, but I've been told that The Boys is spectacular ... And that a lot of the heroes in it are, in fact, complete psychopaths who are high on their power.

Someone should adapt that one Dark Horse comic about human resistance soldiers in a post-apocalyptic world dominated by super-powered warlords.

The Boys reminded me of a bad romantic comedy where every problem is caused by the characters' inability to hold normal conversations.

I guess I misinterpreted "revival" as "reboot". Still, I don't trust them with it.

Plus it's a shame Spiderman can't be involved. It makes more sense for him to be in the street level heros' world than the Avengers. But that ship has sailed.
Daredevil being Peter's mentor and surrogate father figure would make more sense to me than Iron Man TBH.
