I’m very interested in getting acrylics. Do any kiwis have any cons to them? Or what to look for in a good salon? What is typical salon protocol about tipping as well?

20% gratuity is kind of standard for personal care stuff. If I was getting a full set of acrylics done (not a fill and not just a regular mani/pedi) I might tip 25% if the service was really good. In this context "really good" would be the nail tech answering all your questions and explaining the process because it's something you're getting for the first time.

Acrylics will destroy your natural nails. EDIT: Not permanently, but they will be damaged for a while if you wear acrylics for an extended period of time

You can google for nail salon horror stories (not trying to scare you, but check it out). If, after getting your nails done, your fingers are itching or burning this most likely means youre allergic. The first reaction may not be so bad but subsequent exposures can cause you to react more severely.

Thank you, my main concern is getting some gross/weird fungus or something and having my hands fall off. Having my nail's temporarily destroyed seems worth it for that sweet length/style tho

If you ever had a set were they worth the upkeep/salon trips every 2-3 weeks?

In regards to the fungus- your nails should be cleaned, dried, and sanitized. There should be no polish on your nails beforehand, it should be removed with acetone or any nail polish remover. Your hands should never be damp or wet; Moisture fosters bacteria and fungi. A spray or liquid sanitizer should be applied to your nails to combat this too.
I’ve only had one set and I had them removed hastily because I feared the damage. I wore mine for a weekend event and they were pretty dry and raw afterwards. My nails are historically shitty however so it could be just a me issue.
Not related, but if you have a picture of the design you have in mind, it’d be nice to see :)

Is there a thread about discontinued beauty items you wish were still made? Because I would sell a kidney for more of Max Factors rosewater lipstain, Freeman's White River Musk perfume, or Fashion Fair Number Five perfume. I also can't find any clear mascara in any store near me. What the hell? *sigh*

Discontinued beauty products that you love is just the worst! Sometimes you find something that is SO good that it becomes a staple in your makeup/beauty routine, so it feels awful when those kind of items get discontinued.

Just to participate in this topic a bit, here are two discontinued beauty products that I miss terribly:

1. MAC's "Viva Glam Cyndi" lipstick and lipglass: Back in 2010, MAC did a collab with Cyndi Lauper and Lady Gaga for their Viva Glam charity. I bought SO many backups of the Cyndi lip products, and used every bit of it. The particular shade of red was really unique ... I'd say it was a "strawberry red-coral." To this day, I've yet to find a proper dupe ... Though I might splurge on Besame Cosmetic's "Mickey Mouse Red" lipstick. Based on the photos I've seen of it, it reminds me a lot of my beloved Viva Glam Cyndi. Haha.

2. Miss Dior Cherie 2007 perfume: SUCH an amazing perfume. It was very youthful and girly, but not at all immature. The scent notes were crazy: patchouli, musk, rose, caramel, strawberry, and ... Popcorn! Unfortunately, Dior has reformulated the fragrance time and time again. It just smells like a patchouli bomb to me now. I still have a tiny, baby sample bottle of the 2007 formula that I have been savoring for years now. I'll be so sad on the day I finally finish it.

Might just be a dumb beauty hack that either everyone knows or no one will see but...

If you have annoyingly fine and silky hair, as in to the point elastic won't stay in, rub some pomade on your hair ties. Also spraying anti static spray (for clothing) on your hair brush is great.

Good tips. My hair is so baby-fine that pomade doesn't even work half the time.

I have a backteasing comb/brush tool that I use to "rat" my hair so elastics stay in. It doesn't show because I only have to do it in a teeny-tiny spot to achieve enough "grab", and if you're gentle it's not damaging to your hair. Mine looks kinda like this

Just scored a super cute F21 crop top after I saw my coworker wear that one on her off day- and for less than 10 bucks!

On a side note, I don't really get crop sweaters. It's true you can wear one with a cami (which I've considered), but to me it feels like you'd be hot in your arms and cool with the torso cut off. It's probably just me living in the Southeastern states, given that the weather here's been climbing into the upper 70s.

Hello friends - I was wondering if you could help me with a recommendation?

I'm looking for liquid liners to replace my KVD Tattoo Liner (Trooper). The blacker, the better. Just looking for something pigmented that I can get a good edge/precision control with. I've heard good things about Fenty, but was curious if you gorls had any opinions or recommendations.

I've recommended it here before, but try Stila Stay All Day. It's blacker than Trooper imo.

I have a friend who swears by Jeffree Star's liquid lipsticks for her eyeliner, she just uses a thin brush. Apparently it lasts a damn long time and is super black.

Drugstore: NYX Epic Ink, same brush tip, super black. If you aren't looking for waterproof and just blackest black liquid liners, I can personally say I love the NYX matte liquid liner. I also love the Wet n Wild H20 liner, but the applicator is hot garbage and I have to use an actual brush to apply.

Mid/High-end: I have multiple GWP Clinique Pretty Easy Liquid Liners, and I can attest that they're nice fucking liners. Very black, has that same brush like tip KVD uses. Same price at $22.
Everyone and their mother recommends stila's liners, and I do the same. If you want waterproof, go with this one. Nice dark black too.

As someone who LOVES the Kat Von D tattoo liner (much to my chagrin), I have been on the hunt for a "New Holy Grail" liquid liner for close to a year now.

As of late, I've been using the NYX Matte Liquid Liner. The brush is not nearly as good as the KvD liner, but it's agreeable enough for someone like me (who is typically terrible at applying eyeliner). I like the formula, too. While it's not waterproof, I've found that it does last quite a long time on me with no issues of smudging or flaking.

I'm going to try out the NYX Epic Ink soon, because if I can get good quality makeup for cheap, then hell yeah I'm going to go with that option. I will eventually give the Stila liner a whirl, too. Stila has consistently been a solid makeup brand for me (I still use their Kitten eyeshadow like it's nobody's business, btw-- Best eyeshadow of all time for me), so I feel dumb for not having tried their liquid eyeliner yet.

What's a good way to repair nails that are damaged from nail polish?

flex tape.

Seriously though, I guess it depends on the damage?

If you've got top layers of your nail plate flaking off, but the nail is otherwise structurally sound, I would clip anything that would snag day to day, and let the nail get as much air as possible. Use jojoba or argan oil on your cuticle area to help strengthen the nail as it grows out, but avoid damaged areas. I had a stick on nail phase that fucked with my nails, but doing the above helped tremendously.

If you have more structural cracks or something like that, get that assessed by a manicurist. Had a friend who slammed her manicure in a car door once. The next day she visited a salon and they helped "patch" the natural nail for her

Nothing destroyed. Just stained. I'm looking for a quick way to get rid of the stains from the polish.

I've tried two that are very similar, and pretty good. The first one is the Physicians Formula eye booster liquid liner, which is also a serum for the eyelashes, has the same brush, and has brown and black tones. I used it for some time, but the black tone I used wasn't very pigmented, although the ultra black one supposedly is a lot better. This one costs $11.49 at their webpage.
The other one is the NYX epic ink liner. It's really pigmented, same brush again, and is pretty cheap as well. The only "buts" I find are that it only comes in black, and at least where I live, it's hard to find because everyone uses it. This is the one I use now, because they don't sell KVD where I live, many of the reviews I've seen say that it's almost exactly the same thing, and I'm not giving my money to an anti-vaxxer. This one costs $9.00 on the NYX website.
