Me, me! Shamefully I never attend meetups since they're pretty far out and I'm very shy, just wear it to conventions and occasionally around the house when I'm feeling frilly. Most of my lolita closet is Baby and Innocent World with super-super occasional splatters of Moitie. What JSK are you ordering?
I'm planning on getting memorial library in black plus a bunch of other things to pad my wardrobe. I love AP and Baby, but I've never been able to have the funds to buy it before now.
I want together the confidence to be a lifestyle lolita but I'm so nervous as well. I love my frills and I want to get true most out of them

Hair oils are great and all, but have you tried just switching over to a boar bristle brush? I got one from Amazon for $35 and it's changed my hair. My hair is silky and soft, long and shiny with fewer breaks - just using it once a day and washing my hair every third day. If the ends feel too dry after washing, I warm a dab of pure shea butter between my hands, get some on my fingertips, and work it into the ends.

See, I have the opposite problem. My roots get extremely oily and my ends get extremely dry after a couple of days. It doesn't matter what products I'm using, or how often I brush my hair, that always happens. Dry shampoo doesn't help, either, I really only carry it around in the summer for a quick fix when I'm sweating a lot.

I have had a lot more success with thinner, clear oils that absorb more quickly, though. They don't just sit on the surface of your hair.

Here's another question for you gurus.

I have Kailyn-Wilcher bad skin (thanks genetics!). There is not one part of my face that is a clear, uniform skin shade. I was using the traditional neutrogena/clearasil/biore/etc. shit for a while, then I switched to Dr. Bronner's tea tree soap and my skin cleared up pretty well but not well enough for me to feel comfortable going without foundation/concealer. Plus, if I don't use those products, my skin literally gets damp with oil, all over my face. It's disgusting and I hate having to layer on the slap if I want to cover all my red bumps and scars and huge fucking pores.

I tried to go to a dermatologist and they took one glance at me and prescribed shit I'm allergic to, which gave me a rash and also hurt.

I'm starting to break out again. I've got two monsters on my forehead right now (one of which is a TRIPLE header) and I get them on my cheeks. I change my pillowcase every other day, I'm drinking more water, I wash my hair. Are there any good products for an oil-slick like me??

1) Please don't use soap on your face. Or anything that's made for your body. The skin on your face is a lot more delicate and easily-upset.

2) Because your skin is so inflamed, I would recommend that you do some research (I hate to say that but I'm very tired right now and I don't feel like re-writing my dissertation lol) on anti-inflammatory ingredients and seek out products that contain them. Stuff that's typically advertised for acneic skin isn't great for... anybody, really. They're nearly always too stripping and can make already-inflamed acne even worse.

Once you get your face calmed down, you can start using stuff that's got some type of chemical exfoliant in it. The benefits of that will be twofold: you'll see gradual reduction in the appearance of scars and discoloration, and the spots you do get will start to become smaller and easier to extract. Or at least, that was my experience, I obviously can't speak for everyone but I went from getting cystic acne to tiny little spots. Just make sure you're using a nice, soothing moisturizer and sun protection every day. And, oil cleansing is beneficial to all skin types, because it gets rid of the surface oil on your face so your cleanser can work more effectively.

I've pimped this brand a few times, but it's definitely worth checking out. None of the products cost more than $10 so you could get a decent regimen started for not a lot of money.

And feel free to PM me anytime, this is literally what I went to school for and even if I don't remember something, I still have my textbooks and notes and stuff and I'm more than happy to help.

Hey Julep crew, have any of you ever used their skincare? I tested out their clear SPF 40 at Ulta today and it felt pretty good and I still haven't had a reaction to it, but I was wondering if their products were worth it or not. I'm going back and forth as to whether I'm going to switch to something like that, or if I'm just going to get the new UD Urban Defense primer. I'm not 100% sure I really need a primer, since I use powder foundation and it doesn't seem to make that big a difference unless it has oil control, but both products are clear SPF which is what I'm looking for.
I really like Julep's skincare stuff. The Night Shift sleeping mask is pretty awesome, and I use a little bit of the Bare Face oil to remove my liquid lipsticks and waterproof eyeliner/mascara.

That's good to hear! I was reading some of the reviews of the SPF and it looks really promising, so I think I'll give it a try when I run out of my current stuff. It's got a lot of hydrating ingredients but it didn't feel too heavy when I swatched it so I'm pretty sure I'll be alright.

Just going to leave this here

Can anyone recommend a good setting spray that keeps my face dewy? Every spray I've tried so far has failed and just ends up making my face dry and matte looking.

So I have super sensitive, super fair, turns-red-if-you-look-at-it-wrong type skin and at esthetician school we just got a huge awesome kit of professional grade stuff from Dermalogica. Of course, the teacher wants us to use it over the next month since they are some of the products we use in the clinic, and I'm terrified my skin is going to go nuts. I've just calmed my skin down after the last facial I had where I broke out like crazy. (I use the Body Shop tea tree line - I know it's not high end, but my skin accepts it better than anything else I've tried in the past, including a stint with Dermalogica, though not this particular line.)

I used the ultra-calming line from the kit last night other than the pre-cleanser (another scary product because oil, although I know the logic behind it now), and this morning my face is still clear, no new pimples or anything. I'm going to be using this line for the next month or so, so I'll keep you guys updated in case anyone else has a similar skin type. I ruin my skin so you don't have to.

I got a sample of the barrier repair, I liked it a lot. And as you can probably tell from many of my posts in this thread, I have incredibly sensitive skin, lol.

I'd definitely be interested in hearing your thoughts on the full line though, because I've been looking at it a bit and I don't always trust website reviews. Plus, you're in school for that sort of thing, so you're not going to be like "this product sucks because my skin is oily but I picked up the Ultra-Mega-Super-Moisture Cream anyway and it broke me out!!!"

Korean brand "all day tight make up fixer " by so natural leaves a bit of a sheen.
Combining urban decays all nighter and their vitamin spray gives a few hours extra wear and a nice effect aswell.

It's been so hard to get people out of that OIL = BAD mentality. I mentioned using Ponds cold cream to remove my makeup one day and one of my friends flipped her shit, "OH no, that's got oils in it, don't use that, you'll get zits!" - I've been using it for years, my skin is very clear and I don't have any issues at all. A lot of the oil-free stuff dries my skin out horribly.

My no-buy of stuff doesn't include 1) restocking a product I use up or 2) using a gift card on whatever my shriveled little heart desires.

I had a promotional gift card set to expire in May for Bloomingdale's so I treated myself to a Heidi Klum bra and thong set since I've bought nothing but Aerie bras/undies or UO undies for years.

My Lush giftcard from my birthday last year had twice the amount let on it than I thought because apparently I can't read the receipt properly. I have enough friggin' bath bombs (thanks bogo Christmas sale), I don't need more soap and stuff, and I really just needed a new facial cleanser. I've been a huge fan of Dark Angels (love that licorice-y smell and I feel so clean) but I realized it has probably been drying me out a little too much. The sales associate sold me on Herbalism and made me a sample of Vanishing Cream to try out. The plus side is my shower isn't going to get fucking wrecked by charcoal every few days too.

I also had a good chunk of an Amazon gift card so I bought the Lime Crime Venus II palette. I am 100% in love with it. I never thought I'd wear something like "Mustard" but it looks incredible! Of all the palettes I've bought I end up using both of the Venus ones and the ABH Modern Renaissance the most.

I've gotten so much more creative with my makeup since I've toned down the "OMGWANT" of seeing something new. I've tossed so many cheaper things too, or stuff that just wasn't working.

Be careful with Herbalism, it worked ok for me for a little bit but then I started breaking out worse than ever. Apparently the little ground almonds in it can sometimes be too harsh for skin and make tiny cuts which can get inflamed and lead to breakouts. It feels really fun to smush in your fingers though. I liked Dark Angels when I got some for Christmas but I couldn't use it every day because it dried me out too much.

EDIT: Ok so at the advice of @fire_fly I went out and got some Formula 10.0.6 (plus one fun bubbling Korean skin product on sale). I'm so excited to try it!!

I spent a long time in Ulta today, just wandering around and looking at what's new. The location I was in had a new K-beauty section in the prestige part of the store, so I played with a lot of the new products and I found a new moisturizer I might try once I run out of my day cream, the Thank You Farmer True Water light gel cream. It reminded me a lot of the BioElements Beyond Hydration moisturizer I used to use, but it didn't give my skin that weird tacky feeling once it dried and it just soaked in and made my skin feel really soft. There was also a little kit for I think $19 that had a bunch of samples and travel sizes in it that I might invest in soon.

I ended up walking out with a new Butter London lip gloss, from their Pantone collection. I got "Rich Gold", which is a really pretty antique gold with green sparkles, and eventually I want to get "Buttercream" (ecru with pink shimmer) and "Sparkling Green" (sheer white with green shimmer and sparkle).

It's understandable, seeing how certain oils will break you out (see: the coconut oil craze and that shit is comedogenic as hell), plus it doesn't seem logical to put oil on your face. But there are oils that have lots of benefits like clinging to sebum and cleaning OUT your pores.

The Dermalogica precleanser smells so nice and it really does do a fantastic job of taking my makeup off. About 3 days in and my skin is still clear on all this new stuff. No catastrophic eruptions yet! New record for new products on me.:like:

I bought myself another travel sized Urban Decay's setting spray. Thank God for that previous 20% off sale on their site.

As for Black Moon Cosmetics, I might buy the Black Metal Armageddon liquid lipstick when I get my tax return. That and probably the Modern Renaissance palette (although I am nervous about it being too warm on me).

I'm new to this one. Knew of its existence, but I was too skittish.
But screw it! Here we go:
Can anybody recommend a good foundation for a person who isn't quite used to having stuff on their face? Like, my skin is actually pretty good, but whenever I put anything more than mascara, brow filler, or BB cream, I (I think it might actually mostly be psychological, but) I feel like I'm itchy constantly, that I'm greasy, etc.
I really want to try playing around with some makeup. Anything helps! Thanks. :feels:
