So does anyone here have any experience with getting hime-cuts?

Long story short I've gotten into the whole Lolita fashion thing and been contemplating getting the hime cut, but am terrified that it will only butcher my hair.

A friend of mine had one. It looked pretty good on her, but I imagine it comes down to the shape of your face and the quality of the stylist you have it done by. Some of them look jarring I've noticed. Others look pretty cute. So unfortunately my advice doesn't really go further than "your mileage may vary."

I have no experience with that particular hair style, but a couple of years ago I decided to go from having waist length hair in my natural color to having platinum blonde chin-length hair. I kept that hair for about a year and it was costly and required a lot of maintenance. The problem was, once you decide you don't want short platinum blonde hair anymore, it takes a while to grow out and the bleached part of your hair doesn't want to hold onto color. Your options are limited by previous choices. So my advice would be, basically, when considering hair that might be a pain in the ass to change back once you tire of it, is to ask yourself if it's really worth it. My hair looked pretty cool for a year, but I would probably be happier with it if it looked the way it did three years ago instead of the way it does now.

does anyone have any cleaning recommendations for someone with oily skin and large pores? acne is hardly a problem, so at least there's that. also, are facial scrubs by brands like burt's bees acceptable? i've seen it in my grocery store and it looks tempting, but my finger isn't on the pulse of the beauty market by any means, so if it's a no-no, i wouldn't know.

I want to second @Wafflehaus rec for Lush's Dark Angels. It's fairly messy to use so I use it only in the shower (makes it easier to rinse) but it's really great for getting your skin to regulate its oiliness. It's also a pretty good exfoliant but you don't really need to 'scrub' with it if you don't want. Also it's easy to just use on the oily bits of your face if you have dry cheeks etc.

I also find Lush's Fresh Farmacy soap really good for everyday facewashing, getting oiliness gone, and especially for drying up occasional nasties. It doesn't dry out the rest of your face and make it sore so two thumbs up. My pops uses it to control his rosecea too and my bro finds it really helps his acne. It doesn't use up too fast so it's worth getting a smallish bit and seeing how you get on with it.

Facemasks once a week are good for oiliness too as long as you use something pretty gentle. Don't use any cleanser that's really harsh or stripping because that just leaves you with even more oil and sore face skin to boot.

A mattifying moisturiser also helps a lot. The one I like best is also a Lush one, Vanishing Cream. It's nice and light and keeps dry bits nice and oily bits less-oily and looking matte. It's a good base to add some colour to, as well, if you're into that. It's not the cheapest but you don't need much.

That's my haircut, lmao, although absolutely not for lolita reasons. (I adore the lolita aesthetic but there's a point at which you're too old and too busty for actually wearing it and I passed both those points a long time ago. I have a ridic amount of suitably lolita accessories though because, well, why not)

Hair is naturally long and poker straight so it works on me with like, no effort. (Yes. That's why I have it) I can straighten it for EXTRA STRAIGHTS but I've got thick hair so I don't generally bother. It basically hangs where I leave it.

Tbh if you have hair like mine it's 100% unproblematic but I don't know how it would work for curly girlies. I tihnk you had trouble with flyaways you would need to think about using a smoothing conditioner.

Can anyone recommend a low to high-end mascara that is cruelty-free? I have my sights currently on Urban Decay's Perversion mascara.

Also, would anyone recommend a shaved sides hairstyle for someone who has thick and curly/wavy hair? Thank you.

I would say the comfort of maintaining depends on how quick your hair grows. Mine grows super fast, so I needed to update my sideshave often, which meant begging someone to cut it for me since I don't like putting buzzy things near my head by myself.

Perversion is definitely a good pick. I'm also a fan of TF's Better than Sex (the original, non waterproof version). Buxom Lash is fanfuckingtastic, but I can't remember if they're cruelty free off the top of my head.

Also, my hair is naturally wavy, and I had a sidecut for a pretty long time. IMO sidecuts look better on people with wavy or curly hair anyway.

It could be really cute, but if your hair has any wave to it at all you'll need to have the patience to style it. Otherwise, I'll just recommend you go to a good stylist, and you'll be fine.

I quite like Perversion, but my favorite right now has to be the Tarteist mascara by Tarte. It doesn't bother my eyes but it gives crazy volume and it's jet-jet black, I love it.

And you can really do any style you want. I've seen curly girls with all sorts of undercuts, mohawks, etc. and if you take care of your hair and wear the style with confidence, it'll look fabulous.

I'm having a meltdown and am very tempted to dye my hair black and buzz it all off. Anyone got any experiences with buzzcuts?

Yes! I had to Sinead O'Conner it a couple of years ago, my hair just got too fried and I decided to start fresh (I'm getting better at leaving my hair alone, I swear, lol). If you're used to short hair it won't be too jarring but for me, I already hate having short hair and it was only out of necessity that I cut it in the first place, so having a buzzcut wasn't too fun.

Plus my hair grows out of the top of my head at a 70-degree angle and it's thick and coarse, so I couldn't do anything with it for MONTHS except plaster it down with gel.

I have very kinky/wavy ethnic hair and I know I couldn't upkeep a hime cut. I can't get it that straight and if I could, one drop of water would turn it into a dandelion. Cute for those who can though.

Did anybody see the Australian TV show Wentworth? The main star had really curly hair, natural I think, and shaved it on the sides. Looked badass.

If you have never been bald or nearly before, it's interesting. Personally, I looked like shit but it was nice having all that virgin hair grow in. And it wasn't that curly at first. Now it's past my shoulders, but I got to play with pixie cuts. Very easy for styling but short doesn't suit my face so now it stays long. I get a lot of compliments on my hair, and I only wash it weekly. I get a weekly wash and blowout just like our grannies used to do. But I have very kinky, wavy hair that tends to be dry, even the scalp, so it is not dirty.

As for lashes, I get extensions so no more mascara. Love them.

Hey wait, is this powerleveling? I feel like I'm doing something bad. :).

I love this thread.

Anyone have a great eye cream to recommend? I'm in the preventative stage where I don't have fine lines yet and want to avoid them as long as possible.

Wentworth is fucking amazing. I can't wait until season 5 airs.

Back on topic: all of this hair talk is making me so excited to dye my hair later this month. I'm getting a black to purple to fuschia ombre (after having oil slick hair for about six months, which is a really long time for me), and I'm super excited.

personally, i like the Simple Soothing Eye Balm but i mainly use that for under-eye darkness. it feels really nice though, and it works pretty well too. but they do also offer an age resisting cream, so maybe that'd be one to look at? i've never personally been let down by simple's eye stuff though.

I've been using the Skyn Iceland Icelandic Relief eye cream and it's amazing. Very moisturizing, soothing, and you only need a tiny little bit so that pot will last you a long time. I have the pen (it came in a kit) and I'll probably get 2-3 months out of that, so I imagine the jar would take me half the year to use up.

I fucking love ombre hair and that sounds gorgeous. I did my own ombre a couple years ago and loved it. My hair lightened considerably since then (lots of time in summer sun) and there's one little stripe of color left. People seem to think it's the coolest thing but I can't wait til I redo mine. Currently waiting on moving to another job before I do that. I'm a graphic/visual designer by trade so it's not out of the norm but I've interviewed at some more conservative places, plus I just feel more comfortable with a "normal" hair color at that stage anyway.

This isn't exactly product related- but I'm applying for a job as Sephora (just as a cashier, not as a makeup artist or a consultant) and I'm honestly worried my acne and not being super attractive might mean not getting the job even if I'm qualified *sigh*

For what it's worth, I've seen some girls working at various Sephoras over the years that had pretty severe acne. And a lot of employees that weren't all that attractive, either. So it's worth a shot.

I have to try. I just graduated college and need a part-time job at the moment waiting for other stuff. It would just suck to get passed up for not fitting type.

If it makes you feel any better, they'd probably pass me up, too, despite my education and previous work experience. Actually, to be honest, every cosmetic counter/beauty-oriented shop I've applied to recently has turned me down. I feel like it's because I really can't do a lot with makeup anymore due to my allergies and insanely sensitive skin. I try, but trendy stuff kinda passes me by these days.

Who are they gonna hire, the chubby Plain Jane who knows everything about everything but only ever shows up in liquid eyeliner and whatever lipstick won't tear her face up, or someone who can turn out some beautifully-applied drag makeup but may or may not be knowledgeable beyond that?
