Okay gals, got a question.

My mom wears makeup. Being an old lady on Social Security, she wears drug store stuff. Now, I'd like to get her a nice gift card for her 70th, let her treat herself to a couple hundred bucks of something she'd never buy for herself. Is Ulta good? Something else I should do?

Aww! I'm fairly drugstore myself, so stay on the line for better answers. If you have the opportunity to check out her vanity, see if she has a carefully-rationed perfume bottle that you can buy a replacement for; that plus a gift card would knock it out of the park.

The thought is sweet, but if she's elderly and on social security. Does she even know what to buy? I assume theres mostly young girls working as sales assistents at Ulta, so dunno if they even can help her that much.

The hair growth outside of the areas where there are hair naturally, they fall off. It is said so at least. I've been slathering it on for beard growth about 9 months now, and I don't have hair on my forehead. But people are different of course

Ask him if he has glaucoma! The prescription "eyelash serum" Lastisse is repackaged bimatoprost eye drops, after some smart cookie realized they could sell the side effect.
Oh yeah, I guess it could be! But he's also balding, so that's why I was assuming he might be using minoxidil in the first place, and not just naturally have long lashes.

Well-off ladies her age shop at stores, right? I mean I figure there's got to be somewhere to plop down some money. When she came to visit me a while back, she forgot her lipstick, so I took her to Dillard's to get whatever she wanted. She said it cost 5x more than what she would buy for herself and complained (mom is frugal), but you know, next time she came to see me, she had that tube and said it was the best lipstick she'd ever had.

Maybe a Dillard's gift card? I don't want to buy her a Sephora card because they sponsored that troon pederast.

This sounds like the ticket; they have a makeup counter, she's not going to an unfamiliar store, and she's got the option to spend some of it on a nice set of PJs if she can't bear spending it all on makeup.

Ulta pissed me off by platforming Dylan Mulvaney, so I also support the department store idea.

I agree with the department store. Besides being less on board with troonacy, they're usually full of classic, "mature lady with money to burn" makeup brands. There is overlap with makeup-specific shops like Ulta, but those tend to lean younger and more trendy overall.

Someone please…What is the best setting spray?

I’m trying to do my own wedding makeup but I can find a spray that locks in my eyeshadow. I get that nasty crease after 5 hours or so.

Edit:
I am also looking for something made anywhere BUT China.

I like MAC Fix + and Make Up For Ever is another brand that I trust. Personally if I needed my eye shadow to stay flawless would use a cream shadow like a MAC paint pot as my primer and then use a pressed eyeshadow over the top of that.

Also be sure to use a foundation that does not contain any SPF (zinc and titanium oxides) as they will reflect back with flash photography. There are certain brands including Make Up For Ever that make foundations with this in mind.

Ok so if you’ve used a few shades, what do you think the closest would be to Clinique’s Alabaster shade?
Clinique Alabaster has a cool neutral undertone so I would probably suggest either neutral or cool ivory from Make Up For Ever. They have a shade finder feature on that page where you can submit a picture and they help to match you, and you can also get mini sizes of the foundations.

How do I tell if my hair is fine or coarse? I have never been able to get a straight answer.

I have asked lots of people and got every response from "it's very fine" to "it's very coarse" to "I have no clue."

I ask because I have not been able to find a good shampoo. Everything makes my hair puff up like someone rubbed a balloon on my head- or leaves me oily. Right now I have horrible shoulder length hair as I grow it out to donate again. I am going insane with how puffy it gets and how much "memory" it has. If I run my hand through it, it stays puffed up. If I put my head against the back of a couch, it gets flattened and splays out to the side. Lord forbid I lay down in the middle of the day or step outside in the wind- I have to wet it to get it to comb back to a normal hairstyle.

Growing up my mom slathered this hair lotion on my "unmanageable fluffy hair", but I hate hate hate the smell. I also hate to use pomade/styling gel/hair oil as I sweat at work and it gives me acne as it melts down my face and they tend to also smell weird.

I do not look like an indie band singer, but my hair texture looks like in this picture. 1698279003234.png

your friends are conflating a few different things. coarse hair just means each strand is thick vs fine hair where each strand is thin. people get it confused /mixed in with 2 other aspects of hair descriptions also using similar terminology. 1-how much hair (thick, fine/thin, medium) and 2- what shape does your individual hair take (straight, wavy, cury etc).

hair can be any combination of the three aspects and many people (and advertisements) call them all texture which is super confusing.

I have fine, fine, wavy hair (or, fine, thin, wavy) which means each hair is thin, I don't have many individual hairs per square centimeters and it's neither straight nor curly.

The dude in that photo has medium, thick, wavy (natural bounce) hair which means each hair is of medium thickness, he has many hairs per square centimeter and his hair, when short has a lot of bounce (vs straight flat hair).

Try dry wax.

Redheads have the thickest strands but they also have the least follicles on their heads (averaging 90,000 strands). Blondes have the thinnest strands but they have a lot more of them (averaging 140,000). With brunettes it will vary, the darker the hair is the thicker the strands will be.

Different colors contain different levels of trace metals and gender is also a factor.

"Grey hair of women had more magnesium and less cadmium and lead than that of men. In males there was more magnesium and less cadmium in black hair than in hair of other colors, less zinc in blond than in black or red, more lead in brown than in black or red and more nickel in red than in brown hair."

Finer hair is more fragile so you can test the tensile strength of your hair by wetting a single strand and seeing how easy it is to break it.

Thank you two! That is interesting about mineral content in hair. I have thought about how you almost never see "salt and pepper" hair in women like you do in men. Women seem to go from their hair color to gray and then it gets whiter with time. Men seem to go straight from their hair color to a mix of white and gray. Just anecdotal from working with old people.

I think I just have a lot of hair on my head and if I can't tell if it's fine or coarse, it's somewhere in between.

I've never tried dry wax with my hair this length. I will report back.

Growing up my hair was super duper straight, but I also was white-blond as a kid but my hair got so dark it's almost black now. Maybe it got wavy too?

I have never even heard of tightlining and can’t wait to try it! Not sure how it could have passed me by, what kind of shitty female am I.

Has anyone had microblading or the like? I would love to not have to tint or even fill my eyebrows in at all but now that I’ve spent time browsing the microblading sub I’m thinking something more permanent is a really bad idea lol. The thought of just always having on point brows is so, so tempting.
I have! I think I've posted about it a few times in this thread. I wouldn't recommend it. I really liked the idea of not having to do brow makeup, but it doesn't really work that way, I still ended up having to do makeup most of the time to get the right look, especially once the microblading faded a little bit. Also, one reason I got it was because it was supposed to only last a couple of years, so I figured if I didn't like it it would fade away or I could get it removed, which was presumably cheaper than regular tattoo removal because it's more temporary. Neither of these things turned out to be the case, I got mine done about five years ago and I still have them, just faded, so I still have to wear makeup all the time or they dont look great. I dermaroll, use tretinoin, and skin exfoliators all the time and they are still there after five years. I got in touch with a tattoo removal service after getting tired of them, and it turns out it's still expensive and takes many sessions to remove for whatever reason.

They are not the worst thing ever, I would say they still look slightly better than not having eyebrows, but maybe its just cope. I still have to do my makeup all the time to cover it. I have also seen some women get it done where the tattoo migrates over time and ends up out of place, and then they have to go for the expensive tattoo removal. So overall I don't think this is a great beauty procedure and I wouldn't recommend it.

I would recommend you start with a BB cream which is a tinted moisturizer.
Just piggybacking on this to recommend IT cosmetics CC cream if you do decide to go for a base! It’s quite pricy but lasts well, I’m UK so could be different but it’s on offer quite regularly here so I buy a couple at once when it’s cheap. I love it, it’s got nice coverage without being heavy and gives me such a nice glow. Also goes on easier for me with my fingers than a brush so that’s a win too as then I don’t need to clean as many brushes.

Are you using a primer on the eyelid? I’ve tried a couple of setting sprays and the best one so far was a cheap Revolution one if they have that brand where you are.

People used to/maybe still do rave about the Urban Decay setting spray but I thought it was pretty shit and resented that I spent so much on it!

Thank you, that’s helpful! I would feel very mad if I still had to fill my eyebrows in after lol.

Thank you to whoever posted about tightlining, I love it!! It’s daily makeup for me now, wish I had discovered it before.
