UN Majory Stoneman Douglas High Students complain about new security measures

Students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School are lampooning new security measures that require them to use clear backpacks. The rule change took effect Monday as students returned to campus after spring break.

The school, located in Parkland, Florida, implemented the measure after 17 people were killed there in a shooting in February. Students and staff members are also being issued identification badges to be worn at all times, BuzzFeed News reports. Stoneman Douglas families were informed of the new rules in a letter from superintendent of Broward County Public Schools Robert Runcie, The New York Timesreported last month.

The district is also considering "using metal-detecting wands and installing permanent metal detectors," BuzzFeed News reported last month. The New York Times described the new rules as "reminiscent of security measures at airports and professional sports venues."

Stoneman Douglas students voiced their criticism of the rule — along with a healthy dose of sarcasm — Monday on Twitter.

The backpack and identification rules were announced days after the suspected shooter's brother trespassed on school property and two Stoneman Douglas students were arrested for bringing knives to school, BuzzFeed News noted.

To be perfectly fair, the chances of a second school shooting disaster happening in the place and year are probably pretty slim. But it is Florida, so all bets are off.

We always talk about California breaking off and sinking into the ocean, but Florida shouldn't be far behind on the list to get Atlantis'd.

If it's transparent, then kindly tell us what their agenda is. Looks to me like they are defending the rights of citizens against the fickle tastes of the public whipped into mobs after a crisis like a good Civil Rights organization does. Yes, the NRA are a Civil Rights group. The private ownership of arms for the defense of self, others, and property is a Civil Right you poorly misguided child.
 
As long as people don't realize they can put a gun inside a hollowed out book, binder or two sheets of paper we are safe thanks to the all-mighty clear backpack!

I'm wondering what will happen when the first LoTech school killer appears, just waiting in a closet and start bopping lone unsuspecting people over the head with a wooden mallet and dragging them inside like in a Hitman game.

Arrive to school late -> Pull fire alarm -> Massacre people.

plant bombs all over the school -> Don't tell anybody -> Detonate them all at once killing hundreds

Dunno, schools are hardly invulnerable to modern tech.

The NRA is a corporatist lobby. The 2nd amendment argument would be a lot cleaner if they'd fuck off.
 
I don't know what the students are mad about. They marched to restrict the rights of Americans and they got their own restricted in the process. Be careful what you wish for.

The 2nd Amendment argument from them would be a lot cleaner if they didn't openly say they support a ban on machine guns, and an unconstitutional executive ban on bump-stocks, and then try to say they support the 2nd amendment.

The NRA doesn't do much for gun rights besides act as a boogeyman for congress members not to vote for gun control, lest they lose their seats. They also have supported most of the most infringing gun control legislation in the country: the 1934 NFA, the 1968 GCA, and the 1986 FOPA.

The 1968 GCA benefiting local arms manufacturers in the USA, it forbids the import of all firearms into the USA, unless they meet a "sporting purpose." How do you determine if a gun has a "sporting purpose?" How can you effectively determine if a firearm could be used in a sporting context, or not? The ATF gets to decide all by themselves, not the legislators who wrote the 1968 Gun Control Act.

How do they decide what has sporting purpose? Uuuh... well if your grips are "target grips" or something we'll give you a few points, and uuh, if you hit 60 points you have a sporting firearm. That is the legislation that the NRA supported, got codified into law, and continues to support.

Oh yeah, under the 1934 National Firearms Act, any firearm with a bore of .5 inches or larger is determined a "destructive device." However, since the ATF is so nice, they declared that most 12 gauge shotguns have a "sporting purpose" (without ever defining anywhere what a 'sporting purpose' truly means) so they're not destructive devices.

Destructive device .-- The term “destructive device” means * * * (2) any type of weapon by whatever name known which will, or which may be readily converted to, expel a projectile by the acti on of an explosive or other propellant, the barrel or barrels of which have a bore of more than one -half inch in diameter, except a shotgun or shotgun shell which the Secretary or his delegate finds is generally recognized as particularly suitable for s porting purposes

So the ATF has the ability to declare any 12 or larger gauge shotgun in the USA as a destructive device, like an explosive, and jail you for 10 years for posession because tomorrow they changed the definition of "sporting purpose" for shotguns. The legality of 12 gauge and larger bore shotguns relies solely on the ATF's opinion on the time of what determines if a shotgun has a "sporting purpose" or not.

Didn't Nick Cruz have to use a clear backpack back when he went there? Shouldn't be a problem to go for a new high score on the Stoneman Douglas map if you follow his strategy of waiting until you graduate/are expelled to bring your guns to school.

Hilarious how a school of middle-class white kids is now being treated like a school of ghetto hoodrats.
 
I seem to recall most high schools requiring clear backpacks since approximately 10 minutes after Columbine, but maybe it got relaxed in the last 19 years.
