I'm in agreement with Josh about how there's no such thing as a truly selfless act because I believe 'selfless acts' can be explained by "Enlightened Self-Interest". Altruistic endeavors that promote the well-being of others are driven by the individuals' own welfare, in that they can reciprocate social benefits (in other words, brownie points).

This might sound like it's trying to say every good samaritan is scheming something, but it's the only realistic explanation to how do-gooders could even exist in the first place. If there was absolutely no benefit to you by doing a specific thing, and you KNOW there is absolutely no benefit, you'd have no reason to even think about doing it. Additionally, you'd get picked apart by everyone else that gives nary a shit about being positive. It's said that this concept is a big reason why capitalism can function as a system because without it, the only way you would be able to succeed is to lie, cheat and/or steal.

I forget who recently repeated that no one does anything for a purely selfless reason. Probably Josh, but it did anger me some. There in fact does exist a large amount of people that do what is right because they know it is the right thing to do.
I hate this argument because almost every good action will benefit the actor in some amount to some degree, I can't think of a single good action that won't benefit the actor. How many degrees of N-order effects for benefit to come back around are required before it stops being selfish? It's ridiculus and harmful, the ethos that built modern society has always been vulnerable to arguments like this and needs to be cultivated.
