My best guess is that he spends money like no tomorrow. Think of your average sport star, rapper and so on. Most of the stuff he does makes little financial sense. Does that really look like a guy that is capable of making basic investments or retirement savings?
Because he's a control freak and narcissist and he would emotionally shrivel and die without the attention and power.
What I personally have seen is that a lot of youtubers just completely leave their original audience behind just to spend 4 hours per day on twitch streaming, do a fraction of the work and earn a gorillion more money than they did doing yt videos.
He's too vain. I also believe the entire business would die without him being the face of it, especially with the loss of all the regulars that left.

Apple directly sells top quality thunderbolt/USB-C cables that meet all specifications for not too much money from real brands (Apple themselves ($$) and Caldigit ($)). OWC also sells top quality but slightly less pretty cables for even less. This pathetic venture assumes the competition is the chinese slop that has flooded amazon, but in reality their competition is reasonably priced professional grade cables from real companies catering to professionals.
Truly amazing that they fucked their Mac Address channel so hard. This is one of the few people Linus hired in recent years that appeared to have actual talent while ALSO catering to a different audience. It was refreshing, the videos were peaceful and could be interesting, it wasn’t autistic screaming about consooming and it didn’t have a real life shrek aberration assaulting your eyes. But they went the same slop-shitter route and kneecapped his videos with DBrand plastered everywhere and multi-minute sponsor spots (yes, on the Apple video you should advertise shitty overpriced earphones, following the release of a video about AirPods, smart move).
They also took the reviews of big Apple products like the new iMacs on the main channel, depriving him of relevant content to work with. They set him up to fail.
This is the only good content they ever produced. The host was clearly passionate about the subject matter and had an eye for filmmaking, the way he would set up the shots and tell the story were far above anything linus' morons had ever produced.

Just finished watching it. Take isn't anything special, although I do agree with it and his assessments. Otherwise it's fine, he's not perfect, but he's not greasy, he doesn't shoot in some kind of weird mancave, audio balance is fine if slightly quiet overall for my tastes.
It seemed like he was trying to hand things off at one point but he flubbed it. They had an insane upload schedule which turned every major project into zip ties and leak buckets, the “face” of the brand basically making cameos, and every update on his smart home project involving ripping half of out cause it doesn’t work. After the big drama they lost sponsors, had thousands cancel memberships, and were pushed to slow down their production. Their revenue took a big hit and Linus centric videos perform better, more Linus means less need for other hosts, and ultimately he didn’t want to give raises to people who he viewed as doing less work than they used to, so they left. I can’t think of any YouTube channel that successfully pivoted from personality driven content, but LTT failed at it pretty spectacularly.
But without stating the number of employees, that just shows they've been hiring and increasing their total payroll that way, not actually providing pay increases.
I just watched the video. Unfortunately, Jonathan Horst has only a surface-level understanding of graphic design. And as a result, the video is equally surface-level and error-filled. He's unable to offer a perspective deeper than his limited conceptual vocabulary allows. But he tried. I got the sense that he genuinely wanted to say something, but simply couldn't quite find the words for it. He couldn't express himself. I don't fault him. Design isn't easy, and even Apple can fuck it up (but not necessarily in the ways he thinks!). I just wish this wasn't his comeback video. Nevertheless, I wish him luck and I'm sure he'll do just fine. He's pretty talented.
