Life of Boris is a Youtube channel with the host Boris (duh) playing games, showing fine Slavic cooking and all kinds of other activities. The videos themselves tend to be pretty good and don't overstay their welcome, and the channel itself seems to devoid of drama. At least until the last half year as Boris seemed to have lost it following decreasing sub count, which are probably a combination of not uploading anything substantial for months (or low quality content) and faggots signing off because Russian = bad, as well as personal issues. This culimnated in him making a couple of shit-tier videos and then pronouncing he is stop uploading to the channel and starting a new one called Soup Kitchen Gaming.

I made a thread to see if anyone else heard else like the content, as well as trying to understand what the fuck happens that Boris abandoned a 3M+ channel to start over.

Anyways, favourite videos:

I've really enjoyed his cooking videos and I'm sad he won't be making anymore for the foreseeable future.

His videos were funny at times but he honestly reacted badly to the channel plateauing. His response to the subscriber and viewer dip while sitting on over 3 million subs came across to me as a bit childish. Like begging for sympathy while pretending to not be mad.

"I'm not mad comrades! I guess it was just time for change! Totally okay with everything I guess this is just how it goes! In soviet Russia channel subscribes to YOU!"

<Insert post about Boris never being funny>

Boris frustrates me to no end. I love his content but holy hell is his begging for subscribers annoying. I remember the first time he did this shit, back in 2016.
On the one hand I get it, it's his livelihood, without youtube he doesn't make money, but on the other, if you're that hard-up you should get a real job, blyat. 'Course I don't know exactly what the situation is like in the slavlands; maybe the job market isn't looking pretty or maybe prices have gone up on account of the whole Ukraine thing.

Some of my personal favorites for anyone who clicks on this and hasn't watched/heard of Boris before.

Yeah, I nearly unsubscribed when I saw that he put out several videos where he sits and does nothing for ten minutes. I get that it's his livelihood and all, but he handled it like a sperg, it was shameful to look at.

I'm not sure, but I think he just always wanted to do let's play videos, and people would (rightfully) complain if he did nothing but that on his channel famous for cooking videos. That's my guess as to why he just up and abandoned it.

boris kinda popularized the fetishization of slavic culture in the west (idk if there is a better word to use than fetishization), but he never really evolved past that, he always stayed the funny slav man, he got comfy and let everyone outgrow that type of content and now he doesn't know how to play catchup, so instead of staying in his little niche or going back to playing games on his main channel, he's throwing a fit , moving to a new one to try and get what few subs he can to his new one, and he'll just do what he did to begin with.

I honestly sympathize with Boris immensely over his disillusion with Youtube because I have seen it a lot, I have legit seen a lot of creators I like downsize in order to survive because Google only like video essays now. Demonetization hits harder than just tacking your shackles and it isn't far-fetched to assume the higher-ups cucked him out of enabling slavabooism.
For those of you blins that weren't there, Boris went through a rough patch. It arguably all went downhill after Russia invaded Ukraine and then a lot of personal shit happened so he probably wasn't in the right place as his channel was massively underperforming (videos barely cracking 100k on a 3M subcount) just exacerbated things. He was homeless, sick, lived in a car and if IIRC he also didn't have much job security.
You can say he overreacted and that's fair, but the truth of the matter is that it doesn't hurt any less to hear this guy that is known for being upbeat sounding defeated for something that is definitely out of his control.

I really liked Life of Boris for a brief period of time back in the day (around 2016 or so), and then kinda forgot that his channel existed. I think a lot of people went through a similar experience.

IMO it' generally is a mistake for Youtubers to talk a lot about hitting a plateau in terms of growth or viewership as if its a terrible thing. It creates a bad atmosphere - the fans who are around feel worse out of concern or a feeling that they aren't doing enough themselves. People don't like that kind of atmosphere, so they just leave. Even if a Youtuber really is going through a genuinely tough time in their life, most fans ultimately have little ability to change that and don't want to be sad, so they leave. I wasn't actively watching Boris when he hit his plateau so I can't say that this is what happened with him, but based on what people are saying it seems like that might be the case.

That being said I do have fond memories of watching his cooking videos, and he seems like a nice guy. I hope he finds his groove again, either on Youtube or doing something else.

I'm not really sold on the algorithm argument. I never had a notification for a new video missing. It's more likely that most users are subscribed to a billion channels and just miss the videos if they are not featured. Plus it's pretty clear that the majority of the audience wants Boris for his cooking videos rather than SlavJank or the billionth World of Tanks content, and this videos gets solid views. Finally, isn't the point of Patreon to cover up missing money from YouTube shenanigans?

Russia invading Ukraine really did a number on his channel and mental health. Suddenly Slavic things didn't seem so funny any longer. It's always been an open question what country he's from. The consensus seems to be that he's from Russia but was living in Estonia, though it doesn't matter, because to most Slavic=Russian.

Boris doesn't seem to be doing ok, I'm worried about him.

The caption doesnt bode well imo.
It seems pretty clear to me that especially after the invasion Youtube/Google nuked his ability to get recognition from the algorithm.

Makes me sad when he posts like this. Honestly. I hope he just continues to work and do videos without thinking about the attention or YT revenue.

All things pass. Including YouTube careers.

His faux quitting time and again doesn't help things. Whenever a YouTuber starts doing that, I'm like: shit or get off the pot. Especially when it's ostensibly a comedy channel. Most people aren't there for drama or to hear about the creator's personal travails.

Damn, haven't heard of Boris in years lol
He needs to figure some shit out to get money. Open a Patreon, get more sponsors or some shit.
Fuck the sub count and fuck Russia, I think he made a video denouncing the war in Ukraine, so I'd guess his Russian fans were not happy about that.
Hope he gets his shit together.

He's got a Patreon, but I wonder how much of it he can even get with all the legal bullshit happening.

He didn't even directly denounce the war, he was just devastated that slavic infighting like that was happening. I kinda doubt he had a very large Russian fanbase though, his content is pretty directed as westerners wanting to learn about slavic culture.

Then get a bUymeacoffe, program some kind of retarded mobile game with his own likeness, do colabs, do streaming, something to spread out. If money's his issue, nigger needs to step up and figure some new shit out. Boggles my brain how the fuck are you going to work a dream job as a famous internet man with no drama or dox, in the worst times of recent memory and still complain about hardship and beg.

He denounced Russia for sure. I even remember his video eneded with Русский военный корабль, иди нахуй. Can't find that video again tho lol
