You'd be surprised. German law is pretty based when it comes to selfdefence.
You can do basically anything to avert a lethal threat (or extreme bodily harm) to you and another person with whatever is at your disposal.

In theory you are supposed to apply the least harmful method, but intensiver Notwehrexzess is still an aquittal.
The problem in German law would just be time. Only the immediate attack gives you free reign, no judge would well...judge you for excessive force in a heated skirmish, much less as a minor.
The only exception is when the person attacking you is a child, insane or was provoked to attack by you. You are then supposed to follow a three step model of flight, defence and offence as defence (Flucht, Schutz, Trutz). Kyle did all three he would be fine. Juvi for posession and criminal record wiped afterwards.

Open carry is 100% legal. Up until Wisconsin had concealed carry, some jurisdictions would try to throw a brandishing charge at you if you actually did it, but they cleared the law up when they passed concealed carry. You're only gonna catch a charge for brandishing if you wave it around or point it at someone now.

I was worried all day long about the jury's decision, I expected to come home to KF either celebrating Kyle's freedom or mourning the death of Justitia.
If I had come to find Kyle deemed guilty by the jury, I would not have been able to stomach the video of him suffering through that travesty of justice.

I am so goddamned worried about this poor kid. Is this long waiting time for the jury normal, does this bode ill or well? I assume no one knows that last one, could be 11 maniacs shouting down at the one sane person that refuses to send Kyle to jail for fighting off a pedo, a granny-beater and a burglar that wanted to kill him.
