Extremely colorful field uniforms like those of the the 18th-19th century are more or less dead because they just make you giant targets in an age of generally accurate weapons.

Camouflage is not nearly as important as intimidation.

Oh I misunderstood the post then. It's hard to say when that would be a reality but it may come eventually and would definitely be a paradigm shift. The era of hyper effective optics technology, drone swarms and combat robots will be a strange era for camouflage as a whole. It could also put an end to the cat and mouse game as it currently is where when one advance in optics is made, those making military clothing or gear have to develop countermeasures for it.

As of 2023 both the USA and Russia are trying to figure out ways to counter thermal imaging. The Russians have an exoskeleton suit in mind while the Americans are focusing on camouflage. Everything is somewhat in early stages of course but the developments are interesting nonetheless.

No physicist but I doubt thats ever happening without discovering new physical laws or properties of the universe.

You cant "cloak" something akin to what you see in popular scifi like romulans in star trek. Youre always giving off some form of radiation be it thermal, visible, radio etc. that someone can see. If you somehow put yourself in a suit that captured all your radiation, you would quickly fry yourself due to the heat(really no different than an astronaut in a spacesuit, which requires a big bulky cooling system)

Secondly theres the whole every action has an opposite and equal reaction. You want to propel a large object like a vehicle or tank that requires work and work generates heat which goes back to the first problem. So assuming you have your tank obscured from view, all that dust its kicking up or debris its displacing is still gonna be obviously visible.

My personal favorite modern dress uniforms are British. They keep it classy, but traditional. Sailor uniforms seem to be more of a hit with the ladies, or so I’ve heard.

Here are some interesting outfits worn by American far-right groups that like to do marches and rallies in the public. They generally all wear balaclavas and sometimes sunglasses to prevent identification which makes some practical sense but the whole aesthetic they evoke as a whole are something else to say the least. Balaclavas, khakis, t-shirts, boots, and long sleeve shirts abound.

I never understood why in Titanfall pilots wear completely different uniforms, BDUs, kits and helmets. Especially for the male and female versions of the same class. There’s barely any uniformity besides Militia being green and orange and IMC being grey and white. It not only seems bizarre from a lore standpoint but just like a lot of extra work for the devs to make completely different models. At least Titanfall 2 negated that with the few classes looking the same when male or female and having specific kits for each class’ role, but it’s impossible to tell who’s IMC or Militia without the red light and name above them. The grunts look absolutely kickass in both games, though.
