Yes, until you learn to read, every book or letter's text looks like gibberish. It makes brewing up herbal potions a tad tricky when you can't follow the recipe book. You also can't understand what foreigners are saying until you learn their languages – no subtitles for it.

That... actually sounds pretty neat. It wasn't uncommon for those who could read and write to be paid for their services by the multitudes who couldn't. Learning to read and write were a big deal back then. We tend to take basic literacy for granted these days. At least in the western world. The language gap is also an interesting addition.
