King of the hill appreciation thread - Yup.

The reason this new show feels odd, me thinks (aside from the quality of the writing), is that the target audience is different.

The people who originally watched that show are now in their 40s or early 50s, and they aren't the main target of most productions now. The desired target is millennials and zoomers, so you need to still pander to them and their preferences. Zoomers aren't interested, but millennials who watched the reruns might, despite the world in which this show happens is totally foreign for them.

Disney went through the same with X-men 97. It went from a Saturday morning cartoons to deal with more adult themes and more explicit because the showrunner implied the target were the people who watched this in the 90s when they were kids, people who now can deal with different situations than in the 90s. He also explicitly didn't want to include the new changes of characters being gay or more diverse.

I'm not gonna say "woke is dead" because is not, but if we take xmen and Cobra Kai as examples, at least TV producers are realising that the og consumers of their reboots don't want extreme changes not to see their characters being subjected to humiliation rituals. In fact CK and KotH are making some criticism towards the insanity that is wokeness (XM not so much) without being preachy or disrespectful, which ain't much but it's still a step.

Chris Jai Alex is credited for voicing that character in the end credits. Phil LaMarr didn't work on the new season afaik.
That's good.
Phil LaMarr is extremely talented, but he's a hypocrite for whinging about raceblind casting when he as a non-Jamaican has voiced a stereotypical/inverted-stereotypical Jamaican for years.
Both race, class and culture can make someone 'the other' and lead to mockery without empathy. Toby Huss's Kahn never belittled Laotians or S.E. Asians. Kahn is a striver from an immigrant/transplant background, make him and Minh Argentine and 95% of the character would be the same, make him a snooty Anglo Californian transferred to Texas by work and he'll still be 90% the same. Maybe the Lama episode wouldn't work, but isn't that more of a Mongolian/Tibetan thing anyway.
but a revival for King of the Hill has to exist for a broader reason.
Not really, it brought a smile to millions of peoples faces, who cares if it isn't as good as the best of the originals.
The timeskip opens up new stories that wouldn't have worked in the old series.
I can see Connie getting suckered into sjw bullshit like poly relationships but isn't Chang a stereotypical alpha male jock type?
I can't imagine he's the kind of dude to be ok with someone else piping his girl.
Connie is just a regular hookup he shows his parents. Take this scene from the anniversary.
Connie: "You're ditching me now!"
Chane: "You know the rules of ERM, we don't need to burden each other with our problems, I thought that's what we loved about this arrangement"
Connie: "So you pretend to be a real boyfriend when you want to impress your parents, but now that I need your supp..."
Chane: "HEY! stop forcing me to feel your feelings, this isn't consensual, and I don't feel safe."
**Connie storms off**
Chane: "Look!!! we can still meet up later to have sex if you want, I feel that for you"

As awful as Family Guy is, I’ll always give them credit for what they did when they were forced to change Cleveland’s voice: Instead of going with a big name, they found the most accurate black Cleveland impressionist on YT and hired him instead, you barely can tell there’s a difference.
Don't really watch family guy, but it's nice a childhood fan got the job instead of a flavour-of-the-week celeb who ticks the right racial box.

Seems like this is a popular misconception going around because Chris Jai Alex is credited for voicing that character in the end credits. Phil LaMarr didn't work on the new season afaik.
Really? That's incredibly surprising, the character sounds almost exactly like LaMarr doing his Samurai Jack voice. Shit, I thought they casted him because of that like some tongue-in-cheek way to even further the point that you don't have to be an ethnicity to appreciate something from a culture.

Edit: also surprising considering LaMarr was a regular on the original run to begin with.

Dale's voice is beyond awful.

Not a prude but they really are leaning on the "dude, sex. Lmao" in this new season. Is it just what millennial writers are obsessed with?
On one hand, Bobby is in his 20s, and that's part of the experience at that age. On the other hand, you need 0 sex references to be funny. I agree, it makes me uneasy, unless it serves to move the plot forward. Nancy and John was funny because it was only heavily implied. Bobby butt dialing his mom was kind of a lame joke.

I normally get up to refill my water or get more snacks when that kind of garbage is on the screen

Yeah really not a fan of the new episodes at all, surface level issues like the animation taking a backseat aside. All of the characters are weak and tepid versions of themselves and none of the jokes really flow, I appreciate them not going ‘wow new technology’ every couple of seconds like a lot of new animated reboots do but there’s very little substance to this new version of the show, even ignoring the new audience it’s going for the C- attitude that reboots seem to have in approach to comedy and overall enthusiasm is so frustrating. I really hope the latest batch of new B&B episodes are better than this pale imitation.

Caught this quote from Saladin Patterson in an interview:
I do want to address the art because that’s probably been the most universal thing that has shook the new audience when they saw the previews and things like that — that the animation looks so different. I get it, and I get why people who want to revisit the show may be taken aback a little bit. The new animation style is all digital now, but the truth of the matter is, it is impossible to do the show now the way it was done then. The hand-drawn animation, the water colors, those don’t exist anymore. If they exist, they certainly don’t exist at a cost where you can do a TV show. So it has to be updated, and so we updated it with the current style and makeup of animation that animated shows do. I admit it does look different and maybe jarring to some people. I just want to put out there that even though it’s updated, we still went and tried to give it an age old look, to make it feel more like the color palette and the landscape of the original, more so than other shows. We certainly went through a lot of back and forth with the background designers and things like that, to make our colors feel closer to what they felt in the original and the tones and things the most that we could.
Pretty much what I assumed ie "yes the animation sucks we know it sucks we did the best we could with the only shitty option available to us".

The manosphere episode, alot of have already been said about it that I won't bother to go back over but two part that really stuck out to me:

1) GH talking about being friend zoned from the girl he likes, saying how they talk alot late in the night blah blah. Hank gave his "well she's just a really good friend". Hank "I respect women" Hill isn't that out of character but I can't really think of any actual female friends that Hank has to say such a thing. More in character would have been telling GH to man up and ask her out or move on.

2) After Hank's speech where everyone literally stood up (but didn't clap). All the other guys at the seminar getting up and leaving. Fine. But the friend of Not Andrew Tate doing that, the same one who started the business with him? Thats more scummy then Not Andrew Tate. Imagine having a friend and business partner that suddenly ditches you after a single speech. He's not a hero who saw the light, he's a opportunist shitbag.

I know, I'm giving it more thought then the writers and viewers are suppose to give but it was just something that stood out to me.

To be fair that's pretty accurate to Manosphere grifters. Just look at how quick Fuentes is to betray his own base whenever it's convenient.

It wasn't too bad of an episode. We know Hank is reluctant around women, definitely compared to his late father's womanizing ways. Hank face to face with the manosphere Tate grifter tells me either he mellowed out with how women should be treated or again, society has changed from what Hank is used to since he went to Saudi Arabia.

whatever you think of Tate or Critical Drinker or whatever, they exist (although much less than the volume they are talked about by their opponents) because the basic problem they talk about exists. The meme that there has been no leftward shift in culture and media and men just started complaining for no reason is gaslighting plain and simple.

if they're going in the direction of 'this is a dark age of the far right and hank is a rare 'good conservative' cryptosjw from a more civilized time who is going to call out the far right now like he used to call out the left' even though I don't recall the original show ever being as full throated in its criticism of the left. The 'criticism' of the left in the original show mostly being portrayed as a humorous no deep message culture clash. I don't think I'm interested. I guess its fitting hes been retconned to worship Shrub II.

Both are in character for Hank, but I think the latter didn't happen because the writer was a woman and she doesn't know this is how normal men (like Hank) would talk. Men need to read a woman's mind to know if she's ok with you asking her out before actually asking her out, otherwise they're too pushy. That's how many modern women tend to think about the subject.

To be fair, he probably didn't have any idea his friend's business was launched off the back of his mother. It's one thing when your best friend is kind of an asshole, it's another when he's not practicing a thing he preaches. But I agree, that whole segment was fucking stupid regardless. It felt like something you'd see as the resolution to an episode of a shitty children's cartoon where the main characters pants the bully and the bully curls up crying like a baby.

Just hit the Khan divorce episode, and the recasting was abysmal. At least you can justify Dale sounding like shit as it was the late Johnny Hardwick in his final days. The episode was also mid by the reboots standards, but having to hear Ronny Chieng phone it in the whole time makes leaves the same bad taste in my mouth that the first one does.
