King of the hill appreciation thread - Yup.

Oh wow, I got the date wrong. Not only did this release 10 days ago already, but they dropped all episodes at once? What's the general consensus? Skimming through the thread I got the feeling that it's not quite "there", and from the few snippets I watched on YT the show seems like a skinwalker. Peggy and Bobby's voices in particular I'm 90% sure were just -5% pitchshifted.

The Kahn and Mihn episode kind of pissed me off mostly due to how they treated Hank and Peggy in it. They actually chilled out a lot during the show so having them go back to season 1 levels of condescending assholes while ignoring all the character development they had comes off really shit to me.
Hank was by far the most active at reaching out to Kahn, so it doesn't surprise me he's regressed, especially since he's got so much humiliation to project on to others. LIke everyone else, I hate his new voice acting and assume that's why he was only in one episode.
Is the general consensus just to watch all of the original series and ignore those new episodes?
It's as good as ever, the 1st episode is the weakest due to all the exposition, but it's still great.

The original VA for Hank's neighbour Dale was dying so sounds noticably different to the new VA who does a great impression of the actor in his prime. They recast a few of the now grown up kids and gave Ted Wassanasong a dedicated actor. Bobby and Peggy have their original actresses though maybe you're right about pitchshifting Bobby to come as more mature. I've already mentioned Kahn's new VA sucks, but if the performance of a secondary character in just one episode is the worst thing about the revival then it is great overall.

The new episodes are fine, but watch the old episodes first.

I haven't watched those shows in years. Except for South Park, and to be honest, I don't remember anything about the last three or four seasons. I should probably stop watching it.
Now is the perfect time to quit watching South Park. The new season has been unwatchable garbage so far.

Opinions on YouTube channels that make King of the Hill videos?

AlphaJay I used to watch a bit of, but fell off awhile ago. Nothing terrible, he just started boring me.

Squirrel Tactics I subbed awhile ago but only recently started watching, he's awesome.

Shady Doorags is the fucking man, though, love him. That he gave Squirrel Tactics a little shoutout in one of his recent videos was pretty cool. I tell you what man, it's like a dang ol real recognizing real there, man.

haven't caught the reboot yet, but I did see a clip of Hank saving the now teenage G.H and an entire Manosphere class out of the Andrew Tate cultist mentality, this makes sense given Cotton died when GH was a baby and he really didn't seem to grow up with a father figure, forcing Hank to become a voice of reason for him

I finally got around to starting the reboot and holy shit is the first episode awful. The rest of the season is an extremely mixed bag so far (I'm only on episode 4) but they basically faceplanted out of the gate. Dale's voice also is particularly awful in that episode compared to the rest as well.

Última edición:
You know what I found really funny about the whole "characters can only being voiced by VAs of the same race" thing? Besides casting Khan as an Asian guy who isn't even Laotian (still hilarious), there's episode three:
Bobby has to find an authentic Japanese charcoal supplier and his only option is this ultra-protective Japanese guy who will only sell to other genuine Japanese businesses.
The bit? He's black. Raised in Japan sure, but racially black.

It's kinda funny on it's own but I feel like they could have done more with this and actually made some sharper commentary.
Anyways, you wanna know who voices him? Phil LaMarr. Famous for voice acting Samurai Jack, a Japanese character voiced by a black guy :story:

The sheer absurdity of it all is killing me.
They really showed Phil by giving him another credit and paycheck.

Yeah, people in this thread are WAY too kind to this reboot. Its a very mixed bag with lots of lows and only some highs.

Due to how spectacularly shit most reboots and regular adult television has been for the last few years and the KOTH reboot not being especially terrible, it screams to me of getting muddy water while trapped in the desert. You don't notice the taste of mud when your dying of thirst.

It doesn't seem that bad at first but a 50/50 good bad episode ratio is quite low for a Mike Judge production.

The Beavis and Butthead reboot for example being much more consistent in quality.

Squirrel Tactics is great. Haven't seen the other ones but I'll check them out.

I agree. Some of the comments in this thread made me wonder if we were actually watching the same show. This reboot is on par with the weaker episodes on the final couple seasons of the original run when the budgets were cut and most of the episodes were generic slice of life episodes where nothing interesting was going on. I get that the bar gets lower and lower with each year but saying it’s as good as ever is just wrong.

honestly; compared to seasons 12 and 13, with the exceptions of some episodes, those seasons suffered from Hank and friends going on some wacky shenanigan-laden adventure where a goofy b-plot gets forced onto them cause the writers had to use the characters for some reason

aside from the flaws that others have listed here, Season 14 is a good step in the right direction, and the moments you see with Hank and Bobby are genuinely nice to see expanded upon in this season

That boy may not be right, but Hank sure raised him right. Anyone would be proud to have Hank as their father, and Bobby as a friend.

The new season may have some issues, but considering how many shows have dysfunctional families, it's nice seeing one where no matter their tastes or differences, they still genuinely care for each other. It's one of the reasons why I loved the original series and I'm glad that time, literally, hasn't changed that.

That episode perfectly details how some parents refuse to discipline their children. Adults cannot do anything about others' children because it'd be child abuse.

The issue is there is no reason to revive a show that has been off the air for nearly twenty years just for it to be "okay" at best. All these revivals being put now and days are just soulless cash grabs by a creatively dead industry trying to further milk household name franchises that have already been milked dry.

That is the point that a lot of people in this thread trying to make. The new season wasn't as bad as it could have been, but a revival for King of the Hill has to exist for a broader reason.

the reason is a creativally dead industry yes

also I am agreeing that when it hits it hits about as good as the episodes of the last 3 seasons, none of them are really as good as the golden age of the first few seasons when Judge was still actively involved in the creative process.

But did I laugh at a lot of the jokes? HO YEAH

Would I recommend you watch it if you want more? Not really a Gribble of an idea, more like a Dautrieve when he's actually a functional human being.

Wish they would have explored the black guy who moved into the neighborhood more and I liked Willow a lot. Bobby deserves a Willow a lot more than he deserves a Kahn Jr; they even go into a lot of the meta stuff in the last episode, focusing on "do we really want to base everything on the stuff we liked when we" (Bobby and Kahn Jr) "were 12?" I can't feel but hope that was a set up for a possible next season exploring more characters. There was one episode when Buck Strickland came back, and he's on his fourth or fifth heart. I hope Trump didn't send Octavio back!
