Interesting video, but Digital Foundry's video on Cryengine's ray tracing was more clear about its shortcomings. Take that with a grain of salt, obviously.
The logical solution would be to support both methods. After all, it was a common practice for games from 20 years ago to offer different shader model paths. This is the reason why games could run on a vast range of hardware without having to regress in render pixel counts. Today, the notion of a low spec mode usually amounts to nothing more than a low sample count across the board, making everything look ugly rather than just different.
 
How big are we talking?
He's not arrogant, but he does suffer from excessive pride. I believe he started out by creating mapping tutorials that were deemed terrible by the community which he staunchly defended, and when that got stale, he moved on to the next big thing to act as an expert on.
To be fair, he's a lot more knowledgeable now than he used to be.
