Also, what difference could a criminal defense lawyer have made? Criminal defense comes in three forms: "My client didn't do it", "My client was justified in doing it" and "My client is remorseful and regretted doing it". Every defense is a variation of those three.

Let me give an example for each: "My client has a tight alibi", "My client was defending himself against an attacker" and "My client was never the same after the accident and has not touched a bottle since".

None of these defenses would work for Smally: He filmed himself committing the crimes so there is no doubt of his guilt, there is no scenario short of a gun on the head to justify these actions and he has faked remorse countless times. No lawyer can save his ass even in the best case scenario. He is at the mercy of the judge now.

No one is saying it is better to have a civil law lawyer on criminal defense. I am saying that this case is like sending one normal human to fight Godzilla in hand-to-hand combat. Sending a professional boxer is technically better but it will make no difference over sending an accountant. Both of them would fail anyway.

He got a public defender to bother. Also, it is Hank's families' money. It is worth mentioning that he probably just realized the amount of shit he is in. For the longest time, he thought this whole thing was just a joke and he would get off easily. His public defender fed him false information by accident due to not knowing how big a mess he had made. Poor dude was panicking as it dawned on him that Smally did everything he should not have done and more. The new lawyer has inherited the mistakes.

I think had it not been for johnnys constant doubling down, antagonism, and bragging about anything ever, he MIGHT of had a chance, but hes really just pissed on any extended olive branch.

Its like if how logan paul got shit for recording in the suicide forest, but instead apologizing, he said "fuck you japan you should get nuked again, heil hitler" instead of his "severe lapse of judgement" video. People can be pretty damn forgiving with remorse (even if consistently faked), and money can help sway shit, but eventually PR gets so fucking bad, anyone wanting to support you gets damaged by it. Its why I'm skeptical of people saying he will walk,especially with so many guilty pleas already. its not that I think the system is wonderful or trustworthy, but because if he walked free, it would reflect HORRIFICALLY on literally anyone responsible.
