Bradley Cooper is executive producer on Joker and he’s got a great deal of pull at Warner— especially after delivering them A Star Is Born last year. My guess is Phillips lobbied for the project and Cooper’s involvement sold them on it. Phillips does have this as his first effort, so maybe not so surprising that he’d want to return to grungier subjects.

A low budget, punk rock documentary right out of film school.* GG was fueled by a lot of nostalgia for the past glory of late 1970’s punk rock NYC that had died out. Maybe that’s one reason Phillips fixated on the era for the movie.

I’d say you’re correct about Cooper helping and the fact Philip’s comedies have made big bank for studios. Cooper is surely grateful for what The Hangover did for his career so I could see him backing Philips as a producer on this.

Philips has leverage and has delivered lots of bankable films. He might have promised them Hangover 5 and an Old School sequel to get a bite at the “grim dark comic book movie” apple or maybe Warner Brothers was just anxious to keep him happy.

After Memento I thought Nolan was a brilliant choice for the Batman franchise - just like Tim Burton was a inspired choice for the 1980’s series. Their past body of work showed they would bring something unique and interesting to the table. I get none of that from Philips work, even if you throw in his GG Allin doc.

Maybe part of the issue was Philips felt insecure or a bit out of his depth taking on a dark action flick after a career of comedy. maybe he felt safer trying to model it on established great films by Scorsese instead of charting new waters.

I was going to say a lot more about this but changed my mind. I will say Johnny Puke was my cousin’s good friend in High School. (GG died at Puke’s NYC apt) I know more about GG Allin than I care to admit but found him a depressing last gasp for punk rock. Oddly I can understand how a young film student who liked GG’s schtick would go on to do Old School and The Hangover type films.

Also I cannot believe a fourth remake of A Star is Born was a hit for Cooper. I guess self indulgent, sentimental star vehicles will always have a place in Hollywood. I have not seen Cooper’s version so idk how good or bad it is and don’t really care to find out.

Memes aside, J*ker captured the nihilism of contemporary American society and how a primal mind free from attachment would be compelled to respond to it. A swarm of bureaucrats, uncivil masses, filth and rot everywhere. How can he be a good boy? But what this kino does that is so challenging is that it makes the doomed future into a fictional past. It already happened and we lived past it. His Gotham becomes a timeless Gothic, a menacing unknown despite its outward motifs that allow us to identify it. The specter of a rancid 80s urban decay, populated by even more disgusting denizens, revolted against by an anti-villain.

Arthur admits he has no politics, and his actions induce in him a state of elated joy, smiling and dancing despite the carnage, followed by a kind of emptiness or state of zen, where he no longer suffers nor experiences pleasure. He engages in pure action, like Arjuna, the kshatriya charioteer of the Bhagavad Gita, called to war against his own kin and fulfilling the destiny he is tasked with.

Certain blockheaded rightists denounce this kino as leftist for a variety of tropes which occur. First there is Arthur's sacred bride, his spiritual waifu. She is m*latto, but as a wise man once said, such women were made for copulation. Then there is the anarchism and anti-wealth theme. But those who have grown fat on such a wicked system should not be guarded by a right which claims to be in opposition to that system. Are we to defend the Waynes? Does Thomas really plan to save Gotham if he has maneuvered to throw his mistresses into insane asylums for risking to expose him as just another vulgar pedestrian?

Finally, J*ker goes after media and medium. Are Murray's jokes any funny? Or are they just delivered by a man with a contract and an applause sign? When they are juxtaposed with Arthur's, several times, is there really any difference? Or is the context what drives the distinction? What you see is not real, it is made real. Now yuo see.
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Joker.

One of my friends just got back from seeing it. He said that the scene where Arthur meets Thomas Wayne and is crying "Dad, it's me!" while choking and laughing before getting punched in the face really hit him hard emotionally since he himself never had a father in his life. I remember that scene sticking out to me as well. Joaquin managed to break my heart so many times during this film.

For me, it's when he was watching Murray Franklin show his stand up and proceeded to ridicule him on TV. Really hurt as he was imagining him to be the father figure he never had growing up, only for him to shit on him doing what he wanted to do the most.

Looks like the new spin’s out now that the whole “it’ll cause shootings” thing didn’t really pan out: Now it directly funds a pedophile! These three articles were all posted within the last few hours, and I’d expect more soon.

What if there was a mass shooting as CNN and the other media outlets obviously hoped for but they found the shooter's manifesto and it was a 200-page Captain Marvel fanfic.

Oh now America cares about what Gary Glitter did!

Piss off Cuck journalism.

Semi justified? He put his rotten disgusting fingers in his son's mouth.
He was to much of a jerk about his crazy mom stuff (that was Semi-Justified though) but yeah he put his gross hands in his kids mouth. F that guy

From what you're describing the movie sounds an awful lot like the King of Comedy

The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver are built into this films DNA

Then explain it. You said people, specifically here, would complain about Herzog not keeping up with Kinski and suggest Rian Johnson(‽) as a replacement. My comment that you were responding to simply said that Phoenix’s talent isn’t matched by Phillip’s. That’s it.

X relates to Y in a similar way that A relates to B

The incel angle is a lie. All Arthur wants is someone he can connect to, someone who is honest with him. If you notice, no one in the movie is ever honest with Arthur. Not his mother, not his boss, not his co-workers, not Murray, not his therapist. He makes up the relationship with the single mother in his mind because its literally the only thing keeping him sane. He doesn't hate her for it. He knows its not real. He tries to connect with her in the real world, but it obviously doesn't work. With this last connection shattered, he loses all grasp on society. There's literally nothing and no place for him anymore. So he embraces the Joker's trademark Chaos. There's nothing but madness, the screeching of the crowd. He stands for nothing and no one, an agent of pure Chaos.

How much of this is in his mind is up for interpretation. But I think most of it is real. Excepting the relationship and him being lifted of the car as a messiah.
::TO ME:: I see the decline of Gotham and the decline of Arthur as the same thing. The people in Gotham awaken to the madness that is at the soul of gotham just waiting to wake up. And as Arthur wakes up and embraces his madness.....freeing himself of the attempt to be normal thats killing him.....He embodies that moment of Chaos, Anger, and Madness. He comes out of that police car all Christ Like because he achieves apotheosis fully in that moment. His acceptance, love of the spotlight, and seeing he isn't alone. Thats the moment when he fully crosses into supervillian status.

This movie actually made me wonder if everytime we see Thomas Wayne in any other movie is what Bruce thinks his father was like...and that Joker shows that the real man was an absolute awful person that looked down on others...I know its most likely just something from this movie and thats it but it did made me wonder if a lot of the people our heroes look up to werent shitstains and they were far too young to be able to tell (like Uncle Ben was rather an abusive dick that Peter was far too young to tell or perhaps his death traumatized him so badly that he cant see Uncle Ben may not have been such a nice guy to begin with).

I think a Non-Cuck writer of Batman could do something interesting with this idea. Thomas Wayne is a "good man" but Bruce has because of the idealized memory of him become a "Better Man"

Última edición:
The movie was good tbh, even if it felt like the ghost of Taxi Driver was hanging over it.

My favorite scenes was the subway scene where the light flickers on and off while the 3 yuppies get up to beat his ass and Randall's death, fucking perfect use of bathos in the aftermath of his death.

And let me take a special note to sperg about the guy who decided to use Cream in the rioting scene. My God, White Room was just the right amount of apocalyptic for the sequence. Pretty ominous how Ginger Baker popped off just days after it's release, though...

And don't worry, my American friends, the SJW's are triggered over in Asia too as far as my area is concerned.

Yeah, exactly. And as I said above, I think this uncomfortable truth has a LOT of people projecting on this movie, way more than normal. Because you see all these people bitching about conditions they clearly don't have, and Arthur is clearly mentally ill. People who actually have these conditions will nod and be able to see through these pretenders. I mean, Arthur knew he was at the brink. He knew he was struggling with his mental health. But nobody gives a shit. They're callous and disgusted towards him. The therapist even makes it about her when he's about to get cut off. She can go into private practice. He has no options. He can't afford therapy or anti-psychotics.

It shows the effects and isolation of mental illness. It is a cautionary tail. I think Joker is a character study, but its also a judgement on a callous society. As I've stated before, I think this is where the media anger comes in. The movie is making a judgement call on them. On how they crow on and on about the plight of the poor, mentally ill, but they really don't care. Its all for appearances and when it comes down to it, they're on they're own. The problem is the movie basically rips this right open and is not subtle at all.

Arthur would have been. He's not a monster at the beginning and that's the whole point. He's a damaged person in frankly, the real world. People are calling it 'terrifying' because its real. It reflects the callousness of society. Ironically, by calling it scary and wanting it to be banned, people want to embrace their own callousness. They don't want to have compassion. They don't want to have empathy. I'll quote Morgan Freeman in Se7en:

To :🇲🇪: Arthur was as disturbed as Patrick Bateman at the end of American Psycho. He just hadnt completed a full transformation yet

And [Like a real mentally ill person] Arthur wants to kill himself so he stops hurting people.....until he finally transforms

While the primary themes of the movie are clearly social alienation and mental health awareness, I realize now why the woke critics hate this movie so much. It shines a very ugly mirror on their "revolution". The clown protestors could be indistinguishable from occupy wall street or the more recent extinction resistance tards in Europe. All of whom rage, sometimes even violently, against the rich corporate fat cats who they blame for all our worlds issues. Yet all of them are held up as some sort of vanguard of the revolution by the activists (I am sorry, journalists) as something great.

But when the "revolution" finally comes, it doesn't usher in the woke utopia, its instead spearheaded by an insane white male loner who launches a nihilistic riot that serves no overarching purpose but too destroy. And they hate it so much because they know somewhere deep down behind all the lies and delusions they have built up around themselves that if the revolution comes this is the most likely form it would take.

And oh boy do they hate that thought. Good to note the "revolution" begins with Joker blowing out the brains of a major Media personality. That is VERY on the nose for these people because they also stupidly assume that if their desired revolution comes it won't be THEM staring down the barrel, it will be other people. Something that still surprises me about the "fight the system" crowds is that their idea of Revolution is purely academic right up until the moment someone drives an ice pic into their skull.

In Flashpoint Paradox there's an alternate timeline where Bruce was killed and his father Thomas becomes Batman (and an alcoholic) and his mother becomes the Joker.

Yeah but thats a bad fan fic story

I am talking like Bruce deals with like a classic Holmesian detective story, which forces him to confront who his father WAS
He deals with the fact Alfred hid facts of who Thomas Wayne was. That he was a good and flawed man [Alfred says a man who would be proud of how much better of a man his son has become]
Bruce also realizes his father wasn't as good a father as he was with Dick, Tim, Damien, etc
Bruce gets to the root of the mystery and resolves his relationship with his dead father and reaffirms his quest for Justice

One of the first scenes is our white honest protagonist getting robbed and beaten by a gang of young POC, its obvious this movie was gonna get hated from the get go by the woke crowd.
They do, however, ignore that the movie shows both whites and POCs being pieces of shit to the main character. But then again, all the asshole whites are rich elites mostly (with minor exceptions) and the only out right good black character was mostly imagined by Arthur....
I think this movie is trying to say something leftisf REALLY dont want to confront ( ironically proving it right).

SJWs dont want to believe that the people they insult, judge and ''cancel" are still living beings deserving of basic human dignity...if a white non-elite person was robbed and killed by a POC, nobody cares, the moment the white person literally shots back, everyone loses their shit. What matters is the message, or rather as Ledgers's say "their plan" , their plan is to shame us into oblivion as black youth steals and beats us down while we are told reacting and fighting back is morally wrong (by the standards set by the elites, oddly enough). This movie shows how fucking bullshit that all is, all coming from a frustrated comedy director that cant make a fucking joke anymore without trying to be cancelled by some dickless liberal, so if he has to trigger everyone, makes sure that its by telling thd biggest joke there is, which is society, and these people are the punch line.

This movie isnt saying for you to make a violent uprising, simply telling you a tragedic joke that speaks to our reality closer than you think...

100% or as the Nolan films said

"some men just want to watch the world burn."

Thomas Wayne is the representation of "Good" neoliberal leadership

and he gets killed by the Clown Anarchists for petty reasons

oh yeah shift those goalposts

I just saw Joker and decided to go back and see what all the smart folks here in KF had to say about it in this thread. Some of you are obviously wizards.

It's definitely a new look for the Joker, which I like. Honestly, the casting of Phoenix I think is pretty solid. I'm wondering if it will pull stuff from The Killing Joke.
You don't have to wonder anymore, you called it. The Killing Joke was a huge influence.

Great trailer,Joaquin seems having nailed the role and the movie looks like a breath of fresh air in the comic book movie scene.

Hope the movie get that late '70s/early 80's dirty and gritty atmosphere you can see in the trailer for good

If you have seen the movie, I think your desires have been met.

I can't wait for the backlash. All the cuck males are gonna be soooo triggered.

This looks legit good. Should be one to watch.

Yep, the triggering was real. Your crystal ball is in perfect working condition.

I hope it's a nice self-contained story, and nothing in it looks like a video game cut scene. Just sell me one good story today, not a rushed prequel to set up even more stories many years from now.

Hope you are right. I didn't detect that Joker is a set-up for any further spin-offs.

I like Joaquin a lot, so at the very least I think he'll give this role his all. He seemed reasonably excited about it.

Joachim acted the fuck out of this.

The Joker left me with an unsettled feeling, which is great. I was torn between empathy for the characters' horrific story of childhood abuse and total repugnance for his greasy, soul-less empty existence. The movie also gave me a few grimdark comedic opportunities to let off nervous laughter, which helped relieve some of the tension. Just the fact that a comic book movie gave me "feels" at all was a breathe of fresh air.

Hopefully this true boomer newfag got the multi-quote function right. If not, fuck it and GET OFF MY LAWN.
