It might have changed the outcome but damn, I'd feel bad for that poor girl. Being with him would be terrible for her mental health, he'd just drag her down unless she was severely mentally ill or a drug addict. Even then he might wind up hurting her because of his hallucinations.

Batman and the joker being half siblings does sound pretty exceptional though.

It's not a new concept, it just hasn't been used due to it being entirely universe ruining.

Joker being a Wayne essentially means that the Waynes basically control the entire power balance in Gotham between him and Batman. It also makes Batman's actions kinda worthless because instead of having a creed of not killing, it's just him looking like he's being soft on his brother. Joker also being a Wayne also would play a part in why he kept escaping because he had the Wayne's genetic predetermination for ingenuity. Basically it entirely negates Batman and the natural end for it would be it to play out in a court room which would make for a terrible comic book.

Basically it's the midochlorines of Star Wars, where it doesn't need explaining but in the process you ruin what's been established by trying to explain every little detail.

This would also make The Joker Terry's uncle and even though Terry being Bruce's son was kind of like shoehorned in because nobody could properly explain how Bruce succeeded in using gene therapy on someone's testicles to produce clones of his own sperm.

Saw this movie today, It disturbs me how little parents don't look into a movie they are going to watch and take their kids with them.
On the other, what else would they expect? Joker is best known to be that way.

Those part in the beginning where he laughs in a bus was painfull to watch, and it's perfect in how it was shot.

Just saw it. Definitely did not disappoint. I appreciated the subtle tells of Arthur's delusions and reality throughout the movie. Midget scene was the highlight though.

that part was the scariest, because I really liked Gary. Locked in a room with a psychopath and all you're thinking through your panic is "DAMN MY TINY ARMS"

Joaquin Phoenix really knocked it out of the park for me. The entire time he was on screen I just felt uncomfortable and felt second-hand embarrassment on his character's behalf.

And he was emaciated as fuck. Kinda hope after shooting was finished he had himself a nice hearty dinner. He deserved it.

Just came back from the movie myself, after avoiding this thread for the whole weekend, and I gotta say, the movie was excellent. It was a hard, unflinching look into a man with serious mental problems that had nothing in the way of aid and suffered from a lifetime of ridicule.

What makes the movie so compelling is that while it's not hard to sympathize with Arthur for his unfortunate luck, his mental problems make us instinctively cautious of him. He is clearly not well, and the movie does not sugarcoat that. I especially loved that twist where it's revealed Arthur never dated that girl at all. It was all a delusion brought on from his psychosis. My biggest problem with media nowadays is that everyone tends to do that wishy-washy "spread awareness of mental illness" while not actually portraying how fucking crippling mental illness is in reality. Joker is probably one of the more accurate portrayals of mental illness I've seen in a mainstream movie in a long time.

People complaining about the stupid-ass "incels and alt-right" shit are also missing the wider themes of class war, which is the heart of the movie as well. And it's bizarre because most leftists I know are obsessed with class, and yet it's right there front and center in Joker, but most woke outlets are barely even discussing it. Probably because they're more obsessed with moral outrage than intellectual themes that would appeal to them.

I also can't wait for the movie to come out on DVD; there was a lot of writing in the movie that was only there for a split-second, and I feel as though there is a lot more detail packed into the writing that's begging to be paused on home releases.

I didn’t care for the director trying so hard to imitate King of Comedy and Taxi Driver. Did the joker have to be Rupert Pumpkin? Actually having DeNiro step into the old Jerry Lewis role to hammer the obvious home was terrible.

To be clear The King of Comedy is one of my all time favorite movies but between the constant recycling comic book characters and ripping off Scorsese’s OC’s, it seemed pretty stale and calculated.

Phoenix put in a great performance but the director and script were disappointing.

If (when) this timeline gets a sequel, I wonder how they're gonna pull it off considering Joker is already 30-40 when Bruce is like 8 which would make him nearly a senior by the time Bruce is old enough to take revenge.

I think that is one reason why this movie should be a standalone feature. Both Joker and Burton's Batman established the character as being older than Bruce when the latter dons the cowl while other versions (both live action and animated) don't explicitly give Joker's age. That way people can presume he is either the same age or slightly older/younger than Batman.

The more I think about it, I wonder if Joker did actually murder his mother. What the odds nobody would walk into the hospital room and see what was happening? Then again if he did do it, that'll could add credence to the cops wanting to question him. The mom is found dead with signs of being smothered and going to the apartment, they discover the dead coworker.

I always assumed the Joker was in his 40's or 50's and that his appearance and the chemicals have just allowed him to remain very spry and indeterminate when it comes to physical aging. He's said, for example, that he was old enough to be Harley's father. The Batman timeline has always been squirrely though so I mostly shrug whenever we're supposed to guess how old the characters are when they start. I figured Arthur in this movie was in his 30's and is just super craggly-looking from living a harsh life. Characters talk to him as if he's still a young adult.

Just got out of the movie, and I have to say, if this doesn't win Phoenix an oscar, then film as a medium is truly dead. His performance was tense, and made you feel (for me it was depressing, as it seems like his situation was fucked from the start).

Todd Philips' use of color in the film is also genius, as Arthur's insane parts are vibrant, even down to his clothes...bright and fresh looking.

Reality shows everything in a hue that looks bleak and hopeless. Arthur looks malnourished and wearing clothes that look clearly second-hand.

This comes to a head on the Murry Franklin show, with Arthur fully embracing the madness through the presence of color, and Arkam, as Arthur is running in a incredibly bright hallway wearing white (and the blood on his shoeprints).
