As much as I love LGR and don't have too much negative to say on Clint himself, I just cannot imagine being in his shoes, being surrounded by so much computer junk. At least that's what an outsider's perspective will see it all as, just obsolete computer junk that is only appealing to a hobbyist. The people who can sit there with their 30 year old worn out 15" CRT desperately trying to claim they're having fun is indeed something I don't get. And then the people chasing down the 30" and larger CRTs... apparently forgetting how much room those things took up, and how insanely heavy they were. These are the same type of people generally confused about why those NES/SNES mini consoles sold so well. Most people just want to plug shit into their 65" TV and be done with it. Not find some clapped out CRT, pull it apart, repair and calibrate it, find some working console that they likely need to get re-built controllers for because the rubber and plastic bits inside disintegrated after 40 years, etc.
And then the space of keeping these consoles around, the pile of games, controllers, the fucking cables to connect everything.
The other part of the retro game emulation community isn't much better either "get this kit, this dev board, and these add-ons, then solder everything together, use this image for an SD card then just load up your ROMs!" meanwhile you've got something sitting in front of the TV that looks like a katamari got rolled through a Radioshack assuming you could even be bothered to buy all of the crap and then put it together, and half the time parts of the shit you need are out of stock for months at a time anyway(I've looked into this) or finding some $150 chinabox loaded up with god knows what malware that falls apart in 6 months.
I don't know(but I have a guess), and I don't find how trivial it is to emulate old hardware being a problem. You can emulate a ps1 on a raspberry pi stuffed into an altoids tin with a screen, battery, and controls. That particular formfactor isn't for me, but I've got no problem with it existing. I think it really just might have been those "mini" consoles that people can just plug in and have 20 games on them, and chinese factories stealing work done by others for years and realizing they can package it into a plastic shell and sell it to people in the west with disposable income. Making it into an "appliance" in a way.Oh yeah, I don't know when it got so trivial for emulation to get to that extent you explained. I'm just damn happy with simply having a program that can actually run the damn games at all. It always annoyed me how someone will always chime in, whenever a handheld like the Steam Deck is released, that they'll say "Oh this will be a GREAT EMULATION MACHINE!" like are you just not content with how there's like a hundred fucking handheld emulation devices that are out there prior to turning the Steam Deck into yet *another* one?
