🐱 J.K. Rowling’s Fatphobia Needs to Be Acknowledged, as Well - Fatties mad

J.K. Rowling has been dragged for her transphobia, and YouTubers Lindsay Ellis and ContraPoints have both released videos breaking down the issues with her statements, how it manifested in her work, as well as the harmful ways pop culture have contributed to this problem. However, in watching Ellis’s latest video, I was reminded that Rowling is fatphobic as hell.

In Harry Potter, there were so many characters who were fat that Rowling treated with overwhelming malice. Beauty is often shorthand for goodness, and while there were characters who were “gaunt,” there are also lots of fat jokes, from Dudley, Harry’s cousin, going from a spoilt fat child to a broad bully, to Uncle Vernon’s sister, an already fat woman, who Harry accidentally ballooned in anger. Let’s not forget when Dudley is given a curly pig tail for trying to eat some of Harry’s birthday cake. His heaviness is treated as a physical manifestation of his spoilt nature.

During the section in Lindsay Ellis’s video about Troubled Blood, the infamously 900+ page crime novel Rowling wrote under her pen name Robert Galbraith, there are multiple references to “obese” people in disparaging ways.

It’s gross, and while it is something that I know Harry Potter fans have discussed, with Rowling’s transphobia coming to the forefront recently, this is a good time to address the other issues. For so long, the nostalgia and love of this series has protected it and its author. There was an automatic idea that Rowling was coming from a place of good faith criticism. So when marginalized people, especially when they were BIPOC spoke up about it, we were silenced because the series was supposed to stand for inclusion and anti-bigotry.

As someone who loved Harry Potter, I never saw loving it and being critical of it as opposites, which, in the long run, has served me well. Rowling is not the first human being to allow their personal biases and internalized phobias leak onto the written page. We all have to work to unlearn those things.

Yet, as we have seen evident as her work has continued, she still puts the same fatphobic and “not like other girls” mentalities into her work. Part of that came from decades of going unscrutinized due to being automatically viewed as being on the “right side” of the fight. Well, now she isn’t.

Does this mean you can’t still love Harry Potter? No. That’s a personal choice for you, but it does mean that the things fandom once hand-waved because “Harry Potter is about combating racism” need to be relooked at—not just by the marginalized and BIPOC fans who have always been alert to this, but by those who told us we were reaching and promoting bigotry by even bringing it up. Be a fan, but also, do the work, if not for yourself, for the fellow fan in your community who you once spoke down to.

Harry Potter sperging incoming.

And they just ignore Horace Slughorn, the fattest guy in the books. Guy was pushing 300+ and his only real flaw was telling Voldemort about Horcruxes which ate him with guilt for years. In fact the Death Eaters were actively looking for him given that he's the only one who knew Voldemort's dirty little secret, hence why he spends his time hiding in muggle vacation homes with a plan ready to trash the place and make it look like he's already dead.

Fattest guy in the books and he's portrayed as the only member of Slytherin house who isn't a blood purist bastard and in fact was quite fond of Harry's muggleborn mother.

As mentioned above, Molly Weasley is often described as being "plump" and is never portrayed poorly. In fact I believe insulting her weight at one point caused Harry, Fred, and George to kick Malfoy's ass.

But go on about how all the portrayals of fat people in her works are negative. JK tends to only get really harsh with the villains.

Of course, because not wanting to bedrid yourself and get a heart attack from eating too much McDonald's is a bad thing.

She posted on Twitter a screen cap that she was threatened with a pipe bomb by some ugly MTF troon, so trannys worldwide are seething to extreme levels.
There's a bit more to it than that. She started off saying men shouldn't be in women's spaces, so the seething was already going in earnest. Troons are a blight on the nation and should all be dropped off in a random Mussie hellhole.

Correction: Gandalf is from LotR and isn't a fag. Yet.

Molly Weasley is also fat and she's great.
She's always really rubbed me the wrong way. She's supposed to be that sitcommy trope of mother pulling her hair out because her husband and kids are all wild, and she's the one holding everything together, but she just seems mean, angry, overbearing, controlling, constantly screaming at everybody. Her husband and kids are pretty great. But she always berates and belittles her husband while he would never say a disrespectful word to her. She treats him like he's an idiot, even tells him so, when he's actually very smart and good at his job. She's immature and petty with Hermione and Fleur (when Hermione is an actual child), reads (and believes) gossip magazines, lusts after Gilderoy Lockhart. She's fat and sits on her ass while all her kids are grown or away at school almost all year, nags Arthur who's supporting the whole family, undermines her sons when they start a profitable business, does nothing to help financially even though they can hardly afford to buy their kids' school supplies. I think she's a well-written character (she's consistent and feels real enough for a fantasy series), but I can't stand her. I don't know why I have such a strong opinion about a Harry Potter character, I just do.

These people read their Bible with about as much care as most Christians read theirs.

Dudley wasn't even fat when he went uber-bully, he was a fucking Chad at that point.

Indeed. Dudley got buff as fuck because he started boxing. Funny thing is it seemed to calm him down and matured him a lot because he and Harry's last interaction was surprisingly amicable and wholesome.
