🐱 J.K. Rowling’s Fatphobia Needs to Be Acknowledged, as Well - Fatties mad

J.K. Rowling has been dragged for her transphobia, and YouTubers Lindsay Ellis and ContraPoints have both released videos breaking down the issues with her statements, how it manifested in her work, as well as the harmful ways pop culture have contributed to this problem. However, in watching Ellis’s latest video, I was reminded that Rowling is fatphobic as hell.

In Harry Potter, there were so many characters who were fat that Rowling treated with overwhelming malice. Beauty is often shorthand for goodness, and while there were characters who were “gaunt,” there are also lots of fat jokes, from Dudley, Harry’s cousin, going from a spoilt fat child to a broad bully, to Uncle Vernon’s sister, an already fat woman, who Harry accidentally ballooned in anger. Let’s not forget when Dudley is given a curly pig tail for trying to eat some of Harry’s birthday cake. His heaviness is treated as a physical manifestation of his spoilt nature.

During the section in Lindsay Ellis’s video about Troubled Blood, the infamously 900+ page crime novel Rowling wrote under her pen name Robert Galbraith, there are multiple references to “obese” people in disparaging ways.

It’s gross, and while it is something that I know Harry Potter fans have discussed, with Rowling’s transphobia coming to the forefront recently, this is a good time to address the other issues. For so long, the nostalgia and love of this series has protected it and its author. There was an automatic idea that Rowling was coming from a place of good faith criticism. So when marginalized people, especially when they were BIPOC spoke up about it, we were silenced because the series was supposed to stand for inclusion and anti-bigotry.

As someone who loved Harry Potter, I never saw loving it and being critical of it as opposites, which, in the long run, has served me well. Rowling is not the first human being to allow their personal biases and internalized phobias leak onto the written page. We all have to work to unlearn those things.

Yet, as we have seen evident as her work has continued, she still puts the same fatphobic and “not like other girls” mentalities into her work. Part of that came from decades of going unscrutinized due to being automatically viewed as being on the “right side” of the fight. Well, now she isn’t.

Does this mean you can’t still love Harry Potter? No. That’s a personal choice for you, but it does mean that the things fandom once hand-waved because “Harry Potter is about combating racism” need to be relooked at—not just by the marginalized and BIPOC fans who have always been alert to this, but by those who told us we were reaching and promoting bigotry by even bringing it up. Be a fan, but also, do the work, if not for yourself, for the fellow fan in your community who you once spoke down to.

Nothing pisses off fat cat ladies more than telling them that Harry Potter is a gateway to white nationalism.

They want to argue it, but then you point out how much they hate JK and they just seethe

Trannies raged against this book. Fatties don't get a piece of the action too.

I haven't read it since I was a child, but iirc Dudley grew up to be a cool dude, and you gain a bit of sympathy for the family after a while.
Yeah after like 5 books of the Durnsleys are just stupid anti-wizard assholes they finally get some character development and sympathy. But even then it's childish, Petunia is mean to Harry because she couldn't get into Hogwarts being an untermenschen err a muggle. Rowling could have said her dislike for Harry was out of fear that Nazi wizards were going to show up and murder everyone since she knows what's going on but nope it's just because she always was and still is jealous of her dead witch sister Lily (Harry's mom). Vernon is just an asshole whose DNA is such filth that Rowling said there's no way Dudley could ever have a child with magical talent, Vernon's garbage DNA blocked any magic potential in Petunia's DNA that could have been passed on to him. Dudley is the one who gets to be sympathetic, I guess Rowling didn't want to have any irredeemably bad children characters. I don't remember any anyway.

I thought there was a big thing about either Crabbe or Goyle being replaced with a lanky black kid and that was supposed to be progressive.

Back when Dumbledore was announced as a big homo I remember asking some of the local homos what they thought. I thought it was kind of cool to have a gay character that didn't make his sexuality his entire reason for being, and a character so canonically powerful and popular in his own world -- fucking Dumbledore! But no, apparently that was offensive too. It's "pandering" (but all the forced, poorly-written gay pop culture characters plaguing media at the time were not; that's "representation").

There was no winning for JK even from the beginning, so she might as well go full shitlord.

Most fat-positivity advocates openly lust after only the most classically handsome, lean and/or muscular men; they're exactly like trannies who try to shame "cisgender" people into fucking them and have zero interest in other trannies. Both groups agree with the rest of society when it comes to their own preferences, but they don't want to be judged by the same standards they judge everyone else with. I think that's what I hate more than anything else about them.

I don't even like Harry Potter or JK but this shit's just going overboard. Its all ironic in a way. Rowling spent years trying to appease this crowd and just a few years ago she was being celebrated as being ultra woke for making Gandalf into a fag and posting rainbows all over social media, but now she's practically every buzzword under the sun: Racist (Dobby/no non-caucasoid leads), Trannyphobic (no trannies/social media activity), Anti-Semitic (Goblins), Ableist (Muggles), Xenophobic (wizard borders), Sexist (having all the girls hook up with guys), Islamophobic (burqas are suspicious) and even homophobic for not making Gandalf a fag sooner.

What hasn't she been accused of being?

Correction: Gandalf is from LotR and isn't a fag. Yet.

Skinny legend Joanne K. Rowling

I just call the gay old wizard from Harry Potter Gandalf or Gay Gandalf. Honestly, most of these HP characters became unmemorable as shit after the first book/movie.

But yes, the actual Gandalf's time is almost up... either that or he'll be a black woman.
