I guess there's like 3 separate areas to discuss here:
Brand new media, like a movie that just came out. You try not to discuss this with other people who've seen it if there are others around who haven't. Time limit on this is like 2 weeks, then it's like if you remember to ask "Oh, have you seen X yet?"
Old media that someone mentions they're going to watch. Obviously if you spoil it at this point you're just being a dick.
Then there's talking about some piece of media that's not brand new, and someone who happens not to have seen it overhears and complains about it being spoiled. This is the one case where the spoilee is the jackass.
I always tell everyone regardless of the movie they're talking about that Bruce Willis turns out to be dead the whole time. I never did see the sixth sense either....
