Quake became worse and worse for each iteration after 3.

i played like ten minutes of quake 4 and it was just call of duty in space

Isn't Quake 3's netcode spotty as shit these days? But yeah, Q3's solid even if younger me only fought against bots.

There's a recent port of RatMod from OpenArena to Q3 called 'Devotion' that implements much better netcode.
Scenes pretty dead though, unless you have some friends willing to play with you it's gonna be you vs the autists that never stopped playing and cheaters.
