Ahok had the misfortune of being part of two groups that Indonesian kebabs regularly enjoying beheading for sport: Christians and ethnic Chinese. It didn't help that it was an election year and he was running against a Muslim, so there was extra incentive for the courts to find against him so that they could restore the governorship to a more acceptable candidate.

What this shows is that it's virtually impossible for kafirs (non-believers) to hold political office and that religion (Islam) can be used as weapon to get whatever agenda you want and get away with it.

Yep. In fact, Ahok's detractors based much of their opposition on verse 5:51 of the Quran, which states that Muslims should not take Jews and Christians as friends/allies/protectors/leaders/etc (there's controversy as to which noun(s) is the correct one). Basically, Ahok was attacked by a bunch of Islamists who were livid that they were being governed by an impure Christian who may have said something vaguely negative about Islam.

And @melty, that's usually how these things go. Islamists (and highly conservative Muslims in general) believe that Muslims are superior to all other people. Because Muslims are so superior, having an inferior kaffir hurt their feelings or insult them/their beliefs is a heinous crime. Freedom of expression and freedom of religion don't exist to them, because only Muslims are worthy of having their beliefs respected. It's a really hard concept for most Westerners to grasp because we see it as insanely hypocritical, but then again, we're not really indoctrinated to think that our beliefs are more important than the lives and freedoms of others.

She went on to explain that Ahok had not stated that the Quranic verse he had referred to was a lie, but instead he had said that people had used that verse to lie to people.

In part of his speech Ahok said, “In your inner hearts, ladies and gentlemen, you may feel you cannot vote for me, because [you have been] lied to by the use of Surah al-Maidah, Verse 51. […] So, if you cannot vote for me because you are afraid of being condemned to hell, you do not need to feel uneasy, because you are being fooled. It is alright.”

By stating the word “use”, Rahayu said, Ahok meant the verse had been used by some people to lie. “The Quran can’t lie, but people can use anything to lie,” she said. (ebf)

Indonesia proved to be Islam's little bitch since the day it gave Aceh province the authority to use hardline sharia law.

They got independence thanks to the Japanese and the first thing they did was to impale Dutch-Indonesian women.

They deny mass killings done by the govt. and the islamic militias in 1965 and 1999.

They rape and plunder Chinese-Indonesian communities every time they know they can get away with it (eg. riots of 1998).

Saudi money are largely to blame for the last two decades though.
Islamism is substituting nationalism in the hearts of Indonesian muslims.

Yep. Saudi attempts to propagate radical Islam in Indonesia have been going on for years.

I honestly believe that Saudi Arabia is the worst- and one of the most dangerous- countries in the world. I mean, North Korea is shittier, but at least it mostly keep to itself and is only truly a threat to South Korea. Saudi Arabia has spent billions of dollars trying to make other countries as shitty as it is, and it's succeeding. There's a really good article that explains how this transformation takes place in many countries.

It was a huge mistake not allowing Saddam to roll into Saudi Arabia and curb stomp this Wahhabi nonsense before it had a chance to spread.

Whenever some idiot says that Indonesia is a "moderate" Islamic country, I remember that in 2001, an Islamic group called Laskar Jihad attacked whole Christian communities in the Molucca islands, killing thousands and forcing thousands more to convert to Islam. The women had their clitorises cut off and were forcibly "married" to Muslim men. The Indonesian government did absolutely nothing about it. In fact, Laskar Jihad was supported by the Indonesia military. A "moderate" Muslim is apparently just one who lets someone else brutalize you rather than doing it themselves. As such, "moderate" Muslims are worse than useless.

To be fair they would have to be just to survive from the looks of things, Having said that it's only since they got their arses kicked out of power in Tebbet they have played up that angle to try and get support they used to be (an want to go back to it seems) quite malicious sod's who taxed the ever loving shit out of the people.
