Disaster How The Babylon Bee, a Right-Wing Satire Site, Capitalizes on Confusion - NOOOO MOCKING YOUR LIBERAL BETTERS IS LITERALLY VIOLENCE!

On Friday, President Trump tweeted a story from an unusual source: The Babylon Bee, a right-wing satire site that is often described as a conservative version of The Onion.

“Twitter Shuts Down Entire Network to Slow Spread of Negative Biden News,” read the story’s headline. The story was a joke, but it was unclear whether Mr. Trump knew that when he shared the link, with the comment “Wow, this has never been done in history.”

Emma Goldberg, a reporter for The New York Times, recently profiled The Babylon Bee, and wrote about how the site’s satire is frequently mistaken for reality.

I chatted with Ms. Goldberg about her article, The Babylon Bee’s habit of skirting the line between misinformation and satire, and how it capitalizes on its audience’s confusion.

So, Emma, you wrote about The Babylon Bee, a satirical news site I’ve been fascinated by for a long time. It’s basically the right-wing version of The Onion, right?

Exactly. And what fascinated me in reporting this is that I’ve followed The Onion for a long time — but The Babylon Bee currently gets more traffic than them, at least according to their internal numbers.

That’s so interesting! (As an aside, I’m looking at some engagement data from Facebook now, and it’s telling me that The Babylon Bee has gotten about 45 million interactions with its Facebook page in the last year, compared with 35 million for The Onion.) Why do you think The Bee is doing so well?

Well, they certainly don’t pull any punches. Their mantra seems to be that everything is fair game: the left, the right, Trump. And in general, on the right, swiping at Trump is considered a red line, but The Bee doesn’t seem to care.

They’ve also tapped into a large audience of people who aren’t hard-line Trumpers, but are much more pissed off by the outrage that Trump generates on the left.

Right, sort of the anti-anti-Trump crowd. And the people who run the site, are they pro-Trump? What do they see themselves as doing, within the larger conservative movement?

They are ambivalent about their views on Trump, but they also proudly identify as Christian conservatives. But I noticed that their early coverage of Trump, back in 2016, was much more vitriolic than today’s. They called him a psychopath, or a megalomaniac. Now they’re more bemused by him and the ghoulish ways he’s described on the left.

But I think their willingness to swipe at him, even gently, gets at an important element for successful humor. What media scholar Brian Rosenwald told me is that the humor always has to come before the politics.

So this is a blog about distortions and misinformation, and one thing I’ve noticed recently is that a lot of The Babylon Bee’s most successful articles in terms of online engagement are the ones that are … less obviously satirical.

Totally. And that’s landed them in some hot water.

Like, one from the other day was called “NBA Players Wear Special Lace Collars to Honor Ruth Bader Ginsburg.”

People were sharing that thinking it was real.
Yes!

They certainly play to that for virality — their best content is right on the reality-satire line.

I’m wondering the extent to which being a satire site — which makes them exempt from Facebook’s fact-checking program — has allowed them to traffic in misinformation under the guise of comedy. Do you think that’s a deliberate strategy?

Well, that’s a great question, because it’s been a big source of controversy for them. They’ve had a few articles that were fact-checked by Snopes and rated “false.” Which The Bee’s writers and editors claim prompted Facebook to threaten them with being demonetized (Facebook denies this). The Bee’s founder, Adam Ford, has claimed that Snopes fact-checked them in ways that were “egregious,” with standards that wouldn’t be applied to, for example, The Onion.
The Bee feels that they’re being targeted unfairly. But Snopes has poked at the fact that their pieces can sometimes be easily mistaken for real news — which might fall on them, not their readers.

Politics aside, it sort of speaks to the impossible nature of being a satirical site in the age of the mega-platform. Because on one hand, you’ve got to write things that are so obviously made up that they can’t reasonably be mistaken for real news, but also close enough to the truth to be funny.

One hundred percent. Truth is funnier than fiction these days.

One thing I’ve wondered is what the whole “owning the libs” media industrial complex (which I’d categorize The Bee as belonging to, even if they wouldn’t) will do if Trump loses in November. Do you get the sense that The Bee cares who wins the election, from the standpoint of comedic potential?

What’s funny is that because they aren’t Trump loyalists, they can see an advantage for their comedy either way. In some senses, comedy comes a lot easier when you’re not the party in power. But on the other hand, Trump is such an absurd figure that he can lend himself to some really wild caricatures. The editor in chief of The Bee told me Trump is great for comedy, so he’d be happy to see him win — a little later, he added that maybe they’re sick of Trump humor and ready for a change. They also see a lot of humor opportunity in the Biden camp, especially playing off the “Sleepy Joe” motif.

So what I’m taking from this conversation is: The Babylon Bee is not a covert disinformation operation disguised as a right-wing satire site, and is in fact trying to do comedy, but may inadvertently be spreading bad information when people take their stories too seriously?

For the most part. But they also seem to find it pretty funny when their content is mistaken for real news — and they’re not exactly going overboard to stop that.
_____
The fact that they'd even consider satire to be deliberate disinformation shows what fart-huffing, circle-jerking loons these freaks are.

Remember, these are the cheery folk who came up with those "If you aren't outraged, you aren't paying attention" bumperstickers.

Or how The Simpsons, when it was good, at least made fun of Lisa's soapbox social cause tendencies when she yelled at a bunch of her fellow kids on the playground: "Why are you wasting time playing? There's WORK to be done!"

I miss when media made fun of self righteous idiots like Lisa Simpson instead of making them the writer's avatar

Edit: in fact, old simpsons episodes made sure to expose both the good and bad of each family member (outside of Meg for obvious reasons, she is a psychopath in the making, simple as that).

Bart could be an uncaring trouble maker but he still had a soul and could come to regret his actions
Marge could come as condescending "moralistic" but she is reminded that she is still far from perfect
Lisa could come as proto-SJW but it still showed her intentions were pure if not misguided in its execution (and also showed she wasnt above being as flawed as Bart)
Homer could be lazy, dumb and even uncaring at times but he always shows he loves his family and drags himself to work for their sake every day of the week.

Now, well, there is a reason The Simpsons isnt a "controversial" show anymore. Each character has become the steriotype they originally were meant to deconstruct.

I'm not a regular reader of it admittedly, but I didn't even realise the Bee was considered right wing.
It’s not particularly right wing. It’s just that anything to the right of Stalin is now OfficiallyNazi™️
‘Right wing’ is now synonymous with ‘things I don’t like and petulantly want to ban.’ Whether they are classically associated with the right or not.
It’s just an thought terminating insult like problematic or terf. It’s used so that the person it’s aimed at will stop what they’re doing amd desperately defend themselves against being a right winger/somethingophobe rather than continuing their course of action. The only way to short circuit it is to politely ask what specifically about whatever is right wing.

Fact checkers from Facebook, Google, and Twitter have come to the same startling conclusion: Your average social media user is too stupid to know what a joke is.

This revelation comes after Donald Trump tweeted a fake news article from the Babylon Bee. To us enlightened connoisseurs of media, we know the Babylon Bee is a "satire" site whose vain attempts at humor usually fall flat. But Trump tweeting an article from that site as if it were a real news item has pushed it into the realm of real media. This has resulted in his army of raging supporters taking the Babylon Bee seriously, hence why social media companies need to take action.

"It's frightening when you think about it" one social media fact checker told us on the condition that they remain anonymous. "These people aren't going to reputable comedic sources for their jokes. They're going to right wing propaganda sites and gobbling this garbage up as if it were fact. What scares me more is that I can only ban them from social media. I can't ban them from life."

Our anonymous source went on to say that they, as well as fact checkers from across the major social media platforms, met to discuss what else needed to be done.

"We all agreed that 'jokes' are how far right extremists will spread their misinformation. That's why we all agreed to take steps to ensure this doesn't happen. Just like how we ensured that information about Covid-19 came from reputable medical sources, jokes will now need to come from reputable comedic sources. For now these sources will be limited to Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, Trevor Noah, and the cast of Saturday Night Live. We'll announce if we decide to make any changes to this lineup."

Did you guys ever think a bunch of Protestants would be funnier than literally all of Hollywood?

You know, its funny, when I was a little shit and these social media sites were beginning to bloom, I could never get into them. Why? I always felt it was too unpersonal (and consider this is from someone who was shy, introverted and a loner) while everyone around me just kept chugging it down their throats like disney chugs that commie asian semen.

I have done many things in my younger days Im not proud of. Things I could have done better. But if there is something I will always applaud my younger self for is for never EVER getting into social media. The closest of a social media I got was Deviant Art (yeah insert your fetish jokes but I had a good circle of friends there, not so much anymore) and Skype (to communicate with said friends).

The people that got into these sites young really got hooked and basically made it a part of their lives but its not like a "healthy" part, more like a "I live there more than I live in the real world" part.
Whenever you talk to them, I think what they see is a comment and they think they can reply if they were behind a screen...

Its concerning and a bit frightening.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO STOP MAKING JOKES, YOU CHRISTIANS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE STRAWMEN AND DOOR MATS!

Leftists' perseption of humor and satire amazes me. Not in a good way mind you but Im utterly fascinated at how a group of people can miss the point so hard. Is it intentional? Are they literally incapable of processing? Questions like that really get to me. If its not "their" humor (which doesnt have a far reaching variety lets be honest), then they not only DONT get it but they want it destroyed (especially if its mocking them).
Studies have shown that there's a HUGE overlap between being a New Left activist and Narcissism. There's also Jonathan Haidt's research in "The Righteous Mind" that shows that Leftists have a huge problem explaining their opponent's views accurately - just like a Narcissist.

When I say "Narcissist" I don't mean the meme meaning of "A person who likes themselves a lot". I'm talking about the clinical meaning. They're the type of people who only think of themselves and see everyone around them as tools to use. They don't care about the feelings or views of others and never truly will. They only care about what selfish thing they happen to want at that time whether that is to feel smart, to have social status, to get money, or to be a degenerate with zero social consequences. They will lie and manipulate you to get what they want and if you dare disagree with them you're the bad guy and they're the victim.

Here's a Podcast reviewing a 1979 book from an Oldschool Leftist that's somewhat related to this subject. His book is basically ripping apart the Narcissism of the Boomer Generation and to a certain extent the New Left:

So after a manual review, Facebook says they stand by their decision to pull down this article and demonetize our page. I'm not kidding. They say this article "incites violence." It's literally a regurgitated joke from a Monty Python movie!

In what universe does a fictional quote as part of an obvious joke constitute a genuine incitement to violence? How does context not come into play here? They're asking us to edit the article and not speak publicly about internal content reviews. Oops, did I just tweet this?

A Black Lives Matter leader said that if change doesn't happen, they'll "burn down this system." That's allowed on Facebook. You can quote it. You can link to it. But a Monty Python joke about burning a witch at the stake? That's incitement to violence.

We will not be editing the article to get our page's monetization reinstated. We will, however, be talking to the media about this. Send your inquiries my way: seth@babylonbee.com

Monty Python is cancelled. Monty Python, the troupe that helped normalize and popularize the skewering of Christians... there is irony here somewhere...

I think its down to hypersensitivity from not being forced to confront adversity and a growing expectation that all media will kowtow to their homogenized cultish ideology if they demand it -- which they always do now demand it, and usually get it their way because they have a terrifying amount of power.

If someone told you twenty years ago that we would be ruled over by the leagues of the ugliest loser freak transsexual pedophiles who would craft a totalitarian panopticonical society that would have people begging for Islamization or even the sweet release of death - who would believe that?!

They're strongly against abortion and transitioning 8-year-olds, even more than they're against prosperity gospel preachers.

I still remember back in Colbert’s first year, some news article talking about how hilarious it was that Colbert’s satire of Bill O’Reilly was so perfect that some people actually believed he was a Conservative and not just totally making fun of them.

God forbid that your satire confuse the wrong people, though.

Satire has always been the bane of idiots. It's not as if the Bee doesn't make conservatives fall for their articles either.
To be fair, it's not Conservatives' fault that the modern left has become such a walking Poe. There was a satirical website that shut down because they say the feminists they made fun of were pretty much doing the same things they spoofed.

“Myself and the fellow Shitposters who operated and published articles on this website while it lasted pride ourselves on writing fairly believable satire with just enough retardation to keep our readers in constant doubt. This has been fun, but all good things have to come to an end. I am shutting down this website because recent events have proven to us that it is no longer possible to satirize the Feminist left”

I think its largely intentional, although it could be at a subconscious level.
Its like when Trump used the term 'coyote', and twitter and social media got flooded with people claiming Trump said that children are being dragged across the border by dogs. They either feign ignorance of the term, or subconsciously interpret it the most beneficial way possible (the way that makes Trump look the most evil / ridiculous). They're then surrounded by people with the same mindset, so it compounds upon itself where they can believe just about anything as long as its "beneficial"

The mockery will continue until you quit being the political equivalent of lolcows.
