Disaster How The Babylon Bee, a Right-Wing Satire Site, Capitalizes on Confusion - NOOOO MOCKING YOUR LIBERAL BETTERS IS LITERALLY VIOLENCE!

On Friday, President Trump tweeted a story from an unusual source: The Babylon Bee, a right-wing satire site that is often described as a conservative version of The Onion.

“Twitter Shuts Down Entire Network to Slow Spread of Negative Biden News,” read the story’s headline. The story was a joke, but it was unclear whether Mr. Trump knew that when he shared the link, with the comment “Wow, this has never been done in history.”

Emma Goldberg, a reporter for The New York Times, recently profiled The Babylon Bee, and wrote about how the site’s satire is frequently mistaken for reality.

I chatted with Ms. Goldberg about her article, The Babylon Bee’s habit of skirting the line between misinformation and satire, and how it capitalizes on its audience’s confusion.

So, Emma, you wrote about The Babylon Bee, a satirical news site I’ve been fascinated by for a long time. It’s basically the right-wing version of The Onion, right?

Exactly. And what fascinated me in reporting this is that I’ve followed The Onion for a long time — but The Babylon Bee currently gets more traffic than them, at least according to their internal numbers.

That’s so interesting! (As an aside, I’m looking at some engagement data from Facebook now, and it’s telling me that The Babylon Bee has gotten about 45 million interactions with its Facebook page in the last year, compared with 35 million for The Onion.) Why do you think The Bee is doing so well?

Well, they certainly don’t pull any punches. Their mantra seems to be that everything is fair game: the left, the right, Trump. And in general, on the right, swiping at Trump is considered a red line, but The Bee doesn’t seem to care.

They’ve also tapped into a large audience of people who aren’t hard-line Trumpers, but are much more pissed off by the outrage that Trump generates on the left.

Right, sort of the anti-anti-Trump crowd. And the people who run the site, are they pro-Trump? What do they see themselves as doing, within the larger conservative movement?

They are ambivalent about their views on Trump, but they also proudly identify as Christian conservatives. But I noticed that their early coverage of Trump, back in 2016, was much more vitriolic than today’s. They called him a psychopath, or a megalomaniac. Now they’re more bemused by him and the ghoulish ways he’s described on the left.

But I think their willingness to swipe at him, even gently, gets at an important element for successful humor. What media scholar Brian Rosenwald told me is that the humor always has to come before the politics.

So this is a blog about distortions and misinformation, and one thing I’ve noticed recently is that a lot of The Babylon Bee’s most successful articles in terms of online engagement are the ones that are … less obviously satirical.

Totally. And that’s landed them in some hot water.

Like, one from the other day was called “NBA Players Wear Special Lace Collars to Honor Ruth Bader Ginsburg.”

People were sharing that thinking it was real.
Yes!

They certainly play to that for virality — their best content is right on the reality-satire line.

I’m wondering the extent to which being a satire site — which makes them exempt from Facebook’s fact-checking program — has allowed them to traffic in misinformation under the guise of comedy. Do you think that’s a deliberate strategy?

Well, that’s a great question, because it’s been a big source of controversy for them. They’ve had a few articles that were fact-checked by Snopes and rated “false.” Which The Bee’s writers and editors claim prompted Facebook to threaten them with being demonetized (Facebook denies this). The Bee’s founder, Adam Ford, has claimed that Snopes fact-checked them in ways that were “egregious,” with standards that wouldn’t be applied to, for example, The Onion.
The Bee feels that they’re being targeted unfairly. But Snopes has poked at the fact that their pieces can sometimes be easily mistaken for real news — which might fall on them, not their readers.

Politics aside, it sort of speaks to the impossible nature of being a satirical site in the age of the mega-platform. Because on one hand, you’ve got to write things that are so obviously made up that they can’t reasonably be mistaken for real news, but also close enough to the truth to be funny.

One hundred percent. Truth is funnier than fiction these days.

One thing I’ve wondered is what the whole “owning the libs” media industrial complex (which I’d categorize The Bee as belonging to, even if they wouldn’t) will do if Trump loses in November. Do you get the sense that The Bee cares who wins the election, from the standpoint of comedic potential?

What’s funny is that because they aren’t Trump loyalists, they can see an advantage for their comedy either way. In some senses, comedy comes a lot easier when you’re not the party in power. But on the other hand, Trump is such an absurd figure that he can lend himself to some really wild caricatures. The editor in chief of The Bee told me Trump is great for comedy, so he’d be happy to see him win — a little later, he added that maybe they’re sick of Trump humor and ready for a change. They also see a lot of humor opportunity in the Biden camp, especially playing off the “Sleepy Joe” motif.

So what I’m taking from this conversation is: The Babylon Bee is not a covert disinformation operation disguised as a right-wing satire site, and is in fact trying to do comedy, but may inadvertently be spreading bad information when people take their stories too seriously?

For the most part. But they also seem to find it pretty funny when their content is mistaken for real news — and they’re not exactly going overboard to stop that.

The fact that they'd even consider satire to be deliberate disinformation shows what fart-huffing, circle-jerking loons these freaks are.

Homegirl saying they skirt the reality/satire line and that's dangerous or whatever. No, if anything it shows how fucking stupid and psychotic reality is becoming... And that's generally the mark of good satire.

Mocking the authority/establishment will always be funnier than mocking the underdog.
The left can't cope with the fact they are the former now.

They weren't quite the underdog even back in the 2000s, we wouldn't call them the underdogs today because even though they don't have who they want in the White House doesn't mean they still don't have a lot of cultural and media power and that was true in the 2000s as well.

It's just for whatever reason the culture allowed them to be funnier back in the 2000s, edgy ruled the day, then somewhere along the way they became giant fucking pussies and the rest is history.

Nah the 2000s were what gave way to this mess.
You wonder why the concept of the "rockstar" is dead? It's because the 2000s rock/metal scene had such a hardon for being "relatable" and "unique" that everyone ended up dressing the same and acting like a normal fan who shun the spotlight instead of acting larger than life. No more fun. Even the late 90's nu-metal shitters tried to put on a show and be more than just Bob playing the guitar, and it's why they were so big for a time. There was fun to be had.

The 2000s weren't edgy. The 70s to 80s were edgy. The 90s were edgy but had started to become somewhat sanitized.
The 2000's idea of grunge was Creed and Nickelback ffs.
Where's the 2000's equivalent of Porky's? The 2000's equivalent of exploitation flicks?

The 2000s are only funny and edgy to those who were young kids to teens in the 00s.

And once Obama was elected, oh boy... good luck making the same jokes you made about Clinton and W.
That's when the left went from hating the establishment to kissing it's ass.

Mainstream culture was in some ways toned down rom what came before, but it was still pretty edgy, at least compared to today.

Do you not remember Grand Theft Auto? That was 2000's pop culture equivalent to heavy metal in the 1980s or gangsta rap in the 1990s.

But the main edgy thing was the internet, 2000s era internet was as edgy as anything has ever been.

GTA wasn't any edgier than Mortal Kombat, Doom, Duke Nukem, or Postal. And 00s teens forget GTA was a thing in 1997 with it's edge being the same as seen in III.
GTA's innovation was it's open world, not it's edge.

And I disagree; as popular as GTA was, it does not have the impact nor devotion from fans as heavy metal or 90's rap.
GTA has 1-2 subpar clones while Metal/Rap has dozens of acts that have aged better.

But the main edgy thing was the internet, 2000s era internet was as edgy as anything has ever been.
True, but only because there was no one to try and regulate/sterilize/corporatize it until 2008.
But even then, 90s usenet was even more so.

This interview really isn't as dismissive as I was expecting, it actually feels kinda complimentary of the Bee for being able to write satire so striking that some people buy it. Dumb people fall for the onion all the time.
Yes, and notably they haven't attacked The Onion for being satire that gets confused for reality. There's many satire sites that pop up now and then in feeds and tweets I see, and the more obscure ones still sometimes get mistaken for reality because the article link doesn't explicitly say it's satirical.

But that's not the fault of the site or the form of comedy, it's usually the fault of readers only looking at headlines and accepting them as fact. And to be fair, even if you just mean this year you've got reality throwing up a great many things that are too preposterous to be real, but they are.

Still, I just remember that Arthur Chu wrote an article attacking satire, because making fun of something still conveys the message of that thing, and context doesn't matter if someone wishes to be offended. It's a useful reminder of what SJWs believe - that things are what they appear at all times and deserve to be judged accordingly.

Which feels like they want us to all behave like autists who can't understand subtlety, context or nuance.

AFAIK David Lee Roth is apolitical

That is what makes him fun. I DO COCAINE!

We all like to have that crazy friend.

Stuck up lefties butthurt about fundies making fun of them, and screaming for the latter to be censored for the sake of the children, or public decency or somesuch... Truly the full circle, in all its 360 degree glory.

I remember when Liberals on Reddit loved The Onion because it fooled so many politicians into thinking certain articles were real. Now that the shoe's on the other foot....

I wish the Bee had slightly better quality control, a lot of their content is sub par and it makes the good shit less effective.

Leftists' perseption of humor and satire amazes me. Not in a good way mind you but Im utterly fascinated at how a group of people can miss the point so hard. Is it intentional? Are they literally incapable of processing? Questions like that really get to me. If its not "their" humor (which doesnt have a far reaching variety lets be honest), then they not only DONT get it but they want it destroyed (especially if its mocking them).

The Left has officially become the embodiment of "Rules for thee but not for me"
They have no issue with """"comedians"""" like Colbert and Trevor Noah mocking conservative voters and Republicans while kissing the ass of Democrats but the second it's the other way around, all of a sudden it's something that's sinister and dangerous
Unfuckingbelievable

Because they believe every single waking moment must be dedicated to the struggle, and anything that diverts your attention from the struggle delays the arrival of the Right Side of HIstory's promised luxury-space-communism. Hurts minorities. Lets the Nazis win. Etc. And they believe they are *this* close to winning, so greatly did they buy in to the false notion that Obama was the RSoH's arrival, and that Queen Hillary would just confirm it.... 2016 broke these people on a cosmic level, to them, we were about to enter The Nexus of Joy, and mean ol' racist doody-heads pulled us back. They are DETERMINED to just crush what they see as the last stumbling block before final cultural victory, and have no time for anything but war... war ... war.... cultural war.

So, in essence, anyone just drawing a circle on paper or listening to music is WASTING TIME WE DON'T HAVE and either has to subvert their diversionary energy INTO the war-economy of aggressive IDPOL politics, or be purged. Every man woman and child NOT marching or assembling guns for the culture war every second of their day might as well be handing territory over to the enemy.... much like how showing up late for work was a capital offense to Stalin, laughing at the leader is a capital offense to progressives. So is listening to music, unless it's patriotic march tunes.

It's not that they don't GET satire, or it's purpose, they just believe having a laugh is slacking-off on the human scale, unless you are laughing at the pre-targeted enemies of societal advancement....

Remember, these are the cheery folk who came up with those "If you aren't outraged, you aren't paying attention" bumperstickers.

Or how The Simpsons, when it was good, at least made fun of Lisa's soapbox social cause tendencies when she yelled at a bunch of her fellow kids on the playground: "Why are you wasting time playing? There's WORK to be done!"

Mockery of them is treachery..... because every second spent not hammering out a sword is giving their enemies time to finish theirs.... we can laugh when the struggle is over, but not now. As soon as we Defeat Eurasia, we can turn off the telescreens.... honest....
