🐱 How Segregation And Discrimination Racialized The Obesity Epidemic

America’s costly obesity epidemic disproportionately afflicts black and Latino populations, according to a new report from Duke University.

The report from the Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity at Duke says residential segregation and a lack of upward social mobility helped create racial disparities in obesity rates, and it provides recommendations for change.

The report illuminates how “protective factors” that can help prevent obesity in the general population often do not insulate blacks. The key difference is neighborhoods: Predominantly African-American neighborhoods often lack key health-promoting resources such as parks and access to fresh foods. Those stark neighborhood differences, in turn, result from discriminatory housing policies.

“The impact of discrimination is pervasive and occurs in all arenas of everyday life. Discrimination’s adverse effect on maintenance of healthy weight and well-being is virtually as pernicious as its effects on employment and income,” said William A. Darity Jr., co-author of the report, Samuel DuBois Cook Professor of Public Policy, African and African American Studies and economics at Duke, and director of the Cook Center.

In America, nearly 40 percent of adults are obese, resulting in health care costs of some $190 billion each year to manage preventable diseases. Black and Latino adults in the U.S. have disproportionately higher rates of obesity -- 46.8 percent and 47.0 percent, respectively, versus 37.9 percent for white adults, according to National Center for Health Statistics. These high-weight individuals experience not only higher medical bills but also discriminatory hiring practices that result in lower job attainment and incomes, the report says.

Furthermore, protective factors that can reduce individuals’ risks of negative health outcomes have varying effects across race, class and gender, says the report, “Inequity in Place: Obesity Disparities and the Legacy of Racial Residential Segregation and Social Immobility.”

For example, income serves as a protective factor against obesity in children, but higher income is less protective for black children than it is for white children.

“For whites, increased income and educational attainment tend to yield increased access to resources that promote healthy weight maintenance. But for blacks of similar status, racism-driven mechanisms often prevent them from accessing those same resources,” said Imari Z. Smith, lead author and an associate in research at the Cook Center.

Residential segregation is one such mechanism. Through years of racially discriminatory rental and sale practices, predominantly black neighborhoods have been systematically demarcated and devalued. Predominantly black neighborhoods disproportionately feature lower access to fresh food (in neighborhoods known as food deserts), higher access to fast food and other unhealthy options (food swamps), and reduced access to opportunities for physical activity.

As a result, health-promoting resources are inequitably available to blacks and whites. The authors note that neighborhood characteristics -- not genetic or cultural factors -- are the key drivers of differing obesity rates between blacks and whites. Once factors like age, income and education are considered, black and white women living in the same neighborhoods face similar odds of obesity.

The report features 10 sweeping policy suggestions to reduce the racial obesity disparity, including increasing investment in safe and high-quality neighborhood parks and recreation centers; reducing the existing weight-loss requirement for obesity treatment covered by Medicare and Medicaid; implementing federal programs to provide future generations with the wealth that remove economic barriers to weight management; and updating zoning laws to reduce the prevalence of food deserts and food swamps.

The authors also call for more policies that accommodate and respect people of all sizes, which could have magnified effects for people doubly burdened by obesity and racial discrimination.

“Research shows that discrimination negatively affects individual health, with weight discrimination being associated with the decreased ability to fight inflammation, metabolize foods and regulate blood sugar,” said Smith. “Given the racial disparity in obesity outcomes and chronic stress measures, added racial discrimination experienced by blacks has the potential to further amplify the physiological impacts of weight discrimination.”

worked at a starvation Army in a predominantly lower class mostly black town
In this part of the corn field the blacks, Despite having zero money and living off of food stamps and subsidies which are basically reparations we're all fat as Fuck ..... Why you may ask simple diet and lifestyle. As for the starvation Army part we would often hand out nutritious food as well as entire sheet cakes from Walmart, Most of the fresh vegetables and non-processed Foods would often go to waste

Gee maybe nonwhite people should stop buying into the narrative that anything that makes you healthy, prosperous, and successful is a "white people thing" and embracing it makes you an uncle tom. Shoving sugary fatty fried foods and carbonated soft drinks in your face all day every day isn't good for you and the rest of us don't need to waste our energy caring that it's your "culture".

Truth right here. Nothing is ever going to change until "acting white" and "acting black" are gone. Nobody is as obsessed with how black someone is than other black people.

The biggest hambeasts featured on the Farms are fucking white. I call shenanigans.

That's fucking stupid.

But that would mean taking responsibility, and god fucking help ghetto america if they have to take any amount of responsibility for how shitty their situation is on any level.

Perhaps it's just coincidence that racial obesity rate correlates well with racial IQ

Diversity at Play
The elder of the study is William Darity, and like the true scholar he is, he is all for reparations. They all seem to be generic race-baiting fools.

So everybody except asians are whaling up? Goddamn wypipo!

The obesity differences among men, similarly, are as stark as those observed among women
(Figure 1).5 Latinx men have the highest rate of obesity (43.1 percent), and Asian men have the
lowest (10.1 percent).5 White and black men have very similar obesity prevalence rates at 37.9
percent and 36.9 percent, respectively.5 Both black and Latinx women, compared to their same-
race male counterparts, are significantly more obese. This signals that black and Latinx women
are most affected by obesity, with black women bearing the greatest consequences.

According to the study Asians are the least obese by far. How have they become immune to the powers of segregation and racism that cripple blacks and latinos? Maybe we should be breeding more asians, and fewer of the troublesome breeds.

Their final recommendation:
Prioritize regulations that ensure respect for people of all sizes and make accommodations for individuals with bodies outside of what is deemed “healthy weight.” Recently, we have seen personal accounts of the maltreatment of obese individuals (or “fat-shaming”) and a number of body-positive beauty campaigns as means of combatting such stigma. Research shows that discrimination negatively affects individual health, with weight discrimination being associated with the decreased ability to fight inflammation, metabolize foods, and regulate blood sugar.65 Given the racial disparity in obesity outcomes and chronic stress measures, added racial discrimination experienced by blacks has the potential to further amplify the physiological impacts of weight discrimination. While this report examines structural
levers of racial obesity disparities, there are biological, medical, and psychological factors, as well as reasons related to food preference and disability, that drive weight outcomes. All people, regardless of size or the means by which they acquired their size, are deserving of the right to exist free of shame and discrimination. Policymakers need to endorse regulations that provide resources for people actively seeking weight loss strategies instead of policies that require weight loss in order to fully participate in society.

Removing the shame from being fat, making fat people's lives less challenging, that'll solve this problem! Really, almost all of their recommendations work to make the problem worse. This is truly diversity inaction, and it is horrifying.

Though one point I agree with them on: remove liquor stores from low-income neighborhoods altogether. No package-liquor, no beer, none of it - remove it all! I've seen that happen over and over again, liquor store moves in and almost overnight you have drunks in pajamas shuffling to and fro the liquor store all day long.

This is like saying it's wrong to shame people for getting into knife fights, so instead of sending them to the hospital we should act like there is no "unhealthy" number of stab wounds you can walk around with.

Foodz beez wayciss n sheet! It's all those white devil's faults that we eat McDonald's more often than Chris Chan! Dieting is a social construct!

Christ I hate leftists so fucking much...

Hmmm, maybe, just maybe most Latinos and Blacks are just peices of shit who over indulge in the food our glorious country can provide and want to blame their shit life decisions on whitey...

No, no, I'm definitely the crazy racist white man.

They want rich white people to start whole foods and shit like that in the ghetto, get robbed nonstop and turn no profits due to expense, become insolvent, then repeat over and over until racism is stopped.

Maybe. And I'm just throwing this out here, maybe, we can just make fun of fat people because they have no discipline and quit trying to find scapegoats or systematic horrors making a chunky bitch consume five doughnuts for breakfast?

Even in the most poor ghettos you can still eat healthy and get appropriate exercise. Just because a dude is dark dont mean he gotta eat McDonalds dollar menu five times a day or cant cook to some degree at home.
I lived in a very low income part of a city for a number of years and there were plenty of healthy options at the crappy supermarkets near my apt.

I would go in and buy chicken, broccoli, rice, and black beans while EBT Queens would walk out with a cart of processed sugar.

They had the option and chose poorly. The local McDonald's was never empty either. Fuck even the shitty Chinese place had incredible veggie dishes but the locals only bought chicken wings.

Maybe it is an educational issue but it isn't racism or lack of options.

I don't think much of that analogy, but I do agree I was being too harsh and hyperbolic. :P

Do food deserts even exist? Even the shittiest and most ghetto gas stations I've visited had cans of beans and apples/bananas.

Yes they do. I currently live in one. The chain folded and no one will open up a new supermarket here. The funny thing is that it's a protected building because some famous architect designed it. So it's all covered in metal sheeting now to keep it from getting destroyed by Ty'Qwandre. And it's going to sit like that for eternity.

But we do have a lot of bodegas that picked up the slack by stocking produce and meat. Their prices have actually gone down a bit. But they also have really cheap junkfood. They open up the family packs of snack cakes and sell the individually wrapped cakes two for a dollar. Some of them don't seem to abide by the beverage tax either. I got a 20 ounce Pepsi for $1.25. There's no way anything about that was taxed.

You can get to Walmart and Aldi easily by bus. It's not that bad unless you are in such a bad state that you can't afford bus fare.

But things in Philly at least aren't quite as bad as they used to be. It just sucks that I can't walk to a grocery store in this area very easily. There are worse places than this though. The reason for food deserts is crime. No one wants to open a supermarket that is going to get robbed five times a week because a brotha is lookin' to get paid.

So essentially, blame it on niggers.
