Once the internet was epic and full of win but now everything sucks. How do we fix it? I like to think that this is just a dark age and in 5 years the internet will change drastically yet again for better or worse.
 
There's no wresting it from the corporate and political interests that threaten it. If you're bemoaning the loss of a culture you once loved you'll be disappointed because what's resurrected is only ever a funhouse reflection and until the day the smartphone dies we'll not see such a return either.
 
The internet had a golden age in the same way that gold rushes for a while are a paradise for independent prospectors -- eventually things consolidated as they always do, and it became a stale, corporate platform where only the most mainstream opinions are tolerated. I hate to say it but cyberpunk called it before the web was ever invented.
 
There's money to be made on the 'net, of course it's gone to shit.
If it were difficult for people to use the internet fewer people and businesses would be interested in touching it.
