Zack Snyder made jokes about how everybody loved Rorschach so much, he should just do a sequel called Planet Rorschach. Apparently Lindelof thought he was serious.

This is going to be so bad. The only solace to be found here is the thought of how angry Alan Moore must be.

I think the oddest part of the trailer is the implication that conservative patriotic Americans are killing cops which is so absurdly far removed from reality it's comical.

At least post the trailer, people:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=zymgtV99RkoAnd yeah, this looks like a hard nope from me.

What the fuck did I just watch?

I thought the purpose of trailers was to entice people to see the thing you are advertising.

This just left me fucking baffled. What is even supposed to be happening here? Did they replace the KKK with a Rorschach cult? Why the fuck are the cops all wearing yellow masks?

Also, which ending are they going to be using as canon for this, the one from the comic, or the one from the movie? I ask, because both of those would have very different implications on the following plot.

It's popular to give Lindelof a lot of shit, but I liked Lost a lot, and he earned a ton of cred with me for The Leftovers, which was amazing all around. I even liked Prometheus (warts and all).

So it makes me really sad to see this kind of talent (cast included) contributing to... whatever the fuck this is.

All I can guess is this is supposed to happen after the graphic novel. Maybe the evil rednecks who read the far-right, yellow journalism magazines Rorschach mailed his stuff to got inspired by him? But how does that explain the cops? Ugh...

I appreciate this isn't just a weird, loose adaptation of the original story, but I don't want this IP touched at all, no matter what they make out of it. I may have said something similar about Fargo, but I really mean it this time. The fact this exists is offensive to me, and the apparent lack of nuance is even more so.

Yes.

I have some questions too.

If so many cops are being killed by white nationalists, why isn't the FBI rolling up the very next day in armored carriers? They dismantled white domestic terrorism near completely after Timothy McVeigh and fucking killed him. Why is the local sheriff the only one dealing with them?

Where did the masked people get a .50 caliber, working machine gun from? Did they use a mail order catalog? Is this 1933?

The super-hero black lady is wearing a badge on her belt. Wouldn't the masked vigilantes then know she might be a cop or the wife of a cop and then start randomly killing family members of police officers?

If the masked vigilantes found the journal and know the truth, why doesn't Veidt just fucking murder them all and raze the town? He's the richest, smartest man in the world, and yet a bunch of Nebraska hicks can't be easily dealt with?

Why are the vigilantes suddenly killing cops? If they found the journal, wouldn't they try to kill Veidt? Did the police take their twitter away? Did Rorschach write: "Adrian Veidt did the thing in New York. P.S. Kill the Police, they gave me too many parking tickets"?

Is Don Johnson implying that the masked vigilantes murdering cops were always doing this when he said 'They're back now'? If this is such a problem that all police have to wear masks now, where's the National Guard or the Federal Government? If he's talking about Superheroes, they don't kill police. Who is 'they'? Are we meant to imply Superheroes? But the Superheroes aren't killing police in Watchmen so why would they kill police if the masked vigilanties were just hibernating why didn't the fbi infiltrate them if they're superheroes they're not really all that heroic why are the masks yellow is that like a bullseye on their face why are they saying tick tock, did they inhabit a nuclear bunker, DO THEY HAVE THE LAUNCH CODES, the original watchmen clock was the doomsday clock counting down to nuclear war with the ussr is there another one for when hick milita men start world war 3 are there any nukes in neb

The answer to all those questions is of course "Trump Supporters/ConservativesUm I mean "White Nationalists" are bad!" and you will beaten over the head with this message because Hollywood is gonna be assblasted about Trump for all eternity.

It's adorable you think any anything other than this went into their creative process.

I try to give all art the benefit of the doubt. But it really just seems that way. The scenario just doesn't make any sense, Watchmen wise or Reality wise. White Supremacists who kill cops are typically biker gangs and hardcore Neo-Nazis. Not generic Christian Conservatives who love cops.

Why would Midwestern Christian Conservatives adopt the values of a murdering sociopath who never killed any cops? Its like the people read the comics and saw "Oh, Rorschach hated the gays and the degenerates so he would let all these murders and psychos follow him." He was a fucking Batman analogue. Just like Veidt was a Superman one. Jesus, this shit is so dense.

"Yeah, its going to be loosely related"

Than why use Watchmen at all? People who don't read Watchmen but saw the movie will be confused because its not a sequel and people who read the comic will be fucking furious. So is this for like, people who heard, 'Oh Watchmen is that famous comic thingy.' How the fuck do you even do marketing on that?

"I have heard of this, therefore I will consume it even if I am completely clueless about it"

Just who the fuck is this for? Right now it seems like they're using the IP to spread bullshit propaganda. Alan Moore is as progtard as he gets, but like GRRM, he says the Watchmen is unfilmable and it is. Because like books, you have to go back and forth and re-read things and take in the art and scene composition slowly. So even if he agrees with this politically, there's no way Veidt was an allegory for Trump. Each was a super-hero archtype and a purposeful deconstruction of the medium itself. To say that Veidt represents a political figure is an absolute disrespect to the work.

Moore got angry when the V for Vendetta movie made an allegory between the villain and Dubya. He based the original story on Thatcherism and argued that the story has no point if you remove that aspect of his comic. He definitely wouldn't agree with the very concept of this show with the really heavy liberties it's taking with the source material, but he takes political influences on his stories really seriously.

I've always argued that Watchmen might work best as a miniseries. While Watchmen was created as a comic first and foremost and is meant to be read that way (which is also the crux of Moore's argument, and a legitimate one like that), the average length of the miniseries allows for more detail and greater ability to adapt the story. I recall Snyder saying that a movie that had everything would take like 12 hours. It wouldn't be a perfect adaptation since even then you'd miss on the brilliant compositions of the comic, but at the very least it'd tell the story more efficiently.

At least I argued that until this show became a thing. It's like, you have one of the best comics ever written but instead of adapting it for a decent miniseries you just make it a sequel but not really and make the stupid "the story didn't say it had to be x and y" argument in changing shit that didn't need to be changed.

Bad Robot in a nutshell.
