Just a few thoughts now that I'm sober, nothing to see here.

Disclaimer: If you're a fan of the books you probably shouldn't read the below, in which a person who is rather too well-read in the actual (non-sci-fi/fantasy) literature of the world points out a lot of things you might not like to hear about them.

I agree that a huge part of the issue is Martin and his lack of a clue of what he really wants to do with this. It is well-known that he loves sniffing his own farts by reading fan ideas and theories, which is an exceptionally bad idea when you don't yourself know what you intend to do with your material and worse when you are easily influenced, as he clearly is. While the books are popular and many people like them, from a mechanical and literary standpoint they are barely managing mediocre. He is absolutely terrible at any kind of plot or pacing and cannot seem to resist including, in massive and unnecessary detail, countless diversions and forays into characters, places, or things that are utterly irrelevant to the main plot. The concept itself is not unique; it's merely based off of historical events but set in a fictional world with very nebulous and undefined notions of magic and divinity. The characters are hit and miss as to depth, growth, and consistency. If he had stuck to telling this particular story in a trilogy, as he originally intended, it would have been much better and he then could have fucked around writing a bunch of other garbage set in the same universe that most people wouldn't care about. Instead the books became more and more bogged down with his egotistical ramblings and subplots until they ground to a halt entirely. So, while they are better than other fantasy books and people who primarily read that genre often think they are great because they don't read much else, by literary standards they have serious shortcomings across the board.

That said, the show creators (I guess most call them D&D?) fell flat on their faces obviously. I am aware that many of the actors were getting understandably restless after a decade of work on the show. Most were aging out of their roles and after ten years of the same parts I'm sure that many of them will struggle to find roles after this. I don't understand the decision to do six 90 minute episodes; if you're filming the damn season anyway, do ten 90 minute episodes and wrap it up properly. I suspect that they, too, fell into the trap of reading too much into what the "fans" (read: whiny SJWs on Twitter) wanted and thought that this was going to be some sort of grand twist of an ending that people would be stunned by but ultimately like.

The issue is that the bulk of their fanbase isn't autistic enough to spend all their time on Twitter and Reddit talking about it, and this ending completely invalidates so many aspects of the past ten years of the show. Why is Jon a Targaryen if not to do something with the dragons and become king? What is the point of sending him to the Wall again when the Unsullied were leaving anyway? Why did Arya fuck around learning to become an assassin and do the face swap bullshit if not to assassinate a queen? She killed the Night King, yes, but she didn't really use her skills for that. Why is Cersei allowed to escape the death she has earned by dying in Jaime's arms instead? Why validate Bran, one of the least relevant and interesting characters in the series, by making him king? What claim does he have, and what the fuck is the three-eyed raven garbage? Why validate Sansa, who has become a distasteful mixture of Catelyn and Cersei, by making her queen? Not to mention, what the fuck was the point of the dragons at all? Daenerys could have shown up in King's Landing with just the Dothraki and Unsullied and had the same outcome. If two of the three dragons were dead anyway, and then the last one leaves instead of sticking with the last Targaryen, why have dragons at all? Why not save the budget?

I think this sort of nullifying of everything that was built up is the cause of the fans' outrage. And, while I find it amusing, it's not unjustified. I just always saw the source material for what it was, was impressed when HBO managed to polish the turd into something presentable for the first few seasons, and now have watched it go sideways until gloriously imploding into itself in a black hole of failure in the last episode. Rather glorious, really. Of all the ways they could have left it, they chose this. I mean, even waiting for the Unsullied to leave and then bringing Jon back would have been fine and made more sense but no, he killed a woman and people might reeeee about that if we let him also have power. It's just really spectacular in its lack of any kind of sense or awareness of itself or its audience. :story:

Elective monarchies have been relatively common in history. The Holy Roman Empire and Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth both lasted centuries.

Yes, that is correct.

At least ghost got a pat. He should have bit John's hand off though.

Where did the fuckin dothraki go BTW? Infintely respawning Mongol hordes in your war torn Kingdom seems like a problem to be addressed.

That's what I was just thinking earlier today in between my shifts.

Let's say the show played out all the way through to the part where Jon killed Dany and Greyworm brings Tyrion up to the moot.

Greyworm is in charge of Dany's army. He's got the unsullied and the dothraki in his back pocket. Furthermore Yara swore allegiance to them and... Dorne...guy... is probably still allied with Dany's legacy. Or at the very least they'd have no reason to ally with the last Lannister.

So let's recap: He's got one of the best defensive units in Westeros. He's got the best cavalry in Westeros. He's also got the best navy in the Westeros. And he's also got... whatever Dorne does.

Further as we've seen in the last couple episodes, Greyworm doesn't give a solitary fuck. He has shown he will kill in cold blood.

I know this will anger the anti-SJW crowd, but there is no fucking reason why Greyworm didn't just say "fuck all y'all honkies," and have the dothraki bull rush the moot. The only capable fighters in that crowd was Arya and Brienne. He could've taken the entire 7 Kingdoms by force easily.

But thankfully for them, Greyworm doesn't have any balls, and he lets Tyrion fart out some speech about electing AFK Lad to be King. Lovely.

EDIT: Also, how the shuddering fuck does Jon Snurrr not get torn to bits by the Unsullied and Dothraki, all of whom are unflinchingly loyal to Dany, after stabbing her?
I mean, fuck, here's my spur of the moment rewrite. Jon's discovered moments after the deed by Arya who's always skulking about. She spirits him away in a defensible tower not destroyed and protected by 500 Northmen. The unsullied surround the tower but realize that it would be foolish to assault. Things remain a stalemate for a month until you have some unnamed but major character broker a truce. Fuck, show Davos smuggling in food or some shit.

Of course that would take valuable money-counting time away from D&D. So we needed a completely unrealistic take on it.

They should have issues safety goggles due to all the loose ends flying around.

Martin's last book was released last year, in November.

But yeah, ASOIAF was meant to be three books then GRRM decided upon a five book series, than a seven...

Everything beyond A Storm of Swords has just been coasting on the successes of the first three.

I'm a book reader, so I was considering getting into the show just to have an ending. Now, I'm just hoping they don't fuck up The Witcher series and am content to leave ASoIaF unfinished..

The Witcher? God no, don't remind me. They already tried to cast Ciri as black and ended up with black Fringilla and indian Yennefer. The writers are SJW lunatics. And it's made by Netflix. It's going to be a woke shitfest.

Netflix, who go on about being woke but are more than happy to kow tow to some shithole Middle Eastern dictatorship because it showed a comedian (a comedian of colour, no less) who criticised the Saudi regime.

Netflix, who willingly host shitty anti-vaxx and anti-GMO and 9/11 truther conspiratard-fests then do... this.

Netflix, who I don't have a subscription to and probably never will.

And Witcher fans will be labelled as subhuman monsters when we point out how they fucked it up.

Remember, way back when, the days when nerdy interests weren't repackaged to appeal to the masses? Before nerd culture went mainstream, and various groups tried to take those interests in order to twist them to their own liking? Remember when a work stood on it's own merits as good or bad, instead of the media telling us what to like? Somehow, it's worse to be a nerd now when everyone can wear a superhero logo on their shirts than when you'd be relentlessly mocked for doing so past the fourth grade.

I don't know about HRE, but the big problem with Poles was that power was concentrated in the hands of noble houses, while elected king had to squander whatever power and influence he had to bribe the nobles to have his heir follow him. When conflict came, king could not rally enough resources from nobles who behaved like independent kingdoms, thus it resulted in overall decline of the country that was effectively split by selfish houses who cared nothing for a common cause.

With Sword and Fire and an awesome novel, no dragons or white walkers, but excellent, historical piece on how Poles fucked themselves in ass.

The costumes are very period accurate, these guys went full out to get the shit right.

I believe it's a trilogy with a prequel and a sequel, but I may be wrong.

But yeah, ASOIAF was meant to be three books then GRRM decided upon a five book series, than a seven...

I have a feeling GRRM realized that this will now take 9 books and he said, "ah fuck it!" by the time his fans stop sucking his dick he'll be dead.

It veered from sociological storytelling to psychological. They didn't have the time to wrap up everything in a nice little package (why wasn't this 8-10 episodes!?), so most of the characters turned into a caricature of what they were, not the complex personalities the writing built them up to be.

I do think in it's rushed state the outcomes did make sense, it's just really unfortunate that someone actually made the decision to trim one of the best shows in history.

He is supposed to write two books but he won't. He will croak before the sixth one is finished. He spent his free time after finishing Dance of Dragons doing interviews and fan meetups and pointless history novels.
So we are left with this disaster of ending.

But I have to ask.
What is King Bran the Broken, Connoisseur of Wheelchairs, Voyeur of Rapes actual tax policy?
WoW was split into two books I believe. With A Dream Of Spring that's three books.
No taxes on wheelchairs and ballistas I'm sure.

lol Maisie Williams-this post is almost every meme from this season

All the Unsullied should be like that. it's the whole point of their training. They'll kill millions of innocents systematically on command, much less when they have personal stake in it. And the Dothraki just do it for fun.
