I think it's clear he's trying to make a play on the ball, but came down on the guys ankle by accident, and let off once he could from momentum/weight/balance. For what it's worth from what I've seen from BR football and from the BR friend I know who not only shows me said footy, and is again very big on BR football, the main ref in the USA match, Claus, is infamous for being a cunt.
