I think that might be the contemporary explanation for furry network not taking off but I think that is not entirely true.Weasyl and FurryNetwork are both competently-made websites but neither one really had the ability to gain any meaningful presence in the fandom. Weasyl, because they fought and lost the battle of widespread adoption against FA at its height, and FurryNetwork because the website is funded/owned by Bad Dragon and people objected to using it on those grounds.
Furry network launched to the furry public in May of 2016 during BLFC, while FA was experiencing an outage from an attack. Those individuals (to my knowledge) have never been named but from all the gossip circles, rumor mills and people I know who were kind of in the know believe it was done by bad dragon. I think that even with that sort of leverage and momentum they just fumbled it at the goal line and didn't have a product that was good enough to make people switch. Ten years ago FA was really still a powerhouse and it was where the fandom happened, furry twitter was a thing but it wasn't the spot where online interactions were taking place. All of my friends who had an FA then, and signed up for furry network, stopped using it within a month once FA stabilized.
A decade later, a few of them still use FA and a few still use twitter. Now everyone just uses discord or telegram.
