Speaking of Stanley Kubrick, his first choice for the role of Major Kong in Dr. Strangelove was John Wayne, who turned the role down because they found the script to be "too pinko". After several other Western actors rejected the part for similar reasons, Slim Pickens was suggested and brought in at the last minute, but, afraid that he might object as all the other candidates had, Kubrick convinced him that the film was a serious Cold War drama, with Kong as the hero. Everyone else on set was in on the deception, and Pickens never had a clue until the film was released.
