Sweden and Finalnd have now signed defense treaties with the UK.

So if the UK is present in Finland and Russia attacks, Russia has attacked a NATO Member by proxy and NATO can come into Sweden and Finland for defense.

The Application for NATO will proceed with stumbling blocks, but effectively the treaty with the UK gives Sweden and Finland access to NATO by proxy.

No, because our entire nuclear deterrent is submarine based. In addition, the security agreements with sweden and finland don't extend to placing any of our forces or equipment in either country. They are agreements to come to their aid if they're attacked, not to create bases there, or exchange units. There would be no proxy casus belli; were the UK to aid them in the event of an attack, NATO would not be required to assist us in that instance, unless we invoked the charter.

If the treaty says if Finland is touched then the UK can come to their defense. With UK forces in Finland in the event of Russia incursion NATO is obligated to assist the UK if their forces come under fire.

Well, if ever there were two countries that could make a convincing argument for staying 'neutral'. *

The Swedes and the Finns played both sides in the previous world war (to my limited understanding - don't know much about it), and both the 'axis' and 'allies' turned a blind eye because it was convenient to both of them to do so.

I'm not really a student of history - I like hearing opposing opinions and viewpoints. I'm a sperg but not that much of a polit sperg. It's just that all of this feels like a build up to something much greater, that we are only just in the early stages of whatever it is that is about to come that will really impact all our lives. Might be wrong.

The only question now is what will Russia do in a few days time when it becomes official.

Russian energy supplier RAO Nordic says it will suspend deliveries of electricity to Finland from Saturday, citing problems with payments.

The company said it had not been paid for previous deliveries.

I would say it's more in their interest to join since Sweden is still connected to the ocean and isn't completely grid locked like Austria and Switzerland. Plus it dosent hurt to know that your neighbours won't abandon you if you somehow did get attacked. Not that I expect them to abandon Sweden regardless.

Sweden was more neutral because of them supplying the Nazis Iron to keep them from attacking. Once the tides were pretty clearly on the Allies favour, they stopped.

(And Norway too till the nazis found out the allies were trying to convince the weegies to stop, even using sea mines to stop supplies towards nazi germany and decided occupation to keep that supply secure.)

Finland was dealing with the Winter War and once it was settled, The Nazis supplied and somewhat helped the finns with the continuation war when Nazi Germany was invading the USSR. After the Nazis were kicked out and the Soviets were going in for the attack. Finland had to go in the defensive position and try and sue for peace which did happen but under the allies agreement that they kick out the Nazis out of Finland, help the Allies while giving back land to the USSR and monetary reparations. (Which they end up even losing more than the end of the Winter War).

Russia won against Finland. Two times. The Fins lost the Winter War and the Continuation War. In fact Finland has a fairly meh military history. People always try and make them sound badass but they can never complete a military victory and thus lose.

Both the United States and the Russian Federation met the central limits of the New START Treaty by February 5, 2018, and have stayed at or below them ever since. Those limits are:

If russia didn't invade Ukraine they wouldn't have sweden and Finland trying to join NATO now. Even if the economy tanks in the west sweden and Finland joining NATO puts Russia in a worse geopolitical position now.
