It looks as if the rumors are true. Finland's leadership is weighing its options with regards to joining NATO and feels it is in a position to add to the military alliance in light of Russian military actions in Ukraine.

As mentioned in the linked article, this now kicks the ball in Sweden's direction as they also grapple with the idea of joining NATO. Meanwhile, Russia has responded swiftly (archive) to the news, saying:
"Finland joined the unfriendly steps taken by the European Union towards our country. This cannot fail to arouse our regret, and is a reason for corresponding symmetrical responses on our side," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

What are your thoughts on this development? Was it inevitable given the trajectory of relations between Europe and Russia over the last decade? Will this be a benefit for NATO? And what of the long-term impacts on Russia as it is further removed from the European body politic?

If Finland joins within the next few weeks, I am 80/20 against Russia doing anything about it. They are simply too bogged down in Ukraine, the other nations believe Russia is a paper tiger because of being bogged down in Ukraine and invading Finland seems like a bridge too far that would lead to actual military intervention by NATO.

This is if you assume that they are trying to join for the stated reasons. The actual reasons might very well be to provoke Russia into becoming the soviet boogieman once again. One of the reasons globohomo grew so dominant from the 1960's to the 90's was because politicians and the economic elite could justify pretty much any violation of a citizens rights in the name of fighting the soviets. All to their own economic and political benefit. The various incursions into sand nigger territory in the 2000's-2010's were merely trying to create more terrorist boogieman to do much the same.

So who the fuck knows if NATO would actually do anything.

Given Russia's track record against Finland during the Winter War, they'd be wise to not fuck around with Finland lest they get their asses handed to them again in the most humiliating way possible.

Based, it will make suicide rates in NATO go up.

Finland already had a treaty with NATO I think, so no, not unless The ghost of Kyiyiyiyiv shows up and routs ruskies before flying over Moscow dropping some Degurechaff body pillows.

Prediction is that Russia will take the holols and Nato will gain new members, both will boldly claim victory.

It's sad how they abused such laws to crack down on the innocent while gleefully allowing very real marxist spies and subverters to take over important institutions.

Anyways; this sucks. I don't like Russia but NATO is a globohomo empire and it growing is bad.

Well, the chances are definitely not going down.
If Russia finds itself cornered by conventional military means, they WILL use nuclear weapons.
>implying they haven't been stolen or sold to mafia
>implying they haven't corroded to dust
>implying Americans or their (((allies))) haven't hacked into them and gained absolute control
>implying the troops will actually want to launch them
>implying the troops will actually know how to launch them
>implying Elon won't jam Glonass to redirect any successfully launched nuke to Moscow

Russian nuclear response system is very out of date and extremely slow. America could have 100s of nukes in air while Russia just launched a couple. Even Putin knows this at least to some extent..

I want Russia to invade Finland so I can see A&H melt down with "Russia good NATO bad" people vs "Finland is based they killed commies" people arguing for thousands of pages

I read today on the BBC website that Russia is gonna turn the gas pipeline off TOMORROW, if Finland join Nato. Do a search for "Russia threatens to turn off gas supply tomorrow" and see what you come up with. Either Russia make this threat every day or those in Nato are saying they make the threat every day.

Yet...

When I come back to the article an hour or two later, the fucking beeb cunts have altered it again.

Not even going to bother linking. I should have archived I know, but what does it matter?

One thing that is still up though on that article that they changed (no mention now of Russia threatening to turn off the pipes the next day) is a very informative little infographic, which I did archive:

DGHG.PNG

Fuck me, talk about painting it in black and white! If I wasn't convinced before, I am now. Cheers beeb!

I mean, they (Nato) waited a few years while they got all their ducks in a row, then BAM! After the 7 year itch was up after the fucking Berlin wall came down in 1990, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and fucking Albania have now all joined the Nato alliance.

They don't name the countries but I think those are the ones (didn't check a wiki). Geography is not my strong point either, but apart from one of those big white blobs being a Serb stronghold, the other is Austria and Switzerland. You can have your apple strudel, but you can't eat it as well! They would be the icing on the cake!

So thanks for that map! When you put it like that. Plus, you can see that Finland and Sweden really do seal the deal, well...

Ukraine really is the final bastion!

I still think Putin's a cunt. But even though I was leaning towards fairly neutral in this fight, this map just helped my simple mind with its "painting by numbers" narrative. Thank you beeb!

As for Russia turning off the gas tap/pipe Tomorrow? Well, maybe they will, maybe they won't. But they might! And that is a frightening prospect. Of course they miss out on money from all that 'black gold' (even if it's in the form of natural gas). But as the furry freak brothers said: Gas will get you through times of no Rubles, better than Rubles will get you through times of no Gas! Or something like that.

There's also the diesel thing. Farming equipment needs it. Russia exports a lot of it. A lot of the pre-cursors for making it. Diesel is not too far removed from aviation fuel as well. But who cares if you can't fly? Either because you aren't allowed or your economy has crashed and you can't afford to. Why not both?

Oh, things are shaping up very nicely indeed for fucking WWIII, if you ask me.

Threats, threats and more threats and when they don't work more grandstanding and brinkmanship, leading to more threats, more mockery when those threats aren't carried out, until one day something snaps in the whole chain, and consequences will never be the same again. No point in back-tracing it. You dun goofed!

I doubt all this preamble and the co-ordination of both Sweden and Finland announcing at the same time whether they will, or will not, be applying for Nato membership (of which they have been assured a very quick initiation should they actually do it, by other Nato members) is just for show or just to poke the bear more. It's a softening up. They are joining. They don't go through all this BS just to say "eh guise, we thought about it, but nah, not joining Nato, soz! Cya!".

It's fucking happening.

And the sooner those fucking dumb Ruskies get used to the idea of being completely surrounded by usurped and bought and paid for countries (from the 'West'), the better we can all get along, uh? Uh?

It's now or never baby!

Someone made the point that Russia is effectively too weakened at this point to do much about shit, and that's a fair point. I don't know. But this is turning in to more than a grudge to be remembered for later when you CAN do shit about it.

I get the impression that Russia feels like it is fighting for its life. And anyone who has been in a fight to the death will know that's it's not just fists that come out. You'll use your boot, you'll use that broken chair leg, you'll use that knife you had hidden in your socks and that hammer you hid up your jacksy. You might even use a nuke, should you happen to have one.

I just hope that the Ruskies nukes are in better order than their air force. Because they look good on paper. But in practice, if all those Migs and Sukhois were up to snuff and Russia had dominated the requisite airspace, this fight would have been over and done and dusted by now. In my expert armchair General opinion, of course.

Now it's a dirty war. By this point I wouldn't be surprised if this shit dragged on for another decade, bringing down not just Russia, but the 'West' as well in a war of attrition that both sides can ill afford to fight, and neither side can really win, but for a pyrrhic victory. Even if it doesn't go nucular, the fallout from this will be immense, should it drag on for too much longer. Slavs might have little brains, but they have long memories. And the vicious little vindictive bastards are only too happy to drag us all down with them as well.

This is massive. It's massive news. And when Sweden and Finland do finally go ahead with it in a few days time, then the ante will have been well and truly upped to epic proportions. The pot just keeps getting hotter...

Who will blink first?

Finland joins.
Russia screams and threatens.
Nothing happens.
NATO laughs.

Unless Putin is going to give Cuba nukes, he's bothering me with his empty threats.

What are your thoughts on this development? Was it inevitable given the trajectory of relations between Europe and Russia over the last decade? Will this be a benefit for NATO? And what of the long-term impacts on Russia as it is further removed from the European body politic?
It's an unsurprising development, but it wasn't inevitable until Russia invade Ukraine. Before that yeah Russia might prop up some rebellions or invade to snatch a small area of your country, but ultimately it was little more than border skirmishes. Nothing to worry about all that much as Russia stood to gain more from expanding its economic influence than in conquering land in most cases.
Trying to wholesale conquer a country as large as Ukraine and making a genuine war of conquest out of it when their blitz failed and Ukraine didn't collapse like a house of cards was a big "what the fuck" moment. Suddenly being part of a defensive alliance so you could get some actual troops as backup was a really good idea. With the suddenly increases belligerence out of Russia, Finland has no guarantee that Russia won't take another go at conquering them. They might doubt Russia will try it given the amount of trouble invading Ukraine has caused them, but the thought of what Russia's plans might be had it's attempt to take over Ukraine been a resounding success is something that Finland can't help but imagine. Attempting to stay neutral while sharing a border with Russia would basically be gambling that Putin didn't see it as a "make me your bitch" sign.

Long term it just ensures that Russia will become increasingly isolated from Europe as long as Putin is in power. Plenty of people in Europe would still like to have good relations with Russia, but the whole "Putin is such an asshole that even countries that prefer neutrality felt they had to join a defensive alliance against him" thing will keep people from trying to mend fences, even after the current uproar dies down.

Does Sweden even have to join if Finland does?

Russia can't really do anything to major to Sweden, Yes! as Pervitin Perkele would stand in the way.

Same for Austria and Switzerland. They are effectively in a bubble.
